Benign nevus cell aggregates in the thymus: a case report.

Aggregates of benign nevus cells occurring in lymph nodes are a well-described incidental finding. Nevus cell aggregates (NCAs) can mimic foci of metastatic carcinoma or other disease processes, so the surgical pathologist should be familiar with this lesion. The purpose of this report is to describe the potential diagnostic difficulties created by benign NCAs within the thymus of a 32-year-old man with dysplastic nevus syndrome and malignant melanoma involving mediastinal lymph nodes and the right lung. Morphologically, the NCAs in this case elicited the differential diagnoses of metastatic m…

Malignant blue nevus of the vulva with late ovarian metastasis.

We report a case of malignant blue nevus (MBN) of the vulva which led to an ovarian metastasis 15 years after the initial diagnosis. To our knowledge, this is the first report of MBN of the vulva. The patient was a 28-year-old woman with a nodule of the labia majora. The patient noted the lesion when she was 12 and stated it did not change at that time. The lesion had the histopathologic features of MBN and was characterized by a low mitotic rate but substantial cytologic atypia. No abnormality was noticed over a 15 year period of follow-up. Fifteen years after the initial diagnosis, vaginal e…

Diastematomyelia: a congenital anomaly not to be confused with a giant hairy nevus.

The role of the plastic surgeon in the diagnosis and management of congenital anomalies is often a complicated one that involves the integration of input from numerous specialists into the evaluation process. Diastematomyelia is a serious neurosurgical problem that often presents with cutaneous findings in a neurologically asymptomatic patient. Early recognition of these cutaneous manifestations by the plastic surgeon, evaluation with an MRI scan, and consultation with a pediatric neurosurgeon can prevent delayed diagnosis of this surgically correctable anomaly and irreversible neurologic sequ

Treatment of nevus of Ota with the Q-switched ruby laser.

BACKGROUND: Nevus of Ota is a benign bluish or gray-brown lesion of the eye and the surrounding skin that has been reported to occur in about 1 in 200 people in Japan. Prior treatments have either been ineffective or caused scarring. The Q-switched ruby laser can produce very short high-energy pulses and can selectively target cells that contain pigment, such as dermal melanocytes. METHODS: We treated the skin lesions of 114 patients (25 male and 89 female) with nevi of Ota with a Q-switched ruby laser set to deliver pulses of 6 J per square centimeter of body-surface area at a wavelength of …

Lack of adrenergic influence on the pigmentation of iris nevus cells.

A 30-year-old woman was found to have iris heterochromia as a consequence of unilateral congenital Horner's syndrome, Iris nevi were present and were equally darkly pigmented in either eye. Based on these clinical observations, we conclude that the absence of sympathetic innervation does not influence the development and pigmentation of iris nevus cells.

Skeletal anomalies and keratocysts in the basal cell nevus syndrome.

Five cases with multiple jaw cysts from two families, and two other unrelated patients are presented. Multiple keratocysts of the jaws were … d mandibular prognathism and dural calcification was seen. Therefore, what is called the basal cell nevus syndrome may be regarded as a skeletal dystrophy syndrome. Based on the family pedigrees, an autosomal dominant inheritance with poor penetration seems probable.

A cellular blue nevus with pigmented epithelioid melanocytoma-like pattern on the ipsilateral upper arm associated with a congenital plaque-type blue nevus on the hand.

A 36-year-old man presented with a subcutaneous nodule on the right upper arm. A small nodule had developed 8 years earlier, and grew in size, accompanied by a tingling sensation and numbness. In addition, he had a bluish irregular patch on the right hand since birth, which crossed from the palm to the dorsal hand. Skin biopsies from the hand showed a heavily pigmented melanocyte proliferation in the dermis with perieccrine, perivascular, and perineural involvement, and a diagnosis of congenital plaque-type blue nevus was made. The tumor on the arm was located closely along the median nerve, a…

Intramedullary and retroperitoneal melanocytic tumor associated with congenital blue nevus and nevus flammeus: an uncommon combination of neurocutaneous melanosis and phacomatosis pigmentovascularis--case report.

