Optimization of Operation Parameters for Helical Flow Cleanout with Supercritical CO2 in Horizontal Wells Using Back-Propagation Artificial Neural Network.

Sand production and blockage are common during the drilling and production of horizontal oil and gas wells as a result of formation breakdown. The use of high-pressure rotating jets and annular helical flow is an effective way to enhance horizontal wellbore cleanout. In this paper, we propose the idea of using supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) as washing fluid in water-sensitive formation. SC-CO2 is manifested to be effective in preventing formation damage and enhancing production rate as drilling fluid, which justifies tis potential in wellbore cleanout. In order to investigate the effectiveness of

Doing without schema hierarchies: a recurrent connectionist approach to normal and impaired routine sequential action.

In everyday tasks, selecting actions in the proper sequence requires a continuously updated representation of temporal context. Previous models have addressed this problem by positing a hierarchy of processing units, mirroring the roughly hierarchical structure of naturalistic tasks themselves. The present study considers an alternative framework, in which the representation of context depends on recurrent connections within a network mapping from environmental inputs to actions. The ability of this approach to account for human performance was evaluated by applying it, through simulation, to

Neural classification of lung sounds using wavelet coefficients.

Electronic auscultation is an efficient technique to evaluate the condition of respiratory system using lung sounds. As lung sound signals are non-stationary, the conventional method of frequency analysis is not highly successful in diagnostic classification. This paper deals with a novel method of analysis of lung sound signals using wavelet transform, and classification using artificial neural network (ANN). Lung sound signals were decomposed into the frequency subbands using wavelet transform and a set of statistical features was extracted from the subbands to represent the distribution of

A 19-layer convolutional neural network for accurate COVID-19 detection in chest X-ray images: comparative analysis with pretrained networks.

One of the most conspicuous developments in the unprecedented worldwide epidemic of COVID-19 is the pressing demand for reliable diagnostic tools. Utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and image processing algorithms, this work proposes a novel 19-layer Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for accurate COVID-19 detection from chest X-ray images. This CNN architecture supports structure with single/multiple labels for three classes (i.e., for classification between layers like viral pneumonia, normal, and COVID-19) and four classes (i.e., lung opacity, normal, COVID-19, and pneumonia). Across th

An EEG-Based Edge-AI Framework for Alzheimer's and Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Classification.

Electroencephalography (EEG) has emerged as a promising non-invasive tool for the diagnosis of neurodegenerative disorders, and artificial intelligence (AI) has shown significant potential in this domain, as demonstrated by recent studies. However, strong inter-subject variability remains a major challenge, limiting the ability of AI-based models to learn disease-specific features that generalize across individuals, thereby hindering the development of clinically deployable subject-independent systems. In this work, we propose a cross-subject, AI-based EEG classification framework to distingui

Impact of Magnification, Image Type, and Number on Convolutional Neural Network Performance in Differentiating Canine Large Cell Lymphoma From Non-Lymphoma via Lymph Node Cytology.

BACKGROUND: Lymph node (LN) aspirates are often obtained to distinguish large-cell lymphoma (LCL) from non-lymphoma (NL) in dogs with enlarged lymph nodes. OBJECTIVE: Images from cytology slides tested the effects of magnification, image type, and number on a convolutional neural network (CNN) differentiating canine LCL from NL. METHODS: Three hundred images of LCL and NL were used to train a CNN and interrogate the effects of image magnification, type, and number on the model's performance. Identified cases were imaged at 200×, 500×, and 1000× magnification in color and gray-scale and then

Automated Classification of Body MRI Sequences Using Convolutional Neural Networks.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Multi-parametric MRI (mpMRI) studies of the body are routinely acquired in clinical practice. However, a standardized naming convention for MRI protocols and series does not exist currently. Conflicts in the series descriptions present in the DICOM headers arise due to myriad MRI scanners from various manufacturers used for imaging, wide variations in imaging practices across institutions, and technologist preferences. These conflicts affect the hanging protocol, which dictates the arrangement of sequences for the reading radiologist. At present, clinician supervision

Mathematics Meets Science in the Brain.

