Limb-Sparing Surgery and Stifle Arthrodesis Using Patient-Specific 3D-Printed Guides and Endoprosthesis for Distal Femoral Chondrosarcoma in a Dog: A Case Report.

Limb-sparing techniques for appendicular primary bone tumors are still associated with a high rate of complications. Three-dimensional (3D)-printed patient-specific instruments could reduce these complications. The aim of this study is to describe a limb-sparing surgery using 3D-printed patient-specific guides (PSGs) and an endoprosthesis (PSE) to treat femoral chondrosarcoma in a dog. An eight-year-old female Golden Retriever presented with persistent lameness of the right hind limb, reluctance to move and difficulty in maintaining a standing position. Palpation of the right femur revealed an

A Rare Entity of the Anterior Chest Cage Rib Chondrosarcoma: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Primary bone cancers, also called bone sarcomas, can arise anywhere in the body. Less than 1% of cancers are identified as primary bone cancers annually, and they are correlated with high rates of morbidity and death. Twenty to twenty-seven percent of primary malignant osseous neoplasms are chondrosarcomas, the rarest subtype of bone sarcomas. The incidence of chondrosarcomas in Saudi Arabia was less common than globally discovered chondrosarcomas, and only a few cases have been recorded. The most common presentation of the primary chondrosarcoma (CS) is to encompass the bony skeleton of the l

A low grade osteosarcoma of the colon.

BACKGROUND: Soft-tissue osteosarcomas are very rare. Only three cases of extraskeletal osteosarcoma have been reported arising in colon and we report the first well differentiated one. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 58-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with a history of pain and swelling in lower right abdomen for the last 3 months. Routine laboratory tests and tumor markers (CEA, CA19-9, AFP) were all normal, as well as colonoscopy. CT-scan revealed large partly calcificated mass connected to the ascending colon without significant imbibition of contrast. Because of the size of the tumor,

Evacuation of axillary hematoma causing brachial plexus compression in newly diagnosed leukemia: a case report and literature review.

Spontaneous soft tissue hematomas are recognized complications of myeloproliferative neoplasms but rarely implicate the brachial plexus. A large axillary hematoma could represent a surgical emergency due to compression of local neurovascular structures. We report a case of a 63-year-old male with a history of polycythemia vera who presented with an expansive axillary hematoma compressing his brachial plexus. The lesion's profound size caused upper limb paralysis and exquisite pain on passive movment, raised suspicion for malignant hematologic progression, and provided a localized etiology for

Radiation treatment of benign mesenchymal disease.

The benign mesenchymal diseases, for which radiation is often quite effective in halting progression or achieving complete and permanent resolution, include neoplastic and nonneoplastic processes (eg, giant cell tumor of bone to keloid). Radiation oncologists have been reluctant to employ radiation in the management of patients with benign disease for several reasons: (1) the small but nonzero risk of late appearance of radiation-induced malignant tumors; (2) were radiation subsequently required to be employed in the same region of the body for treatment of a separate and independent neoplasm,

[The role of AKT inhibitors combined with Ruxolitinib in ameliorating myeloproliferative disorders in mice with CALR gene mutations].

Objective: To investigate the combined therapeutic role of the AKT inhibitor MK2206 and Ruxolitinib in treating Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPN) driven by a calreticulin (CALR) gene mutation. Methods: ① Murine bone marrow c-kit(+) cells were isolated by sacrificing mice and harvesting bone marrow from the femur, tibia, and ilium for subsequent c-kit(+) cell sorting. ② A CALR transplantation mouse model was established. GFP-tagged retroviral vectors containing either the CALR gene mutation or the migR1 control were constructed, packaged in Platinum-E cells, and used to transduce murine bone m

Radiological and multidisciplinary management of extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma: A case report.

Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma (EMC), a very rare subtype of soft tissue sarcoma (STS), distinguished by its histopathological profile, has unique clinical prognosis of potential for late local recurrences and distant metastases due to its molecular alterations. The infrequent occurrence of EMC, coupled with its radiological characteristics that often overlap with those of other myxoid-rich neoplasms, may impose considerable diagnostic difficulties for clinicians. A 43-year-old male who presented with a progressively enlarging mass in the distal right thigh and knee region since six-month

Modeling Primary Bone Tumors and Bone Metastasis with Solid Tumor Graft Implantation into Bone.

Primary bone tumors or bone metastasis from solid tumors result in painful osteolytic, osteoblastic, or mixed osteolytic/osteoblastic lesions. These lesions compromise bone structure, increase the risk of pathologic fracture, and leave patients with limited treatment options. Primary bone tumors metastasize to distant organs, with some types capable of spreading to other skeletal sites. However, recent evidence suggests that with many solid tumors, cancer cells that have spread to bone may be the primary source of cells that ultimately metastasize to other organ systems. Most syngeneic or xeno

Noninflammatory entities and the differential diagnosis of positive three phase bone imaging.

The greater sensitivity of skeletal imaging over radiography (93% vs. 50%) for the detection of early osteomyelitis is well known. The introduction of the three phase protocol has improved the specificity of skeletal imaging by eliminating various noninfectious entities; however, the occurrence of false-positive studies is not unusual. Four such cases have been observed by the authors in a group of 34 patients suspected of having osteomyelitis and who had positive three phase skeletal imaging. These includes a patient with giant cell tumor, synovial cell sarcoma, gouty arthritis, and Reiter's

Buschke-Ollendorff syndrome: three generations in a Japanese family.

