The use of the Modified Norton Scale in nursing-home patients.

Patients in three nursing-home wards in Sweden were in 1991 assessed by the Modified Norton Scale (MNS). Of the 71 patients, 38 (49%) were considered to be at risk of developing pressure sores. Six of the patients had a total of eight pressure sores. Five sores were assessed as stage II, two sores as stage III and one sore as stage IV. Only two of the six patients with pressure sores had any preventive equipment in their beds. The nursing and medical documentation of the existing pressure sores was not satisfactory. Individual programs for skin care and routine assessment with a pressure sore

Using the connecting process to meet family caregiver needs.

Individuals who engage in caregiving responsibilities for dependent family members in the home setting face challenges that are little understood by others outside the circle of care. Because a large portion of energy is devoted to caregiving tasks, caregivers potentially fail to devote attention to meeting their own needs. The purpose of this study was to develop a beginning substantive theory describing the needs perceived by caregivers and the processes by which these caregivers are able to get their individual needs met. Grounded theory methodology was used to facilitate the identification

Male circumcision, HIV and sexually transmitted infections: a review.

Three randomized controlled trials in sub-Saharan Africa have shown that circumcision reduces the risk of acquiring HIV infection in men by approximately 60%. In this paper, we review the evidence that male circumcision protects against infection with HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in men and their female partners. Data from the clinical trials indicate that circumcision may be protective against genital ulcer disease, Herpes simplex type 2, Trichomonas vaginalis and human papillomavirus infection in men. No evidence exists of a protective effect against Chlamydia trachom

A case of biatrial drainage of the right superior vena cava.

Biatrial drainage of the right superior vena cava resulting from a sinus venosus defect is a rare congenital malformation. It can result in severe desaturation although a sinus venosus defect usually presents as a left-to-right shunt. A male baby was noted to have cyanosis while nursing and was referred to us for medical treatment on his second day of life. Echocardiography showed that most of the blood flowing through the superior vena cava drained into the left atrium. He underwent successful surgery to correct this defect at the age of 2 years.

Urinary incontinence and its correlates in very old age.

The study describes the prevalence of urinary incontinence and factors associated with incontinence among the population of Tampere aged 84/85 years (n = 320). 18% of the males were occasionally incontinent and 21% were daily incontinent. The corresponding figures for females were 20 and 21% respectively. Incontinence was not associated with sex, living alone, parity, or outdoor toilet facilities. On the other hand, incontinence was found to be related to use of home nursing, home help or day hospital services, living in institutions, limitations in mobility, and the use of diuretics.

Patient assessment of anogenital warts and the success of treatment with home applied therapy.

Home treatment with podophyllotoxin or imiquimod are commonly prescribed therapies for anogenital warts. It is important to ascertain if patients are locating all lesions for treatment and if they know when they are clear of them. We set out to assess patients' ability to determine the number and location of their genital warts and compare their observation with that of their examining doctor or nurse. Following instruction on the use of home treatment and being given an instruction leaflet patients were reviewed in four weeks' time. One hundred and fifty-five patients enrolled in the study--3

NURSE-Led Care in Patients Undergoing Catheter Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation: The NURSECAT-AF Randomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with reduced quality of life and frequent hospitalizations. Integrated nurse-led care (NLC) has proven beneficial in unselected AF patients, but evidence specific to patients undergoing catheter ablation is limited. We aimed to assess the impact of a structured nurse-led intervention in patients undergoing first-time AF ablation. METHODS: NURSECAT-AF was a single-center prospective randomized clinical trial comparing usual care with NLC, which incorporated an AF educational program, peri-procedural support, and risk factor management. Better palliative care for residents of inpatient nursing homes through qualification of nursing staff - a cluster randomised study.

BACKGROUND: In Germany, 80-90% of people require palliative care in the final stages of life. Inpatient care facilities are increasingly becoming the final place of residence for many people, and therefore also often their place of death. Inadequate identification of palliative care needs can result in substandard palliative care in nursing homes, where residents are often admitted to the hospital towards the end of their lives. This study investigated whether a special palliative care qualifications for nursing staff could improve the care for residents in inpatient care facilities. METHODS:

Supporting d/Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Students in a School of Nursing: Lessons Learned.

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, a United States federal law, states that colleges and universities that receive federal and financial aid must make accommodations for students with disabilities. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 defines disability as a mental or physical impairment that significantly limits one or more major life activities (include walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, learning, breathing, working, and caring for oneself). Disabilities can be multifarious; barriers to complete access can be physical, architectural, or attitudinal. Approximately 19% of U

Beyond base pairs: Using simulation to build genomic competency in pediatric nurse practitioners.

Genomics is a lifespan competency that has relevance for pediatric nursing practice. Identifying individuals who could benefit from genomic healthcare can enable timely diagnosis and treatment to improve health and wellbeing outcomes. Nurse practitioners (NPs) must have genomic competency to provide high quality, comprehensive pediatric care and support families through the continuum of care. To date, integrating genomics into nursing curricula has been inconsistent and piecemeal. We describe the structure, process, and initial outcomes of a novel genomic nursing simulation for pediatric NP st

Substance Use Among Nurses and Nursing Students: A Joint Position Statement of the Emergency Nurses Association and the International Nurses Society on Addictions.

Alcohol and other substance use by nurses potentially places patients, the public, and nurses themselves at risk for serious injury or death. Nursing students are also at risk for problems related to substance use. When viewed and treated as a chronic medical illness, treatment outcomes for substance use disorders are comparable with those of other diseases and can result in lasting benefits. Professional monitoring programs that employ an alternative-to-discipline approach have been shown to be effective in the treatment of health professionals with substance use disorders and are considered