Mathematics and science are highly integrated disciplines, but the brain association between mathematics and science remains unclear. The current study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans of 34 undergraduates (17 males, mean age = 20.3±1.64 years old) while they completed mathematical, physical and chemical principles, arithmetic computation, and sentence comprehension. We examined neural activation level, neural activation pattern, and neural connectivity to investigate the neural associations between mathematics and science (including physics and chemistry). The results s

Multi-stage generative adversarial network model for segmenting retinal vascular structures in eye disease prediction.

Retinal vessel segmentation is essential for precise ophthalmological diagnoses, particularly in the prediction of retinal degenerative diseases. However, existing methods usually lack robustness and accuracy, especially in segmentation of thin or overlapping vessels. To face these challenges, this study introduces an enhanced retina-RV-Gain segmentation model, which employs an architecture of various stages to refine the results of segmentation iteratively. The model integrates attention mechanisms to better capture complex vessel structures and employs an adaptive loss function to manage cla

Decreased spinal inhibition leads to undiversified locomotor patterns.

During walking and running, animals display rich and coordinated motor patterns that are generated and controlled within the central nervous system. Previous computational and experimental results suggest that the balance between excitation and inhibition in neural circuits may be critical for generating such structured motor patterns. In this paper, we explore the influence of this balance on the ability of a reservoir computing artificial neural network to learn human locomotor patterns, using mean-field theory and simulations. We created networks with varying neuron numbers, connection perc

Automated diagnosis of heart disease in patients with heart murmurs: application of a neural network technique.

This study was conducted to test a three-layered artificial neural network analysis of phonocardiogram recordings to diagnose, automatically and objectively, the condition of the heart in patients with heart murmurs. The data were recorded simultaneously in each of 49 patients with a heart murmur through eight microphones attached to the skin surface with adhesive tape, and were analysed by computer. The diagnosis was automated using a three-layered neural network technique. The neural network generated correct answers in over 70% of cases. Furthermore, about 80% of cases of two concurrent dis

Deep-Motion-Net: GNN-based volumetric liver shape reconstruction from single-view 2D projections.

PURPOSE: Internal anatomical motion challenges precise radiation delivery during external beam radiotherapy. Estimating and compensating for anatomical motion are essential for improving planned dose delivery to target volumes while sparing organs-at-risk. This research achieves accurate motion prediction using only planar X-ray imaging from conventional linear accelerators, without surrogate signals or invasive fiducial markers. METHODS: We propose Deep-Motion-Net: a patient-specific end-to-end graph neural network (GNN) enabling 3D volumetric organ reconstruction from single in-treatment kV

Towards contrast- and pathology-agnostic clinical fetal brain MRI segmentation using SynthSeg.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has played a crucial role in fetal neurodevelopmental research. Structural annotations of MR images are an important step for quantitative analysis of the developing human brain, with Deep Learning providing an automated alternative for this otherwise tedious manual process. However, segmentation performances of Convolutional Neural Networks often suffer from domain shift, where the network fails when applied to subjects that deviate from the distribution with which it is trained on. In this work, we aim to train networks capable of automatically segmenting fet

Recognition of Gait Phases from Time-Domain Descriptors of Surface EMG Signals and Dynamic Convolutional Neural Networks.

Recent technological advancements facilitate the integration of surface electromyogram (sEMG) signals into control strategies for lower limb prostheses. Particularly, the sEMG signals are used to recognize the motion intent and it is challenging due to the inherent stochastic and nonstationary behavior of the signals. In the present study, a novel approach is proposed for multiclass gait phase classification using a dynamic convolutional neural network (DCNN) of time domain measures of sEMG from hamstrings and quadriceps. For this purpose, sEMG and inertial measurement unit (IMU) data are simu

Artificial Intelligence and Convolutional Neural Networks-Driven Detection of Micro and Macro Metastasis of Cutaneous Melanoma to the Lymph Nodes.

BACKGROUND: Lymph node (LN) assessment is a critical component in the staging and management of cutaneous melanoma. Traditional histopathological evaluation, supported by immunohistochemical staining, is the gold standard for detecting LN metastases. However, the process is labor-intensive, requiring the analysis of multiple tissue levels, which increases both time and cost. With the growing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into clinical workflows, there is potential to streamline this process, enhancing efficiency and accuracy. METHOD: This study analyzed 53 WSIs (12 negative samp