Buschke-Ollendorff syndrome is an autosomal dominant disease characterized by disseminated connective tissue nevi of elastic type and osteopoikilosis. We report a 6-year-old Japanese boy with connective tissue nevi that showed slightly grouped yellowish or skin-colored papules and nodules, distributed from birth over his right thigh, right buttock, and back. Radiologic skeletal survey revealed osteopoikilosis. A skin biopsy specimen obtained from a papule showed that collagen bundles in the dermis were thickened and homogenized. The elastic fibers were not increased but were coarse and clumped

Evolution of urticaria pigmentosa into indolent systemic mastocytosis: abnormal immunophenotype of mast cells without evidence of c-kit mutation ASP-816-VAL.

Mastocytosis comprises a heterogeneous group of hematological disorders which are morphologically defined by proliferation and accumulation of tissue mast cells in one or more organs. Clinical manifestations of mastocytosis range from disseminated maculopapular skin lesions (= urticaria pigmentosa [UP]) that may spontaneously regress to highly aggressive neoplasms like mast cell leukemia or mast cell sarcoma. Recently, it could be shown that systemic mastocytosis (SM) is a clonal disorder often exhibiting mutations of c-kit, a protooncogene encoding the tyrosine kinase receptor for stem cell f

Pediatric fine-needle aspiration biopsy.

A total of 135 fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies from varying sites were performed in 123 children (mean, 10.5 years; range, one day to 18 years) over a five-year period. One hundred thirty (96.3%) biopsy specimens were satisfactory for evaluation. Seventy-nine cases were nonneoplastic (60.8%); among these cases, a specific diagnosis of infectious disease was made in 17 (13.1%). A diagnosis of neoplastic disease was made in 50 (38.5%) cases, of which 14 (10.8%) were benign, 28 (21.5%) were malignant, and 8 (6.2%) were neoplasms of uncertain biologic potential. A Case of Vascular Leiomyoma Causing Osseous Malformations in the Foot.

A vascular leiomyoma is a vascular soft tissue tumor that is relatively rare and benign. They usually occur as solitary lesions and are well encapsulated. The present study describes a unique case of vascular leiomyoma causing erosions of a metatarsal secondary to compression from the tumor. We present a female in her fourth decade of life with osseous malformations of the third metatarsal that became painful after an acute trauma to the foot.

Cryopreservation and storage of human bone marrow: a survey of current practices.

As bone marrow transplantation is being used with increasing frequency, problems of storage space and cost, inventory control and disposal have arisen. Issues such as maximum storage time and acquisition of consent for marrow disposal need to be addressed before a large inventory is accumulated. Consideration should also be given to using non-infused marrows for research purposes. Eighty-three bone marrow transplant centers were surveyed in an attempt to establish a data base with regard to guidelines for storage of cryopreserved human bone marrow. Fifty-two centers (62.7%) responded to the qu

Childhood moyamoya disease accompanying Leigh syndrome.

Ewing sarcoma is an aggressive tumor of bone and soft tissue affecting predominantly children and young adults. Tumor-specific chromosomal translocations create EWS-FLI1 and similar aberrant ETS fusion proteins that drive sarcoma development in patients. ETS family fusion proteins and over-expressed ETS proteins are also found in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients. Transgenic expression of EWS-FLI1 in mice promotes high penetrance erythroid leukemia with dense hepatic and splenic infiltrations. We identified a small molecule, YK-4-279, that directly bi

Extensive ossifying fibroma of the mandible: segmental resection and free fibula flap reconstruction.

Ossifying fibroma is a benign fibro-osseous neoplasm predominantly affecting young females, characterized by replacement of normal bone with fibrous tissue containing mineralized material. While smaller lesions can be managed conservatively, extensive lesions require resection to minimize recurrence. We report a 27-year-old female presenting with a large ossifying fibroma involving the right mandibular ramus, angle, and body. Clinical examination revealed facial asymmetry with firm, non-tender swelling, and buccal cortical expansion. Computed tomography demonstrated a well-defined, expansile l

Role of Proton Beam Therapy in Spinal Chordomas: A Narrative Review of The Literature.

Chordomas are rare malignant neoplasms arising from vestigial remnants of the embryonic notochord. Approximately 55-70% of chordomas develop within the vertebral column. Their affinity to develop within the bones of the axial skeleton and propensity to locally invade and recur makes them challenging candidates for complete surgical excision. Adjuvant therapies are hence necessary to improve outcomes; for which chemotherapy has been observed to be largely ineffective, owing to the tumour being resistant to it. Radiotherapy is the current adjuvant therapy of choice for chordoma management. Over

Esophageal Plasmacytoma Revealed by Persistent Hiccups: A Case Report and Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma (SEP) is a rare neoplasm that is derived from monoclonal proliferation of plasma cells in the soft tissues or organs arising outside the bone marrow. It is present in about 3% of all plasma cell tumors and originates mainly from the upper respiratory tract and nasopharynx. Involvement of the esophagus is exceptionally seen in cases of SEP. Case Presentation. We report a novel case of a 74-year-old male patient attended with a 6-month history of hiccupping further associated with dysphasia and weight loss all caused by esophageal plasmacytoma.
