[Pulmonary complications in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Results of a prospective study].

Between 1983 and 1987, a stepwise diagnostic programme was undertaken prospectively in 37 of 100 HIV-positive patients with 40 bronchopulmonary infections. It consisted chiefly of flexible bronchoscopy combined with lavage, transbronchial biopsy and/or removal of bronchial brush cells. Taking into account all examinations performed in life and at autopsy, 25 of the 37 patients had Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (67.5%), 13 had bacterial pneumonia, six of these were mycobacterial infections (atypical mycobacteria in four), eight had neoplasms (pulmonary Kaposi's sarcoma in five, squamous-cell c

Eccrine Poroma: A Case Report.

Eccrine poroma is a benign adnexal neoplasm often mistaken for pyogenic granuloma, skin tag, squamous cell carcinoma, and other soft-tissue tumors. We describe a 69-year-old woman with a soft-tissue mass on the lateral aspect of her right hallux that was initially clinically diagnosed as a pyogenic granuloma. Histologic examination proved that this mass was instead an eccrine poroma, the rare benign sweat gland tumor. This case exemplifies the importance of a broad differential diagnosis, especially regarding soft-tissue masses of the lower extremity.

Mixed adenoneuroendocrine carcinoma (MANEC) of the gastroesophageal junction: a case report and review of the literature.

Esophageal cancer is the fourth most common neoplasm of the gastrointestinal tract. It is responsible for 1.7% of all deaths related with cancer. The two main types of esophageal cancer are squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. Other types of esophageal cancer are uncommon. We present a 57-year-old man admitted to the hospital with nausea and vomiting due to a high-grade malignant mixed adenoneuroendocrine carcinoma of the gastroesophageal junction. The patient underwent Ivor-Lewis esophagectomy and adyuvant chemoradiotherapy. At 8-month follow-up he was alive without evidence of recurre

Clear cell atypical fibroxanthoma: a case report and review of the literature.

Atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) is a group of cutaneous tumors characterized by a population of fusiform, epithelioid and pleomorphic cells. Clinically, AFX is commonly found on the head and neck of older adults as a solitary ulcerated nodule. Clear cell atypical fibroxanthoma is a very rare variant of AFX, with only 13 cases reported to date. The differential diagnoses often include dermal neoplasms composed of clear cells, such as squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, metastatic renal cell carcinoma and balloon cell malignant melanoma. These diagnoses can be ruled out by the typical im

Cervical cancer screening by cytology and the burden of epithelial abnormalities in low resource settings: a tertiary-center 42-year study.

BACKGROUND: Cytological screening remains a high-impact practice, particularly in low-resource settings, for preventing cervical cancer. The examination of screening practices over time and the prevalence of epithelial abnormalities have not been investigated in longitudinal studies in one of the largest countries in the Middle East and Africa. METHODS: Routine healthcare data, between March 1981 and December 2022, were extracted from the database of the Early Cancer Detection Unit in a tertiary referral university hospital in the Greater Cairo Region, Egypt. Cervical smears were obtained usi

Human Papillomavirus in Bowen Disease: Site-Specific Prevalence, Genotype Distribution, and Clinical Implications Across Nail Apparatus, Cutaneous, and Anogenital Sites.

Bowen disease (BD), or squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in situ, represents a histologically defined but biologically heterogeneous group of intraepithelial neoplasms arising across different epithelial compartments. Human papillomavirus (HPV) plays a well-established causal role in anogenital squamous intraepithelial neoplasia, whereas its contribution to extragenital BD, including nail apparatus and general cutaneous lesions, has remained controversial. We performed a narrative review of the literature to synthesize current evidence on HPV prevalence, genotype distribution, and pathogenetic rel

Lip cancer experience in Mexico. An 11-year retrospective study.

