Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by accelerated destruction of platelets due to the presence of platelet (Plt) auto antibodies and impaired production of platelets. Splenectomy is still the standard salvage therapy in cases refractory to corticosteroid therapy. Retrospectively we analyzed 34 patients with ITP that underwent splenectomy in the period May 2010 to March 2012 and have been followed for at least 12 months. A retrospective study on urinary bladder stones among the patients seeking treatment in Okhaldunga Hospital was carried out for six calendar years from 1988 to 1994. Forty-six cases of bladder stones were identified during that period. Among them, 43 patients' records were studied (93.0%) in subsequent analysis. Ninety-seven percent were male with mean age 11.53+/-6.9 years. The number of children are significantly higher in 0-9 years of age (p<0.01). PURPOSE: To study the causes of moderate and severe visual impairment (VI) and blindness and its changing trends in Nepalese children.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted. Participants, aged 7 to 17 years were recruited from integrated schools for the blind and the outpatient department of a tertiary eye hospital in Kathmandu. VI and blindness were categorized according to World Health Organization (WHO) categories and its protocol for eye examination of children with blindness and VI was followed.
