Site-dependent central effects of aldosterone in rats.

A relationship between the subcommissural organ (SCO) and the adrenal glands has long been suspected. This report provides further information about the effects of a continuous D-aldosterone infusion into the SCO area of conscious, adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. A 6-day aldosterone infusion (5 ng/h) increased urinary sodium excretion, decreased adrenal medullary cross-sectional area, elevated adrenal corticosterone content and terminal plasma epinephrine concentration. Mineralocorticoid infusions directly into a lateral cerebral ventricle did not affect these parameters but, unlike SCO area i

Electron microscopy and immunostaining of the normal breast and its benign lesions. A search for neuroendocrine cells.

Specimens from 7 patients with normal breast tissue 26 patients with benign breast lesions (6 fibroadenomas, and 4 intraductal papillomas, 2 mammae lactantes, 10 cases of cystic disease and 4 fibrotic lesions) were studied by immunocytochemistry and electron microscopy. Excretory epithelial cells in 2 of the 4 papillomas were immunostained for NSE. Myoepithelial cells were frequently stained as well. All the breast specimens were nonreactive to the antichromogranin antibody we used. The 2 NSE positive intraductal papillomas were tested for presence of hormone immunoreactivity, but no positivel

The effects of transverse cuts caudal to the preoptic recess on the fine structure of paraventricular nuclei in rats.

Lesions of the tissue surrounding the preoptic recess (anteroventral third ventricle (AV3V) region) have been shown to severely impair normal mechanisms of body fluid homeostasis, including the antidiuretic response. In an earlier investigation of the pathways affected by these lesions, coronal cuts were placed between the level of the organum vasculosum lamina terminalis in the AV3V region and the level of the supraoptic nuclei. Rats with such cuts exhibited hyperdipsia and polyuria, but their plasma levels of antidiuretic hormone (ADH) were elevated. The fine structure of the supraoptic nucl

N-Methyl-D-aspartate Glutamate Receptor Modulates Cardiovascular and Neuroendocrine Responses Evoked by Hemorrhagic Shock in Rats.

Here, we report the participation of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) glutamate receptor in the mediation of cardiovascular and circulating vasopressin responses evoked by a hemorrhagic stimulus. In addition, once NMDA receptor activation is a prominent mechanism involved in nitric oxide (NO) synthesis in the brain, we investigated whether control of hemorrhagic shock by NMDA glutamate receptor was followed by changes in NO synthesis in brain supramedullary structures involved in cardiovascular and neuroendocrine control. Thus, we observed that intraperitoneal administration of the selective NMDA g

Targeted ablation of cardiac sympathetic neurons attenuates adverse postinfarction remodelling and left ventricular dysfunction.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? Can targeted ablation of cardiac sympathetic neurons suppress myocardial infarction-induced adverse cardiac remodelling and left ventricular dysfunction? What is the main finding and its importance? Targeted ablation of cardiac sympathetic neurons significantly alleviated sympathetic remodelling and neuroendocrine activation, attenuated cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis and improved left ventricular function. Thus, targeted ablation of cardiac sympathetic neurons might have a beneficial effect on adverse postinfarction remodelling and le

The orexin/hypocretin system: a critical regulator of neuroendocrine and autonomic function.

The hypocretins/orexins are hypothalamic peptides most recognized for their significant effects on feeding and arousal. Indeed, loss of the peptides results in a cataplexy quite similar to that observed canine models of human narcolepsy. However, neurons producing these peptides project to numerous brain sites known to be important in neuroendocrine regulation of pituitary function and autonomic centers as well. Results from numerous laboratories have suggested broad physiological roles for the hypocretins/orexins in neuroendocrine and autonomic regulation as a consequence of actions in the do

Lateralized effects of medial prefrontal cortex lesions on neuroendocrine and autonomic stress responses in rats.

The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) is highly activated by stress and modulates neuroendocrine and autonomic function. Dopaminergic inputs to mPFC facilitate coping ability and demonstrate considerable hemispheric functional lateralization. The present study investigated the potentially lateralized regulation of stress responses at the level of mPFC output neurons, using ibotenic acid lesions. Neuroendocrine function was assessed by plasma corticosterone increases in response to acute or repeated 20 min restraint stress. The primary index of autonomic activation was gastric ulcer development d

Correlation of high signal intensity of the pituitary stalk in macroadenoma and postoperative diabetes insipidus.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: High signal intensity (HSI) at the pituitary stalk is reported in pituitary adenomas. Our purpose was to clarify how and when this HSI formed, its long-term fate, and its relation to the function of infundibuloneurohypophyseal (INH) system. METHODS: Twenty-two patients with pituitary adenoma and supradiaphragmatic extension underwent 1.5-T MR imaging. Patients were assigned to two groups A (n = 18; those with stalk tip HSI) and B (n = 4; those without HSI) on postoperative T1-weighted images. Endocrine status was postoperatively evaluated and compared in both groups.

The anatomy of the adult uropodid Fuscouropoda agitans (Arachnida; Acari), with comparative observations on other Acari.

A thin, compressible, lateral suture and ventral plate overlap permit limited movement of the thick and rigid dorsal and ventral plates of Fuscouropoda agitans. Seven pairs of large dermal glands debouch onto the surface. Trochanteral rotation permits defensive leg adpresion and an insectan type of ambulation. The complex hypopharynx-pedipalpal-coxae has a buccal and cheliceral cavity separated by an atriculated epipharynx. The pharynx is Y-shaped in cross section. Extensive paired salivary glands lie above the very long and dexterous 3-segmented chelicerae, and a large pair of coxal glands de

Sex-specific associations of basal steroid hormones and neuropeptides with Conduct Disorder and neuroendocrine mediation of environmental risk.

