Comparison of imaging parameters between OCT, GDx and HRT in the Northern Finland birth cohort eye study.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to assess and compare the optic nerve head (ONH) and retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) parameters and image quality parameters obtained by Cirrus HD-OCT, GDxECC and HRT3 in a population-based screening study. METHODS: This analysis examined 2566 subjects taking part in the Northern Finland Birth Cohort Eye study. Images with spectral domain OCT (Cirrus HD-OCT 4000), scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (HRT3) and scanning laser polarimetry (GDxECC) were obtained from each subject. The correlation of average and regional parameters of RNFL and ONH between devices

Segmentation technique and dynamic ensemble selection to enhance glaucoma severity detection.

The severity of glaucoma can be observed by categorising glaucoma diseases into several classes based on a classification process. The two most suitable parameters, cup-to-disc ratio (CDR) and peripapillary atrophy (PPA), which are commonly used to identify glaucoma are utilized in this study to strengthen the classification. First, an active contour snake (ACS) is employed to retrieve both optic disc (OD) and optic cup (OC) values, which are required to calculate the CDR. Moreover, Otsu segmentation and thresholding techniques are used to identify PPA, and the features are then extracted usin

Early effects of viper envenomation on retina and optic nerve blood flow: An optical coherence tomography angiography study.

In this study, the early retinal and optic nerve blood flows of patients exposed to Viper bite were evaluated with non-invasive optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and compared with healthy controls. The retinal and optic disc OCTA data of 31 victims of viper bite (group S) without systemic envenomation clinical symptoms and 31 healthy controls (group C) were compared. Only patients with early signs of envenomation were included in the study. Optical coherence tomography angiographies were performed with RTVue XR Avanti with AngioVue software. Vascular densities in the whole image,

Compartmental Differences in Macular Retinal Ganglion Cell Function.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate local differences of macular retinal ganglion cell (RGC) function by means of the steady-state pattern electroretinogram (SS-PERG). METHODS: SS-PERGs were recorded in healthy subjects (n = 43) in response to gratings (1.6 c/deg, 15.63 reversals/s, and 98% contrast) presented on an LED display (800 cd/m2, 12.5 degrees eccentricity at 30 cm viewing distance) partitioned in triangular sectors (inferior [I]; nasal [N]; superior [S]; and temporal [T]) or concentric regions (central [C] and annulus [A]). For each partition, response amplitude (n

Optical coherence tomography in the setting of optic nerve head cupping reversal in secondary childhood glaucoma.

Reversal of optic nerve head (ONH) cupping has been considered an important clinical observation that signals surgical success and control of intraocular pressure (IOP) in childhood glaucoma. Many theories based on elasticity of pediatric eyes have been proposed, including anterior movement of the elastic lamina cribrosa or shrinkage of the scleral canal. The relationship between these factors and axonal loss is unclear when reversal of cupping has been observed. Retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) optical coherence tomography (OCT) can help to clarify this. We present a case series of 4 pediatri

Atlas-based score for automatic glaucoma risk stratification.

Glaucoma is a disease that affects the optic nerve and can lead to blindness. The cup-to-disc ratio (CDR) measurement is one of the key clinical indicators for glaucoma assessment. However, the CDR only evaluates the relative sizes of the cup and optic disc (OD) via their diameters, and does not characterize local morphological changes that can inform clinicians on early signs of glaucoma. In this work, we propose a novel glaucoma score based on a statistical atlas framework that automatically quantifies the deformations of the OD region induced by glaucoma. A deep-learning approach is first u

Relationship between peripapillary atrophy and myopia progression in the eyes of young school children.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Myopia progression is of great concern because of its association with an increased risk of sight-threatening conditions. This study aims to determine whether certain clinical and optic disc features are associated with the rate of myopia progression. SUBJECTS/METHODS: In this retrospective longitudinal observational study, we reviewed the medical records of 95 patients aged 6-11 years with myopia (spherical equivalent refractive error (SER) at baseline ≤ -0.5 D) and collected data regarding medical history, comprehensive ophthalmologic examination, and fundus photograp

Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography in Awake Rabbits Allows Identification of the Visual Streak, a Comparison with Histology.

PURPOSE: To evaluate visual streak (VS) identification on spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) scans in awake rabbits. To report thickness measurements in the VS and adjacent retina on OCT B-scans and histologic sections and to assess inter-method bias, precision and repeatability between OCT and histology. METHODS: Vertical SD-OCT B-scan images through the optic nerve head and VS were acquired from 16 awake, ophthalmologically healthy experimental rabbits. Scans were acquired from both eyes, which were later enucleated and processed for light microscopy. Inner retina, inner

Acute ischemic atrophy of papilla disc and diabetes.

Acute ischemic neuropathy is the acute ischemic necrosis of the optic nerve fibers occurred by the occlusion of small vessels which distribute widely to lamina cribrosa and anterior et posterior area of lamina cribrosa. Pale coloured edema and light swelling are seen generally on the optic disc, and after a few months falls in simplex nerve atrophy. I have explained my 3 cases of ischemic neuropathies. They have some things in common, and causes are considered arteriosclerosis or temporal arteritis in old people, and often takes place based on diabetes mellitus, lupus erythematosis or another

Investigating motile ciliopathies in a pediatric case of an abnormal optic nerve head.

INTRODUCTION: A congenital optic nerve head anomaly (CONHA) is an umbrella term for structurally abnormal optic nerve heads present at birth which may lead to vision loss. The potential roles of motile and non-motile ciliopathies in this process are not well understood. This report describes a pediatric case of CONHA and implicates a motile ciliopathy in a possible mechanism that affects embryogenesis of the optic nerve head. CASE PRESENTATION: A 21-month-old male with a normal prenatal and postnatal course, past medical history of recurrent upper and lower airway infections, and no known ocu

Myriad of congenital excavated optic disc anomalies in achondroplasia.

Achondroplasia is a genetic condition resulting from specific disruptions in the formation of endochondral bone. Telecanthus, exotropia, angle anomalies and cone-rod dystrophy have been observed as associated ophthalmic features in patients with achondroplasia. Here, we present a case of achondroplasia associated with unique ocular features including telecanthus, esotropia and bilateral microphthalmos. Fundus evaluation revealed a distinctive combination of optic disc anomalies, namely, optic disc coloboma, morning glory disc and optic disc pit maculopathy, along with retroorbital cysts. This
