Incontinentia Pigmenti: A Series of Six Cases with Isolated Cutaneous Involvement.

Incontinentia pigmenti (IP) is a rare multi-system genetic disorder mostly affecting females. It presents primarily with cutaneous lesions but is often associated with dental, ocular, neurological, musculoskeletal, and cardiovascular abnormalities. We report a series of one male and five female infants with IP having isolated cutaneous involvement at the time of presentation. In such cases, timely diagnosis of the condition, followed by systemic evaluation and long-term periodic follow-up, is imperative to detect and treat more serious systemic manifestations at an early stage.

[Three-dimensional computerized tomography of diseases of the bones and joints].

Three-dimensional CT (3-DCT) surface reconstructions were generated in 157 patients with various disorders of the musculoskeletal system. Whereas generating the 3-D display of ligaments, tendons, intervertebral discs and nerve roots was difficult and time-consuming, the comprehension of complex abnormalities of bony structures was easier than with two-dimensional CT. 3-DCT was particularly useful in the preoperative planning of hip and spine surgeries while it also simplified the intraoperative orientation. 3-DCT proved to be a useful diagnostic method supplementing axial computed tomography.

Single-Center Overview of Pediatric Monogenic Autoinflammatory Diseases in the Past Decade: A Summary and Beyond.

Objective: Monogenic autoinflammatory diseases (AIDs) are inborn disorders caused by innate immunity dysregulation and characterized by robust autoinflammation. We aimed to present the phenotypes and genotypes of Chinese pediatric monogenic AID patients. Methods: A total of 288 pediatric patients clinically suspected to have monogenic AIDs at the Department of Pediatrics of Peking Union Medical College Hospital between November 2008 and May 2019 were genotyped by Sanger sequencing, and/or gene panel sequencing and/or whole exome sequencing. Final definite diagnoses were made when the phenotype

Radiological review of accident and emergency radiographs: a 1-year audit.

AIM: To assess the impact and cost effectiveness of a system of radiological review of accident and emergency (A&E) plain films. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Review documentation was studied retrospectively over a 1-year period. Six hundred and eighty-four actual or suspected errors in the initial radiological interpretation by A&E staff were highlighted by radiologists in training. These selected 'red reports' were then further reviewed by a musculoskeletal radiologist and a more senior member of the A&E team. RESULTS: Three hundred and fifty-one missed or strongly suspected fractures were detect

Compensation by nonoperated joints in the lower limbs during walking after endoprosthetic knee replacement following bone tumor resection.

BACKGROUND: Endoprosthetic knee replacement is often used to preserve joint function in patients with bone tumors of the distal femur or proximal tibia. Recently, because of improved oncologic outcome, surgeons are focusing more on the functional outcome of patients with musculoskeletal tumors. We hypothesized that patients who have undergone endoprosthetic knee replacement are forced to compensate for deficiency in their operated joint during walking. In this study, we investigated differences in gait kinematics, kinetics, and energetics between patients with endoprosthetic knee replacement a

Musculotendinous anomalies in musician and nonmusician hands.

Musculoskeletal abnormalities of musicians' hands and upper extremities are well-recognized and potentially career-threatening problems. Of the many types of potentiality problematic musculoskeletal disorders that could be assessed, this study focused on joint instability and musculotendinous anomalies. For this study, the hands of 92 music students were compared with the hands of 64 nonmusician control subjects. Flexor anomalies were observed much more frequently than extensor musculotendinous anomalies; clinical evidence of the Linburg-Comstock anomaly was noted for 60 to 70 percent of subje…

Analysis of abnormal posture in patients with Parkinson's disease using a computational model considering muscle tones.

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) exhibit distinct abnormal postures, including neck-down, stooped postures, and Pisa syndrome, collectively termed "abnormal posture" henceforth. In the previous study, when assuming an upright stance, patients with PD exhibit heightened instability in contrast to healthy individuals with disturbance, implying that abnormal postures serve as compensatory mechanisms to mitigate sway during static standing. However, limited studies have explored the relationship between abnormal posture and sway in the context of static standing. Increased muscle tone (i.e.,

Review and update of mutations causing Waardenburg syndrome.