Conduct Disorder (CD) is characterized by severe aggressive and antisocial behavior. The stress hormone system has frequently been investigated as a neurobiological correlate of CD, while other interacting neuroendocrine biomarkers of sex hormone or neuropeptide systems have rarely been studied, especially in females. We examined multiple basal neuroendocrine biomarkers in female and male adolescents with CD compared to healthy controls (HCs), and explored whether they mediate effects of environmental risk factors on CD. Within the FemNAT-CD study, salivary cortisol, alpha-amylase, testosteron

Klotho Is a Neuroprotective and Cognition-Enhancing Protein.

In this chapter, we will describe what has been learned about Klotho and its potential functions in the brain. Klotho is localized in the choroid plexus and, to a lesser extent, in hippocampal neurons. Cognitive decline is a common issue in human aging affecting over 50% of the population. This cognitive decline can also be seen in animal models such as the Rhesus monkey. A long-term study undertaken by our lab demonstrated that normal brain aging in rhesus monkeys and other animal models is associated with a significant downregulation of Klotho expression. This observation substantiates data

A mutation in TTF1/NKX2.1 is associated with familial neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia of infancy.

BACKGROUND: Neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia of infancy (NEHI) is a childhood diffuse lung disease of unknown etiology. We investigated the mechanism for lung disease in a subject whose clinical, imaging, and lung biopsy specimen findings were consistent with NEHI; the subject's extended family and eight other unrelated patients with NEHI were also investigated. METHODS: The proband's lung biopsy specimen (at age 7 months) and serial CT scans were diagnostic of NEHI. Her mother, an aunt, an uncle, and two first cousins had failure to thrive in infancy and chronic respiratory symptoms that impr

Fibromyalgia: an overview.

Fibromyalgia is the diagnosis given to individuals with chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain for which no alternative cause, such as tissue inflammation or damage, can be identified. Fibromyalgia is now believed to be, at least in part, a disorder of central pain processing that produces heightened responses to painful stimuli (hyperalgesia) and painful responses to nonpainful stimuli (allodynia). Aberrations in central pain processing may also be partly responsible for symptoms experienced in several chronic pain disorders that coaggregate with fibromyalgia, which is itself a product of ge

Neuroendocrine regulation of feminine sexual behavior: lessons from rodent models and thoughts about humans.

Much has been learned concerning the neuroendocrine processes and cellular mechanisms by which steroid hormones influence reproductive behaviors in rodents and other animals. In this review, a short discussion of hormones and feminine sexual behavior in some rodent species is followed by an outline of the main principles that have been learned from these studies. Examples are given of the importance of considering the timing of hormone treatments, dosage of hormone, use of a specific hormone, particular class of hormones, or form of hormone, interactions between hormones, route of administrati

Neuroendocrine and circadian aspects (melatonin and beta-endorphin) of atopic dermatitis in the child.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a disease of increasing incidence among paediatric patients. Among the factors involved in its pathogenesis is the alteration of the immune response, and so the objective of this study was to evaluate the involvement of certain neuroendocrine factors with immune properties in the development of the disease. Fifty-five subjects were selected and divided into the following three groups: healthy subjects, those diagnosed with symptomatic AD and those with asymptomatic AD. Plasma levels of melatonin and beta-endorphins were measured by radioimmunoassay, in serum samples o

Conditioned fear attenuates light-induced suppression of melatonin release in rats.

Male rats were given 5 min of intermittent footshock, or were not shocked, for 3 or 5 consecutive days in a novel context at the midpoint of the dark phase of a 12:12-h light:dark cycle. Six days later, animals were reexposed to the context without footshock and received either a 5-min light pulse or were not disturbed. Reexposure to the context significantly increased plasma corticosterone in animals previously shocked there. Prior context-shock pairings significantly attenuated the suppression of melatonin by light, but did not affect basal levels of melatonin. These results suggest that the

Altered serotonin function in suicide. Evidence from platelet and neuroendocrine studies.

Significant progress has been made in understanding psychosocial, psychological, and environmental factors associated with suicide; however, it is only recently that attention has been paid to the understanding of the neurobiology of suicide. There are several studies that implicate the serotonin (5-HT) system in suicide. Initial evidence was obtained from observations of low 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of depressed patients with a previous history of suicide attempts. Several strategies have been used to examine the serotonergic system in suicidal behavior

[Increase in neuroendocrine secretion granules in submaxillary and parotid glands in patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus].

The amount of neuroendocrine granules in microgranular cells of salivary glands were investigated in necropsies of 20 non-insulin dependent diabetics (NIDDM) and in 20 non-diabetic subjects with Grimelius and Fontana-Masson stainings. Granules in serous acini, and intercalated ducts were observed in both groups; however, a significant higher number of granules and microgranular cells were observed in NIDDM subjects as compared with non-diabetics. Both parotid and submaxillary glands were significantly heavier in NIDDM than in the non-diabetic group. These granules may be related to immunoreact

Metabolic interfaces between growth and reproduction. IV. Chronic pulsatile administration of growth hormone and the timing of puberty in the female sheep.

Puberty in the female lamb is accompanied by an increased frequency of LH pulses, and during normal development this is preceded by a decline in GH. Conversely, in the growth-retarded lamb, when LH levels are depressed by low nutrition, GH secretion is elevated. Based upon this inverse relationship, we tested the hypothesis that GH may act as a metabolic signal from the brain to inhibit the secretion of LH, and that the decline in GH times puberty. Our approach was to extend high circulating GH levels far beyond the early postnatal period, in a physiological pattern and level, in an attempt to