Lip cancer is the most frequent malignant neoplasm of the oral cavity; however, there is no information available on the incidence of this type of cancer in Mexico. This study provides information about the clinico-pathological features of lip cancer patients admitted at a cancer hospital in Mexico City during an 11-year period and describes the treatment modalities performed and their results. A total of 113 patients were studied. There were 74 men (65.5%) and 39 women (34.5%), ranging in age from 14 to 106 years (mean 70 years). In 53 cases (46.9%) an association was found between the diseas

Diagnostic accuracy of dermatoscopy for melanocytic and nonmelanocytic pigmented lesions.

BACKGROUND: It is unknown whether dermatoscopy improves the diagnostic accuracy for all types of pigmented skin lesions or only for those that are melanocytic. OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess if the addition of dermatoscopy to clinical examination with the unaided eye improves diagnostic accuracy for all types of pigmented lesions. METHODS: We analyzed 463 consecutively excised pigmented skin lesions collected during a period of 30 months in a primary care skin cancer practice in Queensland, Australia. RESULTS: Of 463 lesions, 217 (46.9%) were nonmelanocytic. Overall 30% (n = 138) were malig

Inter Arytenoid Granular Cell Tumor of Larynx-A Rare Case Report.

Granular cell tumors (GCTs) are uncommon neoplasms, often originating from Schwann cells, with granular cytoplasm being a hallmark feature. Laryngeal GCTs, comprising 3% to 10% of cases, present diagnostic challenges due to their resemblance to squamous cell carcinoma. We present a case of a 46-year-old male with throat pain, diagnosed with a laryngeal GCT. Histopathological examination and immunohistochemistry confirmed the diagnosis. Laryngeal GCTs typically manifest as small, firm submucosal nodules, posing challenges in differentiation from vocal fold polyps. Diagnosis relies on histologic

Anti-tumor mechanism of artesunate.

Artesunate (ART) is a classic antimalarial drug with high efficiency, low toxicity and tolerance. It has been shown to be safe and has good anti-tumor effect. Existing clinical studies have shown that the anti-tumor mechanisms of ART mainly include inducing apoptosis and autophagy of tumor cells, affecting tumor microenvironment, regulating immune response, overcoming drug resistance, as well as inhibiting tumor cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and angiogenesis. ART has been proven to fight against lung cancer, hepatocarcinoma, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, leukemia, colorectal cancer, o

[Radiation-induced skin injuries].

Early radiation dermatitis develops after large doses of X-radiation. Inflammatory erythema develops within about a week. This may heal with desquamation and pigmentation. If the dose was high enough, painful blisters may develop at the site of erythema. In that case, healing usually takes place with atrophy, teleangiectasia, and irregular hyperpigmentation. Subsequent to very large doses, ulceration occurs, generally within 2 months. Such an ulcer may heal ultimately with severe atrophic scarring. Chronic radiation dermatitis occurs from a few months to many years. The skin shows atrophy, tel

Nonsquamous cell malignant tumours of the oral cavity: an overview.

Many malignant tumours other than squamous cell carcinoma may present in the oral cavity. Melanomas of the oral cavity are usually pigmented, aggressive tumours associated with a poor prognosis. Neoplasms of the minor salivary glands have a greater tendency to be malignant than those of the major glands, and some exhibit a predilection for occurring in the mouth. Many types of connective tissue malignant tumours (sarcomas) may arise in the mouth, including soft-tissue cancers and lesions of hematologic cells such as lymphoma, whereas osteosarcoma is the most common malignancy of the hard tissu

Progress in cutaneous cancer research.

Cutaneous cancers represent a major public health concern due to the very high incidence, associated medical costs, substantial mortality, and cosmetic deformities associated with treatment. Considerable progress in basic research has provided new insights into the underlying genetic basis of the major human cutaneous cancers, malignant melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. In turn, these genetic insights have illuminated biochemical pathways that promise to provide new approaches to the prevention and treatment of cutaneous neoplasms. This review will detail the evolvin

Anal neoplasm in colonoscopy: What endoscopists need to know.

