Plasma free fatty acid turnover in total lipodystrophy.

Basal free fatty acid (FFA) turnover was found to be elevated or at the upper limit of normal in a patient with total lipodystrophy. The decrease in plasma FFA concentration which occurred after intravenous administration of insulin was shown to be primarily due to a fall in the inflow of FFA into the circulation. These results provide support for the suggestion that adipocytes in total lipodystrophy are able to synthesize triglycercide, but that they are unable to store it because of rapid lipolysis.

Fatty Acid Profile and Hazard Index of Ready-to-Eat Foods Available in the Market: A Risk Survey.

BACKGROUND: Dietary fat is of necessary macronutrients for body health. According to the guidelines, up to 10% of calories can be supplied by saturated fat. Moreover, intake of trans fats should be reduced up to zero, if possible. Owing to the increasing share of ready-to-eat foods in the daily basket, we aimed to analyze these types of foods to determine their fatty acid profile, and the hazard indices of atherogenicity and thrombogenicity. METHODS: Four types of industrial and seven types of retail ready-to-eat foods were purchased from local markets. The fatty acid profile was determined u

Black Mulberry Extract Elicits Hepatoprotective Effects in Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Models by Inhibition of Histone Acetylation.

Epigenetic regulation by histone acetyltransferase (HAT) is associated with various biological processes and the progression of diseases, including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The objective of this study was to investigate whether the hypolipidemic properties of black mulberry (Morus atropurpurea Roxb.) fruit extract (BME) contribute toward protection against NAFLD by HAT inhibition. HepG2 cells were treated with oleic and palmitic acids to induce lipid accumulation, which was significantly attenuated by the treatment with BME at 50 and 100 μg/mL. BME also markedly reduced the ex…

Fatty acids in serum and diet--a canonical correlation analysis among toddlers.

Fatty acid concentrations in blood are potential biomarkers of dietary fat intake, but methodological studies among children are scarce. The large number of fatty acids and their complex interrelationships pose a special challenge in research on fatty acids. Our target was to assess the interrelationships between the total fatty acid profiles in diet and serum of young children. The study subjects were healthy control children from the birth cohort of the Type 1 Diabetes Prediction and Prevention Study. A 3-day food record and a frozen serum sample were available from 135 children at the age o

Binding properties of purified adult and fetal bovine serum albumin.

Fetal and adult bovine serum albumin were purified by standard techniques and then treated with activated charcoal at pH 2.75 to remove small molecular weight legands. The two proteins were compared and found to be identical by the following criteria: isoelectric focusing, electrophoresis on cellulose acetate and polyacrylamide gel, by the binding of bromcresol green, salicylic acid, diphenylhydantoin, and six different fatty acids (palmitic, stearic, oleic, elaidic, linoleic, and arachidonic). Reports of marked differences in the capacities of fatal and ault plasma to bind bilirubin and vario

Introduction of Cistanche phelypaea fatty acids as a new natural neurotrophic supplement by evaluating its effects in normal and Alzheimer's diseased rats.

The incidence of the neurodegenerative disease "Alzheimer's"(AD) is expected to reach up to 2.1 billion people aged 60 years old by 2050. Unsaturated fatty acids have been implicated in both protective and detrimental roles in AD. However, there is currently limited understanding of how varying levels of disease pathology in the brain influence the abundance of these fatty acid species. Within this framework, the present study aims to estimate the effect of fatty acids extracted from Cistanche phelypaea (C. phelypaea) on rats' memory and behaviour. The fatty acids (FAs) extracted from the wild

Nutritional composition and action mechanism of Channa striata meat in wound healing: A systematic review.

Wound healing is a complex biological process requiring adequate nutritional support, particularly proteins, amino acids, fatty acids, and essential minerals. Snakehead fish (Channa striata) has been traditionally consumed in Southeast Asia to accelerate recovery after surgery and childbirth. Emerging evidence suggests that its nutritional composition plays a pivotal role in tissue repair. The aim of this systematic review was to consolidate evidence on the nutritional composition of C. striata and elucidate its mechanisms of action in wound healing based on preclinical and clinical studies. A

Dietary nucleotides correct plasma and liver microsomal fatty acid alterations in rats with liver cirrhosis induced by oral intake of thioacetamide.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Dietary nucleotides modulate a number of metabolic processes, including long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid metabolism. In this study, we evaluated the effect of dietary nucleotides on plasma and liver microsomal fatty acid profiles in a rat model of liver cirrhosis induced by oral intake of thioacetamide. METHODS: Fifty-four female Wistar rats were assigned to one of the following groups: rats in the thioacetamide group (n=45) were given 300 mg thioacetamide/l in their drinking water for 4 months, and rats in the control group (n=9) received water during the same period. Dietary alpha‑lipoic acid, sprouted wheat, and multi‑enzyme supplementation improve yolk fatty acid profile and antioxidant status in laying hens.