Waardenburg syndrome (WS) is characterized by the association of pigmentation abnormalities, including depigmented patches of the skin and hair, vivid blue eyes or heterochromia irides, and sensorineural hearing loss. However, other features such as dystopia canthorum, musculoskeletal abnormalities of the limbs, Hirschsprung disease, or neurological defects are found in subsets of patients and used for the clinical classification of WS. Six genes are involved in this syndrome: PAX3 (encoding the paired box 3 transcription factor), MITF (microphthalmia-associated transcription factor), EDN3 (en…

Prune-belly syndrome associated with extra-abdominal abnormalities in a 7-year-old boy.

Prune-belly syndrome (PBS) is an association of abdominal wall deficiency, genitourinary anomalies, and in males, cryptorchidism. Other congenital anomalies are associated with PBS, particularly musculoskeletal deformities and gastrointestinal tract anomalies. In this report, a seven-year-old boy with PBS had mega cisterna magna variant, microcornea, aortic stenosis with bicuspid aortic valves, cholelithiasis, and Hirschsprung's disease. Coexistence of these abnormalities with PBS supports the concept of PBS being caused by an early disturbance of not only mesodermal development but also of th

Diastematomyelia in adults. A review.

A consecutive series of 45 cases of diastematomyelia in adults is analyzed. The majority of patients were females with a 3.4:1 female to male ratio. The ages ranged from 19 to 76 with a mean of 37.8 years. The lesion was usually located in the lumbar region. In 17 patients the development of symptoms was associated with specific incidents or events, usually trauma. Twelve patients had pre-existing static musculoskeletal or neurologic abnormalities and 20 had cutaneous spinal lesions suggesting dysphraphism. The symptoms and signs included pain and a variety of sensorimotor and/or sphincteric a

Valvular disease associated with systemic illness.

The connective tissue diseases are immune-mediated inflammatory diseases that manifest predominantly with symptoms and signs of musculoskeletal and mucocutaneous inflammation. They frequently affect the heart valves, pericardium, and myocardium. In patients with AKS, the aortic root and conduction system are also frequently involved. Echocardiographic series in these patients have demonstrated that valvular disease is highly prevalent and associated with substantial morbidity and mortality (Table 1). The prevalence rates of clinically detected valvular disease, however, are either unknown or l

[Musculoskeletal examination: from neonates to adolescents].

A large number of medical consultations are related to musculoskeletal abnormalities. Less than 10 percent of patients are referred for surgery. In most cases, history taking and a mere clinical examination are sufficient to establish a diagnosis. Useful additional tests are usually limited to standard anteroposterior and lateral x-rays and laboratory analysis when an infection- or inflammation-induced abnormality is suspected. Any physician likely to deal with children should be able to conduct this clinical examination and include some of its elements given its essential role in screening (s…

[Late onset Friedreich ataxia: clinical description of a family in Argentina].

Friedreich Ataxia (FA) is the most common hereditary ataxia, caused by abnormal expansion of the GAA triplet of the first intron of the X25 gene on chromosome 9. Clinically it occurs in patients under the age of 25 and it is frequently associated with musculoskeletal, endocrine and myocardial disorders. Among their phenotypic variants there are patients starting their symptoms after the age of 25. The latter group is defined as late onset Freidreich ataxia (LOFA). The objective of this work is to present three siblings affected by late onset Friedreich ataxia. Their symptoms began between the

Multiple muscular abnormalities in a fetal cadaver with CHARGE syndrome.

The CHARGE syndrome characterized by coloboma, heart defects, atresia of the choanae, retarded growth, genitourinary hypoplasia, and ear anomalies is one of the rare syndromes. Although certain clinical issues (scapular winging, sloping shoulder, Sprengel's deformity, kyphosis and scoliosis) which could be related to abnormalities in musculoskeletal structures of the neck and shoulder have been identified in CHARGE syndrome, data on details of muscle anomalies seem to be quite limited in the literature. In this case report, bilateral multiple muscular abnormalities (agenesis of the trapezius,
