Extrapulmonary Sarcoidosis: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Extrapulmonary sarcoidosis accounts for only two percent of the total sarcoid cases. Sarcoidosis affecting the musculoskeletal system alone is even rarer. Diagnosis is based on suggestive history, clinical features, imaging followed by confirmation of non-caseating granulomas on a biopsy. Steroids form the first line of treatment for patients where musculoskeletal system is involved. We report the case of a 26-year-old gentleman who presented with right foot pain and unintentional weight loss. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of feet confirmed bilateral stress fractures of both feet. Af…

Sickness absence due to musculoskeletal diagnoses and risk of diagnosis-specific disability pension: a nationwide Swedish prospective cohort study.

Musculoskeletal disorders constitute major public health problems. Few studies have, however, examined risk of disability pension among persons sickness absent due to musculoskeletal diagnoses. Thus, we constructed a prospective nationwide population-based cohort study based on Swedish registers, consisting of all 4,687,756 individuals living in Sweden December 31, 2004/2005, aged 20-64 years, who were not on disability or old-age pension. Those individuals who were sickness absent in 2005 due to musculoskeletal diagnoses were compared to those sickness absent due to non-musculoskeletal diagno

Mussel-Based Biomimetic Strategies in Musculoskeletal Disorder Treatment: From Synthesis Principles to Diverse Applications.

Musculoskeletal disorders are the second leading cause of disability worldwide, posing a huge global burden to the public sanitation system. Currently, tissue engineering-based approaches act as effective strategies, which are, however, challenging in limited application scenarios. Mussel-based biomimetic materials, exhibit numerous unique properties such as intense adhesion, biocompatibility, moisture resistance, and injectability, to name only a few, and have attracted extensive research interest. In particular, featuring state-of-the-art properties, mussel-inspired biomaterials have been wi

Systemic sclerosis. A clinical overview.

Systemic Sclerosis (SSc) is a multisystem disease that affects the skin and internal organs (i.e., gastrointestinal tract, lung, heart, kidney and peripheral nervous system). In the early phase, lung involvement is characterized by interstitial inflammatory alterations that are detected by bronchoalveolar lavage analysis and high resolution computed tomography (ground glass). As the disease progresses, fibrotic changes become evident and the diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO) is impaired. Cardiac involvement in SSc can be manifested as myocardial disease, pericardial disease, conduc

Risk assessment for prolonged sickness absence due to musculoskeletal disorders: protocol for a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders are the leading cause of sickness absence and disability pension in Norway. There is strong evidence that long-term sickness absence due to musculoskeletal disorders are associated with a reduced probability of return to work (RTW). A way to meet the economic and resource-demanding challenges related to individual follow-up of this group is to identify and treat those individuals with a high risk of prolonged sickness. The overall purposes of this project are 1) to determine the most accurate screening tool to identify people at a high risk of prolonged si

Pushing and pulling in relation to musculoskeletal disorders: a review of risk factors.

The objective was to review the literature on risk factors for musculoskeletal disorders related to pushing and pulling. The risk factors have been described and evaluated from four perspectives: epidemiology, psychophysics, physiology, and biomechanics. Epidemiological studies have shown, based on cross-sectional data, that pushing and pulling is associated with low back pain. Evidence with respect to complaints of other parts of the musculoskeletal system is lacking. Risk factors have been found to influence the maximum (acceptable) push or pull forces as well as the physiological and mechan…

Quantifying exposure in occupational manual tasks with cumulative trauma disorder potential.

A method of describing the musculoskeletal loads in the hand and wrist during manual tasks is presented. A profile of twelve factors is used to quantify the exposure of applicable soft tissues to modes of loading suggested as being related to a number of chronic, work-related musculoskeletal disorders such as chronic muscle strain, tenosynovitis, and carpal tunnel syndrome. These factors include estimates of tendon loads and movement, frictional work done on the tendon sheaths, and muscle activation determined using electromyography. The response of these measures to changes of force, repetiti

Which Approach to Choose to Counteract Musculoskeletal Aging? A Comprehensive Review on the Multiple Effects of Exercise.

Aging is a complex physiological process that profoundly affects the functionality of the musculoskeletal system, contributing to an increase in the incidence of diseases such as osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and sarcopenia. Cellular senescence plays a crucial role in these degenerative processes, promoting chronic inflammation and tissue dysfunction through the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). Recently, senotherapeutics have shown promising results in improving musculoskeletal health. Natural compounds such as resveratrol, rapamycin, quercetin, curcumin, vitamin E, genistein,…

Musculoskeletal concerns do not justify failure to use safer sequential trigger to prevent acute nail gun injuries.

BACKGROUND: Acute nail gun injuries can be controlled significantly by using tools with sequential triggers and training. Concern has been raised that sequential triggers, which require that the nose piece of the gun be depressed prior to pulling the trigger, could increase risk of musculoskeletal problems. METHODS: We conducted active injury surveillance among union carpenter apprentices to monitor acute injuries and musculoskeletal disorders between 2010 and 2013. RESULTS: Acute injury risk was 70% higher with contact trip rather than sequential triggers. Musculoskeletal risk was comparabl
