Hospitalized patients, especially those who are critically ill, are often at risk for malnutrition and may require nutritional support. Although the enteral approach is generally preferred when providing nutritional support, parenteral nutrition is frequently required. These patients are also likely to receive therapeutic or prophylactic parenteral histamine (H2)-receptor antagonists. Patients receiving both total parenteral nutrition and parenteral H2-receptor antagonists may benefit from receiving the drug in combination with the total parenteral nutrition admixture. Parenteral cimetidine an

To evaluate the claim that delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity skin testing is useful in nutritional assessment of hospitalized patients, we reviewed the English language literature of the last 12 years. Although several hundred publications discussed delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity testing and nutritional status, only 15 provided new, objective data correlating these variables in hospitalized adults. Of these, only three provided age-matched control groups to control for antigen variability, lack of prior exposure, and other technical problems. The majority of reports took no account of dis

The purpose of this research was to assess the association between sleep disorders and coronary heart disease (CHD) using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database. This cross-sectional study included 9886 eligible participants with valid data on sleep disorders and CHD from the NHANES from 2011 to 2014. The complex NHANES sampling led to use of sample weights in analyses. Various statistical methods and covariates were utilized. Significance was set at P < .05. Receiver operating characteristic curves were used to assess the diagnostic efficacy of sleep

Neurological disorders are the major cause of disability, leading to a decrease in quality of life by impairing cognitive, sensorimotor, and motor functioning. Several factors have been proposed in the pathogenesis of neurobehavioral changes, including nutritional, environmental, and genetic predisposition. Vitamin D (VD) is an environmental and nutritional factor that is widely distributed in the central nervous system's subcortical grey matter, neurons of the substantia nigra, hippocampus, thalamus, and hypothalamus. It is implicated in the regulation of several brain functions by preserving

Health disparities among people experiencing homelessness are likely exacerbated by limited access to healthy, fresh, and minimally processed foods. Soup kitchens and shelters serve as essential food safety nets for preventing hunger in this population, and community interest is growing in the potential of "food is medicine" interventions to improve the mental and physical wellbeing of people who receive meals from these providers. This study describes our two-phase approach to first identify and prioritize nutrition needs within an urban soup kitchen community and then test and implement new

Nutrition is intimately linked to pulmonary function and an understanding of these relationships have therapeutic utility. Malnutrition is known to be associated with impaired mechanical function of the lung in both chronic and acute respiratory insufficiency. Refeeding results in improvement in functional characteristics and may be critical in the weaning of patients from mechanical ventilation. In contrast, overfeeding may result in an increased ventilatory demand resulting in the inability to wean from respiratory support. This article considers the background as well as recommendations for

Over 12 months, 26 malnourished patients had 30 episodes of leukopenia while receiving total parenteral nutrition (TPN). There were 22 episodes of leukopenia associated with high temperatures (greater than 37.8 degrees C) A TPN-induced septicemia was the cause of fever in one patient. One patient with slight transient fever received no antibiotics, and 21 febrile patients were treated with various broad-spectrum antibiotics. The average duration of leukopenia was 6.9 days, and the average nadir of leukopenia was 789/cu mm. Eleven patients died during or within two weeks of the neutropenic epis

OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of protein-calorie malnutrition, characteristics, and clinical importance of nutrition disorders in patients with liver cirrhosis according to severity of disease.
METHODS: Nutrition assessments such as subjective global assessment, anthropometric and biochemical measurements, immunocompentency, thiamin and riboflavin status in 60 patients with cirrhosis (33 male and 27 female) were recorded between June 1999 and December 1999 at an outpatient clinic at Ramathibodi Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand. The origin of liver disease was …

INTRODUCTION: Advances in treatment strategies for gastric and esophageal cancer have led to improved long-term outcomes, however the local and systemic effects of the primary tumor, neoadjuvant therapies and surgery, result in specific nutritional challenges. Comprehensive nutritional evaluation and support represents a core component of multidisciplinary holistic care for this patient population.
AREAS COVERED: We provide a detailed overview of nutritional challenges in gastric and esophageal cancer, with a focus on malignant obstruction, preoperative optimization and survivorship. We discu

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of consensus on what is the most appropriate treatment of moderate acute malnutrition (MAM).
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine if provision of ready-to-use-therapeutic food (RUTF) and antibiotics to "high-risk" MAM (HR-MAM) children in addition to nutritional counseling would result in higher recovery and less deterioration than nutrition counseling alone.
METHODS: At the 11 intervention clinics, HR-MAM children were given RUTF and amoxicillin along with standard nutrition counseling, for 2-12 wk. All others received 6 wk of nutrition counseling alone. HR-MAM was

In the past year, some relevant papers related to the diagnosis of malnutrition and its pathogenesis in cirrhosis have been published. The value of anthropometrics in the nutritional assessment of end-stage cirrhotic patients has been reinforced. Also, the role of bioelectrical impedance analysis in these patients has been redefined. Several papers have investigated the relationship between leptin and malnutrition in chronic liver disease, particularly the role of alcoholism in hyperleptinaemia, and the importance of protein-bound leptin in these patients. In other papers, the impact of both u

The Metabolic and Infusion Support Service (MISS) at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital was established in 1988 to improve the quality of nutritional support given to children undergoing therapy for cancer. This multidisciplinary group, representing each of the clinical services within the hospital, provides a range of services to all patients requiring full enteral or parenteral nutritional support. In 1991, the MISS developed an algorithm for nutritional support which emphasized a demand for a compelling rationale for choosing parenteral over enteral support in patients with functional ga

Major surgery is essential in the treatment of esophageal cancer. Nutritional depletion may play some role in a high likelihood of postoperative complication following esophagectomy. The aim of this study was to determine whether preoperative nutritional support could restore the nutritional status and reduce the incidence of postoperative pneumonia in malnourished patients with esophageal cancer. Fifty-one malnourished patients undergoing transthoracic esophagectomy were studied (group I: 19 patients, 70 years of age or older; group II: 32 patients, 69 years of age or younger). All of them re

Background/Objectives: Optimal infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices are crucial to addressing the double burden of malnutrition (DBM), encompassing undernutrition (including micronutrient deficiencies) and overnutrition. This study examined the demographic and socioeconomic determinants of IYCF practices, and their impacts on the DBM among 2039 Vietnamese children aged 6-23 months from the General Nutrition Survey 2020. Methods: Thirteen IYCF indicators recommended by the WHO/UNICEF were evaluated. Associations between IYCF indicators and outcome variables were assessed using logist

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a chronic functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by abdominal pain associated with defecation or a change in bowel habits. Gut microbiota, which acts as a real organ with well-defined functions, is in a mutualistic relationship with the host, harvesting additional energy and nutrients from the diet and protecting the host from pathogens; specific alterations in its composition seem to play a crucial role in IBS pathophysiology. It is well known that diet can significantly modulate the intestinal microbiota profile but it is less known how different

Although pica is commonly associated with nutritional deficiencies, it is also observed in psychiatric disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder and less commonly in schizophrenia. We describe a case of pica in a 34-year-old male with decompensated schizophrenia. Emergency medical services brought the patient from a state facility as he was scavenging and eating foreign objects. Upon initial evaluation, no notable nutritional deficiencies were noted. After surgical removal of foreign objects, he was started on antipsychotics. His pica was determined to be due to his active psychosis invo
