Temperament as a predictor of behavior during initial dental examination in children.

Temperament refers to children's behavioral style, or the manner in which they interact with their environment. Temperament has been quantified into nine temperament categories and five temperament constellations by Thomas and Chess. Temperament categories and constellations of children can be measured using one of several parental questionnaires, each of which focuses on age-appropriate behavior. For this study the Behavioral Style Questionnaire (BSQ) was administered to the parents of 50 healthy children (mean age 48.8 months) receiving initial dental examinations. The examinations were vide

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV: phenotypic consequences of a splicing mutation in one COL3A1 allele.

The features of a child with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV (EDS IV) resulting from a mutation in one COL3A1 allele were studied. The child was heterozygous for a G- to A-transition at the splice donor site of intron 41. It resulted in the splicing out of the exon 41 encoded sequence from alpha 1(III) mRNA and the deletion of 36 amino acids from glycine775 to lysine810 of the triple helical domain of alpha 1(III) chains of type III collagen. The amount of type III collagen in the dermis was only about 11% of normal. The child had the acrogeric form of EDS IV. He had the characteristic facies w

Outcome of liver disease associated with alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency (PiZ). Implications for genetic counselling and antenatal diagnosis.

We reviewed the hepatic features in 136 children with alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency (PiZ). Eighty two were studied prospectively, 74 of whom had chronic liver disease. Sixty seven children with liver disease presented in the first four months of life, four were older infants and children with chronic liver disease, 10 (three with liver disease) were identified in studies of the family of these propositi, and one was identified when she had liver disease associated with infectious mononucleosis. By 17 years of age 20 of these 74 children with chronic liver disease had died, 20 had established

A natural zoonotic giardiasis: Infection of a child via Giardia cysts in pet chinchilla droppings.

Here, we report a case of direct zoonotic transmission of giardiasis between a pet chinchilla and a human. Microscopic and molecular examinations of stool samples from a child and samples of chinchilla droppings revealed cysts/DNA of Giardia intestinalis. The transmission from the chinchilla to the child has been confirmed as coprophagous after the 1-year-old toddler ingested pet chinchilla droppings. Molecular analysis of the gdh gene from both hosts classified the G. intestinalis cysts into the assemblage B genetic group, which has been previously shown to be characteristic of both human and

Child maltreatment reports in Israel: the intersection between community socioeconomic characteristics and ethnicity.

The authors examined the relationship between community characteristics and child maltreatment reports in Israel, comparing Jewish and Arab localities both in terms of maltreatment reports and the responses of the social services to these reports. Administrative data were obtained from the protective services and the Central Bureau of Statistics for 231 local authorities in Israel (covering 98% of children in Israel). Jewish communities showed significantly more reports of sexual abuse and physical abuse than Arab communities. Reporting rates also showed different associations with socioeconom

Hypovolemic shock due to severe gastrointestinal bleeding in a child taking an herbal syrup.

We report the case of a 4-years-old boy who was admitted with hypovolemic shock due to a severe gastrointestinal bleeding. The esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGDS) showed hiatus hernia, erosions and ulcerations of the lower esophagus, possibly due to a gastroesophageal reflux, and a small duodenal erosion. The child was previously healthy and he had never shown any symptoms related to this condition. The only product taken by the child in the previous days was a syrup containing several herbs, among which Filipendula ulmaria (L.) Maxim. and Salix spp. (known to contain salicylates), marketed as f

[Infective endocarditis in patients with chronic hepatic failure: a four cases series].

Infective endocarditis and liver cirrhosis is an infrequent association. A retrospective study was performed in order to characterize predisposing factors, microbial causes and evolution. Medical records between 1995 and 2008 (June) were searched. Four cases were identified. In three cases liver cirrhosis was in stage Child A, and in all 4 there was a predisposing cardiac disease. Clinical manifestations were classical in 3 cases and in one presented as hepatic failure. Only in one case a typical agent was recovered. Other cases were associated to a nosocomial agent or Corynebacterium sp. [cor

Partner aggression and children's externalizing problems: maternal and partner warmth as protective factors.

This research examined maternal and partner warmth as moderators of the relation between men's intimate partner aggression and children's externalizing problems. Participants were 157 mothers and their children (ages 7-9 years). Results indicate that maternal and partner warmth each moderated the relation between men's intimate partner aggression and children's externalizing problems. Partner-to-mother aggression was positively associated with child reports of externalizing problems at lower, but not higher, levels of maternal warmth. Similarly, partner-to-mother aggression was positively asso

CHILD syndrome caused by a deletion of exons 6-8 of the NSDHL gene.

The X-linked dominant CHILD syndrome (congenital hemidysplasia with ichthyosiform nevus and limb defects) is a rare developmental defect characterized by a strictly lateralized inflammatory nevus. In the majority of cases, the right side of the body is affected. Ipsilateral hypoplastic lesions may involve the brain, skeletal structures, lungs, heart or kidneys. We describe a case of CHILD syndrome involving the left side of the body. Absence of metacarpal, metatarsal and phalangeal bones of the left hand and foot resulted in oligodactyly, with only 3 fingers and 1 toe. An ipsilateral inflammat

The effect of parental age, birth order and other variables on early childhood mortality: a Caribbean example.

