Myiasis is an uncommon parasitic infestation caused by Diptera larvae that can affect both humans and animals and spread to various body areas. The rarest form of the disease, oral myiasis, is occasionally found in impoverished third-world nations due to poor sanitation facilities and poor hygiene. Having a thorough understanding of this uncommon illness helps with early detection, which reduces morbidity and death. Hereby, we present a case report of a 17-year-old male patient with poor socioeconomic status and neurological impairment who developed oral myiasis because of poor oral hygiene wh…

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous myiasis is an ectoparasitic disease caused by fly larvae. In non-endemic regions it is rare, often unfamiliar to clinicians and readily misdiagnosed.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old Serbian traveller developed painful furuncular lesions on the thigh after returning from Kenya. The lesions were initially treated as insect bites with intramuscular corticosteroid, antihistamines and topical betamethasone-gentamicin. Spontaneous expulsion of a larva led to the recognition of myiasis.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Three third-instar (L3) larvae were surgically removed. Morphological…

Previously, the Marsh greenbottle blowfly, Lucilia silvarum Meigen (Diptera: Calliphoridae), has been implicated in myiasis of anurans but not of mammals or birds. This report describes an incident of opportunistic myiasis of nestling common blackbirds, Turdus merula (Passeriformes: Turdidae), by L. silvarum larvae in association with an infestation by the hematophagous maggot Neottiophilum praeustum (Diptera: Piophilidae).

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous myiasis is frequently observed; however, eosinophilic pleural effusion induced by this condition is rare.
CASE SUMMARY: We report the case of a 65-year-old female Tibetan patient from Qinghai Province, who presented to West China Hospital of Sichuan University around mid-November 2011 with a chief complaint of recurrent cough, occasional hemoptysis, and right chest pain. There was no past medical and surgical history of note, except for occasional dietary habit of eating raw meat. Clinical examination revealed a left lung collapse and diminished breathing sounds in her l…

A 42 year old patient was referred to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the Federal University of Uberlândia, for treatment of mandibular fractures (condyles and symphysis), a victim of a run over. The symphysis was surgically approached, using as surgical access the pre-existing laceration in the submental region. Five days after discharge, the patient returned with dehiscence of the wound and physical examination showed infestation by larvae in the symphysis. Mechanical removal and debridement were performed under local anesthesia, where plate exposure was noted. The patien

Special care in dentistry : official publication of the American Association of Hospital Dentists, the Academy of Dentistry for the Handicapped, and the American Society for Geriatric Dentistry2018eng
AIMS: Myiasis is a disease caused by the invasion of tissues by larvae of flies. The aim of this study was to carry out a review of reported cases of oral and maxillofacial myiasis in older adults and to show a case report of oral myiasis in a 95-year-old frail man with severe Alzheimer's disease from Brazil.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Between 1988 and 2017, 35 oral and maxillofacial myiasis cases were reported in older adults in English-language studies from PubMed and Lilacs databases.
CONCLUSIONS: Oral and maxillofacial myiasis in older adults showed low incidence and good prognosis of cure, wh…

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to examine the molecular characterization of moth flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) based on their mitochondrial DNA sequences and determine the vectorial potential and damage caused by moth flies in future researches.
METHODS: A total of 240 adult moth flies were collected from toilet, bathroom, and basement walls of houses from different locations of the Kayseri region between May 2016 and April 2017. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analyses were performed using primer pairs, specificaly targeting the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase c subunit I (mt-COI) g

BACKGROUND: Myiasis is the infestation of live tissue of humans and other vertebrates by larvae of flies. Worldwide, myiasis of humans is seldom reported, although the trend is gradually changing in some countries. Reports of human myiasis in Africa are few. Several cases of myiasis were recently seen at the Mthatha Hospital Complex, Mthatha, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa (SA).
OBJECTIVE: Because of a paucity of literature on myiasis from this region, surgeons and scientists from Walter Sisulu University, Mthatha, decided to document myiasis cases presenting either at Nelson Mandela Aca…

Ophthalmomyiasis can have variable presentation depending on the type of fly, structures involved, and level of penetration. A 42-year-old female presented with extensive myiasis of the right eye. A lesion of 3×2 cm was noted at the medial canthus and was infested with maggots. The larvae were removed meticulously and the wound debrided. The larva isolated was that of Chrysomya bezziana (Old World screwworm). Computed tomography (CT) scan was normal. The wound was dressed regularly and healed by secondary intention. Ocular myiasis is a rare disease that can lead to life threatening consequence…

In literal terms myiasis is the invasion of the tissues and organs of human beings by fly larvae. This phenomenon is well documented in the skin, especially among animals and people in developed and developing countries. When the tissues of oral cavity are invaded by the parasitic larvae of flies, the condition is called as oral myiasis. With the paper we are presenting a case of 19-year-old female suffering from oral myiasis of upper lip and palate. The treatment consisted of manual removal of the larvae, surgical debridement of the wound and oral therapy with doxycycline used as a locally ac…

Furuncular myiasis caused by Cordylobia anthropophaga larvae is commonly seen in Africa but rarely is diagnosed in travelers returning from the sub-Saharan region. We report 2 cases of furuncular myiasis due to Cordylobia species in adolescent American travelers returning from Senegal.

Cordylobia sp. is a fly belonging to the Calliphoridae family. Three species of Cordylobia are known: C. anthropophaga, C. rodhaini and C. ruandae. The C. rodhaini Gedoelst 1909 lives in Sub-Saharan Africa, especially in rain forest areas. Usual hosts are rodents and antelopes. Humans are accidentally infested. Myiasis caused by C. rodhaini has been very rarely reported in the literature. We present three cases of C. rodhaini myiasis acquired in Ethiopia and Uganda.

BACKGROUND: For centuries, immature stages of Dipterans have infested humans and animals, resulting in a pathological condition referred to as myiasis. Myiases are globally distributed but they remain neglected diseases in spite of the great medical and veterinary importance. Moreover, there is a paucity of information on the clinical-pathology and/or epidemiology of the infestation, especially in African free ranging wildlife.
FINDINGS: In the present study we report for the first time an outbreak of traumatic cutaneous myiasis (caused by Old World screwworm, Chrysomyia bezziana and blowfly,…
