Concurrent ovarian serous carcinoma and osteogenesis imperfecta.

Because epithelial malignancies in patients with osteogenesis imperfecta are rare, it has been postulated that these patients may have "cancer-protection". A case of stage III b ovarian serous carcinoma in a woman with congenital osteogenesis imperfecta is now presented and discussed.

Prenatal diagnosis of osteogenesis imperfecta type III.

Ultrasonographic and radiographic evaluation of a fetus at risk for osteogenesis imperfecta (O.I) type III was performed. Real-time ultrasound measurements at 15 weeks gestation were interpreted as normal, but at 20 and 22 weeks of gestation revealed marked shortening of the long bones and deformity of the femurs. The findings were confirmed by fetal radiography at 22 weeks gestation. Radiographic and histologic changes characteristic of O.I. were observed in the aborted fetus. Thus the antenatal manifestations of O.I. type III maybe severe enough to make prenatal diagnosis possible in the sec…

Early semiclosed intramedullary stabilization in osteogenesis imperfecta.

Fourteen patients with severe osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) were treated operatively by closed or semiclosed intramedullary stabilization, with nonextensible rods and nails. Altogether, 55 bones (both upper and lower limbs) were stabilized primarily. In infants with a severe form of OI (Sillence classification), the operative technique was modified significantly from those presented earlier in the literature. Early intramedullary stabilization, even soon after birth, seems justified in selected patients with severe OI. The possibilities for motor development are improved and later insertion of …

Prenatal diagnosis of perinatally lethal osteogenesis imperfecta.

Prenatal diagnosis of osteogenesis imperfecta was achieved at 17 weeks of gestation using ultrasound through recognition of low echogenic properties of all the bones, abnormally shaped skull, bell-shaped rib cage, distally thinned ribs, short and deformed long bones, wide metaphyses, and thin diaphyses. Severely limited abnormal movements, abnormal positioning of the lower limbs also were typical of the condition. The recognition of the signs reported in this paper will allow the identification of the condition in utero in the second trimester.

Spontaneous carotid-cavernous fistula in osteogenesis imperfecta.

A case of spontaneous carotid-cavernous fistula is presented in a patient suffering from osteogenesis imperfecta tarda type I. The patient was operated on under local anesthesia by intraluminal occlusion of the cavernous carotid artery with a Fogarty catheter, in accordance with Prolo's technique, with total remission except for homolateral loss of vision due to postglaucoma atrophy. the pathogenetic phenomena described in the literature are reviewed, with the suggestion that osteogenesis imperfecta be included with Ehlers-Danlos disease, Marfan's syndrome, and pseudoxanthoma elasticum, as a c…
