Of 47 patients with lumbar disc disease and sciatic radiculopathy (L-5 or S-1), 39 were successfully managed at home and as outpatients in an ambulatory care facility designed for the treatment of arthritis and back pain. When these patients were evaluated one to three years following discharge, they maintained their maximum level of activity and functional improvement noted at discharge. The average total cost per patient including physician's fees, x-rays, laboratory and therapy was approximately equivalent to the day rate for 1(1/2) days in hospital.

Twenty-five patients with ingrowing toenails were treated conservatively by inserting cotton wool under the ingrowing nail edge. Seventy-nine percent were relieved of their symptoms after follow up for a mean of 23.7 weeks. Prescribing patterns were studied in a psychiatric outpatient clinic. Psychiatrists tended to prescribe large quantities of antidepressants or other drugs. In contrast, the daily doses for antidepressants and neuroleptics were often too low. To date, more than 150 patients with osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, pyelonephritis, endocarditis, and other infections have been treated. A review of the literature disclosed many potential complications associated with endotracheal anesthesia. A retrospective review of the records of the general anesthetics administered to 5,223 outpatients receiving nasal endotracheal intubation at the Ohio State University was undertaken. Comparison of culture results with clinical impressions showed that pediatric house officers made frequent errors in diagnosing superficial fungus infections. Results of cultures on dermatophyte test medium (DTM), read by nonmycologists in the clinic, were comparably accurate with those on standard media processed in a laboratory. DTM is a useful aid in diagnosing dermatophytoses and teaching clinical mycology to pediatric residents.

The combination of fentanyl citrate (Sublimaze) and diazepam (Valium) was evaluated for efficacy of analgesia, sedation, and safety in 1,008 predominately outpatient urologic procedures. These procedures included prostate biopsies, basket extractions of ureteral calculi, internal urethrotomies, and cystourethroscopies. A review of the 130 breast biopsies performed on women during the past three years at the Martin Luther King, Jr, General Hospital showed that 90 were performed on outpatients and 40 on inpatients. Of the 90 outpatient procedures, 61 were under local anesthesia and 29 under general. Only three outpatient biopsy specimens were malignant and required subsequent patient admission to the hospital for mastectomy at an interval of 9 to 14 days. In all three, the axillary nodes were uninvolved. In two, no residual tumor was found in the mastectomy specimen.

In a 20-month period, 1,783 children seen in the pediatric outpatient department had blood cultures performed and 117 (6.5%) of these children had bacteremia. The outpatient treatment program for dental extraction in persons with the various forms of hemophilia has been reported. This program was initiated at the Hemophilia Rehabilitation Center at Orthopaedic Hospital in Los Angeles in 1966.