Neurocutaneous melanosis (NCM) is a rare condition characterized by central nervous system melanocytic tumors associated with congenital melanocytic nevi. Phacomatosis pigmentovascularis (PPV) is an association of vascular nevus with pigmentary nevus. Aberrant maturation of neural crest-derived cells is considered to be related to pathogenesis in both conditions. However, association of NCM and PPV has not been reported to the best of our knowledge. Melanocytoma, which usually involves the leptomeninges or spinal cord, is extremely rare in the retroperitoneum. We present here a case of a patie…

Comet assay demonstrates a higher ultraviolet B sensitivity to DNA damage in dysplastic nevus cells than in common melanocytic nevus cells and foreskin melanocytes.

We used the single cell gel electrophoresis assay (comet assay) to study ultraviolet B (UVB)-induced DNA damage in pigment cells. This assay … etween UV dose and the migration coefficient of the comet tail in all three types of pigment cells. Nevus cells originating from dysplastic nevi showed the highest sensitivity to UVB irradiation: 65% higher induction of DNA damage compared to the induction in foreskin melanocytes. Common melanocytic nevus cells were most resistant and showed a 30% lower …

Nevus lipomatosus cutaneous superficialis presenting as a coalescent gluteal plaque.

Nevus lipomatosus cutaneous superficialis (NLCS) is a rare benign cutaneous hamartoma characterised by the presence of mature adipose tissue within the dermis. We report the case of a woman in her mid-20s who presented with an uncomfortable progressively enlarging lesion over the gluteal region. Histopathological examination of a skin biopsy demonstrated mature adipocytes interspersed among dermal collagen bundles, confirming the diagnosis. The patient underwent surgical excision for symptomatic relief, with no recurrence at one-year follow-up. This case underscores the importance of clinicopa…

Periungual Bowen Disease Mimicking a Melanocytic Nevus: A Case Report.

Periungual Bowen disease is an uncommon form of squamous cell carcinoma in situ that may mimic benign pigmented lesions, such as melanocytic nevi. We report a case of a 36-year-old man who presented with an irregularly shaped brown macule on the periungual area of the right third finger, with a history of gradual enlargement over 8 years. The patient reported occasional periungual trauma because of nail picking but had no significant medical history. A punch biopsy was performed, and histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of Bowen disease. The lesion was completely excised, and

Case Report: Prenatal ultrasound presentation of congenital melanocytic nevus syndrome.

Congenital melanocytic nevus (CMN) syndrome is a rare, non-familial neural ectodermal dysplasia characterized by CMN combined with extracutaneous abnormalities, predominantly involving the central nervous system (CNS). The pathogenesis of CMN syndrome is thought to result from early post-zygotic somatic mutations. CNS melanosis frequently affects the anterior temporal lobes, brainstem, cerebellum, and cerebral cortex. Magnetic resonance imaging typically demonstrates T1 hyperintensity associated with CNS melanosis, while ultrasound often reveals abnormal echogenicity. We report a case of a fet…

Melanoma Developing from an Intradermal Nevus: Report on Two Patients.

Dear Editor, Approximately 25-33% of cutaneous melanomas arise from nevi (1). Shitara et al. suggested that junctional and compound nevi are more likely give rise to melanoma than intradermal nevi, but this has not been definitively confirmed (2). Based on these results and our own clinical observation on rare malignant transformation in intradermal nevi, we present two patients with melanoma developing from an intradermal nevus. The first patient, a 63-year-old woman, presented with a suspicious lesion in 2017 on the upper back in the form of a dark brown macula juxtapositioned next to the de…

[Basal cell nevus syndrome: the interface between dentistry and dermatology].

Basal cell nevus syndrome is a rare, autosomal dominant disorder, predominantly caused by a mutation in the PTCH1 gene. As basal cell carcinomas and keratocysts are the most common abnormalities, dermatologists, orofacial maxillary surgeons, and dentists play a key role in patient care. From the age of 8, screening for odontogenic keratocysts with an orthopantomogram or MRI is recommended every other year. The intensity increases to annual screening after the development of the first odontogenic keratocyst. If BCNS is caused by an underlying SUFU mutation, screening is not indicated since ther…