BACKGROUND: The question of whether a colonoscopist should evaluate anal diseases is relevant. Endoscopists need to be aware of the possibility of anal neoplasms during a colonoscopy, as they can be easily overlooked if not properly examined. Specifically, one must clarify the responsibility of the colonoscopist in the diagnosis of anal neoplasms. Anal cancer is relatively rare, accounting for less than 2% of all cases annually. Owing to its rarity, population screening for anal cancer is not indicated, and monitoring is limited to high-risk groups. However, the number of anal cancer cases in

Meta-analysis of the efficacy and safety of Xihuang Pills/capsules in adjuvant treatment of uterine cervical neoplasms.

BACKGROUND: Xihuang Pills/Capsules have a longstanding history of utilization in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for treating cancer. Nevertheless, a comprehensive investigation is required regarding the specific impacts and safety of Xihuang Pills/Capsules in individuals with uterine cervical neoplasms. Thus, conducting a meta-analysis is essential to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of combining Xihuang Pills/Capsules with Western medicine in patients with cervical neoplasms. METHODS: The research involved searching 5 English and 4 Chinese databases for randomized controlled trials (R

Early vulvar squamous neoplasia: advances in classification, diagnosis, and differential diagnosis.

The recognition and classification of preinvasive vulvar neoplasia are complicated by the facts that (a) their respective carcinomas have a diverse (human papillomavirus [HPV]- and non-HPV-related) pathogenesis; (b) not all vulvar squamous carcinomas are associated with precursors with strictly defined morphologic features; (c) many carcinomas have epithelial changes that are abnormal but lack sufficient nuclear atypia to warrant classification as an intraepithelial neoplasm; and (d) even lesions associated with a common etiologic agent (HPV) present a diverse morphologic spectrum. In this rev

Metastatic cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma accounts for nearly all squamous cell carcinomas of the parotid gland.

Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the parotid gland (pSCCP) has long been recognized as a separate entity and is included in the WHO classifications of salivary gland tumors. However, it is widely accepted among head and neck pathologists that pSCCP is exceptionally rare. Yet, there are many publications describing series of pSCCP and data from SEER and other cancer register databases indicate erroneously an increasing incidence of pSCCP. Importantly, pSCCP and metastatic (secondary) squamous cell carcinoma to the parotid gland (mSCCP) have nearly identical histological features, and the diag

The endodermal origin of digestive and respiratory tract APUD cells. Histopathologic evidence and a review of the literature.

Twenty-seven small cell carcinomas of the lung and three tumors of the large intestine with combined adenocarcinomatous and small cell and/or anaplastic carcinoid-type histologic features were studied by light and electron microscopy. It was shown that the small cells have morphologic characteristics of APUD cells. Also presented are the histologic features of a carcinoma of the lung with large cell undifferentiated carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and giant cell carcinoma areas in the primary site and in several metastatic foci. Two of the renal metastases showed small cell

[Non-melanoma skin cancer : Pathogenesis, prevalence and prevention].

Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is the most common malignancy of the light-skinned population with an enormous socioeconomic impact. Historically known as incurable under the term noli me tangere (transl. do not touch me), today various non-melanocytic cutaneous neoplasms are grouped as NMSC. The most common of these, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and actinic keratoses as carcinomas in situ, are increasingly called keratinocyte carcinoma. Today, the pathogenesis and risk factors of NMSC are relatively well understood, which has led to multiple treatment options, the recognition

High grade neuroendocrine neoplasm of the antrum and orbit.

Neuroendocrine malignancies-tumors characterized by the production of dense-core secretory granules-are most often encountered in the lungs and can also be found in extrapulmonary sites. Our patient had a primary neuroendocrine tumor of the antrum with an elusive cell of origin that secondarily invaded the inferior orbit. In the sinuses, neuroendocrine tumors may be confused with infectious sinusitis or squamous cell carcinoma. There are no known pathognomonic clinical or radiographic signs to distinguish these tumors from other conditions. Diagnosis depends on a biopsy with histopathologic an