The 4275 births to women of native ancestry that took place on the island of St Barthélemy, French West Indies between 1878 and 1970 were analyzed according to the sex of the child, the year of birth, maternal age, maternal parity, paternal age and the number of children the father already had to determine the effects of these variables on rates of perinatal death, death before age 1 and death before age 5. The year of birth, the number of children the father already had, and maternal parity influenced death before age 1 and death before age 5. The sex of the child also influenced the probabil

Predicting treatment outcome in nocturnal enuresis.

A presenting sample of 127 consecutive referrals to a community based enuresis clinic were evaluated after treatment with baseline behavioural recording and the enuresis alarm. Almost one in five became dry after baseline recording only while 81 of 96 (84%) enuretics who used the alarm achieved the initial dryness criterion. Successful outcome was associated with the absence of adverse environmental factors and psychiatric disorders in the child. A logistic regression procedure enabled a risk score to be created so that successful outcome could be predicted. Psychiatric disorder in the child,

Parental depressive symptoms and child psychopathology: Indirect effects of parenting-specific emotion regulation and emotion socialization.

OBJECTIVE: The study explores the associations among parental depressive symptoms, child symptoms of psychopathology, emotion socialization (ES), and parenting-specific emotion regulation (ER) using a novel measure, the Regulating Emotions in Parenting Scale (REPS). BACKGROUND: There is a notable correlation between parental depressive symptoms and symptoms of psychopathology in children. Empirical studies have also observed a correlation in the intergenerational patterns of ER, as well as their relations to ES. Investigating these relations in nonclinical samples is vital for understanding t

Preliminary development of a measure of parental behavioral responses to everyday pains in young children: the PREP.

INTRODUCTION: Everyday pains are experienced frequently by young children. Parent responses shape how young children learn about and experience pain. However, research on everyday pains in toddlers and preschoolers is scarce, and no self-report measures of parent responses to their child's pain exist for this age group. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to develop a preliminary self-report measure of parent behavioral responses to everyday pains in the toddler and preschool years (the PREP) and examine its relationship with child age, sex, and parent and child distress. METHODS: It

[PEDOPHILIA AS A CAUSE OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE: A MEDICAL AND LEGAL PROBLEM].

The purpose of our study is to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the phenomenon of pedophilia in the context of child protection from sexual abuse, as well as to substantiate the need for treatment of persons with sexual perversions as a way to prevent sexual violence against children. Despite the normative consolidation of the inadmissibility of violence against children, including sexual violence, and the current system of preventive measures, today minors are the most victimized group of people. Of particular concern is not only the physical harm caused to a child as a result of sexual

Mothers and Fathers Parenting Stress and Their Perception of Children's Psychosocial Functioning in Paediatric Diabetes: A Pilot Study.

(1) Background: In the context of a child with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM), the rearrangement of the family's lifestyle can account for an increased risk of experiencing psychosocial problems for both child and parents. Those few studies on pediatric diabetes, which focused on parents' perception of children's psychological strengths and weaknesses, reported significantly higher rates of children's emotional and conduct problems associated with an imbalance in the Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). The main aim of this paper was to assess the role of parental perception of children's psychosocial sym

Changes in the prevalence of child maltreatment in Vietnam over 10 years.

OBJECTIVES: In the context of the shortage of studies on child maltreatment changes over time in limited resource settings, this paper explored the changes in the prevalence of multiple types of child maltreatment over a period of 10 years in Vietnam and tested the moderating role of some demographic characteristics in these changes. METHODS: We used data from two prevalence studies conducted in 2004 and in 2014 using similar methodologies. Both studies used self-report questionnaires which were completed by randomly selected students aged 12-17 years from different provinces in Vietnam. We a

The effects of child maltreatment on the developing brain.

Lasting effects of child abuse and neglect are well recognised. Apart from physical effects resulting from injuries and neglect, the effects are on behaviour, emotional well-being, interpersonal relationships and cognitive functioning. These psychological aspects are now known to have their counterparts in brain structure, chemistry and function. The growing knowledge of brain development has shed new light on our understanding of the processes by which especially early abuse and neglect may have a profound effect on the child's later adjustment. The brain undergoes its greatest growth and dev

Pain at age eight as a predictor of antidepressant medication use by age 24: findings from the Finnish nationwide 1981 birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The existing knowledge about long-term psychosocial consequences of childhood pain is scarce. The current study investigated childhood pain symptoms as potential risk factors for antidepressant use in adolescence and early adulthood. METHODS: A representative sample of eight-year-old children (n=6017) and their parents were asked about the prevalence of the child's headache, abdominal pain, and unspecified pain symptoms. The associations with antidepressant purchases by age 24, based on the nationwide prescription register, were analyzed separately for each symptom and each report
