PURPOSE: Upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) are rare tumors with a poor prognosis. The standard treatment for localized disease is based on total nephroureterectomy (NUT) followed by platinum-based adjuvant chemotherapy for eligible patients at risk of recurrence. However, many patients have renal failure after surgery preventing chemotherapy. The betel-nut chewing habit and the intake of chillies in the diet were analysed in 178 chewers identified during a stratified random survey and in 124 hospital patients suffering from submucous fibrosis (SF).