In a completely randomized trial, we investigated the individual and combined effects of sprouted wheat (SW, 5%), a multi‑enzyme blend (ME; 500 mg/kg), and alpha‑lipoic acid (ALA; 300 mg/kg) on yolk fatty acid composition and cholesterol content, blood biochemical indices, and oxidative‑stress‑related parameters in SuperNick laying hens, using 10 dietary treatments (n = 200; five replicates of four hens each) over a 60‑day period. Experimental diets containing 5% wheat or wheat sprout produced only modest changes in dietary fatty acid composition, with all diets remaining high in polyunsaturat

Interleukin-35 attenuates hepatic lipotoxic stress through AMPK-associated metabolic and antioxidative regulation in NAFLD-like models.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is characterized by dysregulated hepatic lipid metabolism and oxidative stress under chronic metabolic overload. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a central regulator of metabolic and redox homeostasis; however, immune-derived signals that coordinate metabolic adaptation in hepatocytes remain incompletely understood. Interleukin-35 (IL-35) is an immunoregulatory cytokine with emerging metabolic relevance, yet its role in hepatic metabolic reprogramming has not been fully elucidated. Here, we investigated whether IL-35 modulates hepatic lipid metabo

BCL-XL Overexpression Protects Pancreatic β-Cells against Cytokine- and Palmitate-Induced Apoptosis.

Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects glucose metabolism, either by autoimmune-driven β-cell loss or by the progressive loss of β-cell function, due to continued metabolic stresses. Although both α- and β-cells are exposed to the same stressors, such as proinflammatory cytokines and saturated free fatty acids (e.g., palmitate), only α-cells survive. We previously reported that the abundant expression of BCL-XL, an anti-apoptotic member of the BCL-2 family of proteins, is part of the α-cell defense mechanism against palmitate-induced cell death. Here, we investigated whether BCL-XL overexp

The Myxobacterial Metabolite Soraphen A Inhibits HIV-1 by Reducing Virus Production and Altering Virion Composition.

Soraphen A is a myxobacterial metabolite that blocks the acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase of the host and was previously identified as a novel HIV inhibitor. Here, we report that soraphen A acts by reducing virus production and altering the gp120 virion content, impacting entry capacity and infectivity. These effects are partially reversed by addition of palmitic acid, suggesting that inhibition of HIV envelope palmitoylation is one of the mechanisms of antiviral action.

Stimulation of cell-mediated resistance in mice to infection with Listeria monocytogenes by vitamin A.

Vitamin A given as retinol-acetate, retinol-palmitate as well as the derivates retinoic acid and a retinoid, strongly fortified the resistance of mice to infection with virulent cells of Listeria monocytogenes. However, strong enhancement of resistance was only achieved when high toxic doses of vitamin A were given. Apparently, this effect was due to a stimulation of the function of the mononuclear phagocytic system rather than of the T lymphocyte.

Neurosecretory protein GL stimulates feeding behavior and fat accumulation in Japanese quails (Coturnix japonica).

Neurosecretory protein GL (NPGL) is a novel hypothalamic neuropeptide that promotes fat accumulation in rats, mice, and neonatal chicks. However, its role in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of chronic intracerebroventricular infusion of NPGL on body mass, food intake, and fat deposition in five-week-old male Japanese quails. A 13-day infusion of NPGL significantly increased body mass, food intake, and the masses of subcutaneous fat, abdominal fat, and liver. In contrast, water intake and the masses of the pancreas, testes, heart, a

Filament-based 3D-printing of placebo dosage forms using brittle lipid-based excipients.

In order to expand the limited portfolio of available polymer-based excipients for fabricating three-dimensional (3D) printed pharmaceutical products, Lipid-based excipients (LBEs) have yet to be thoroughly investigated. The technical obstacle of LBEs application is, however their crystalline nature that renders them very brittle and challenging for processing via 3D-printing. In this work, we evaluated the functionality of LBEs for filament-based 3D-printing of oral dosage forms. Polyglycerol partial ester of palmitic acid and polyethylene glycols monostearate were selected as LBEs, based on

Effect of retinoids on fetal lung development in the rat.

We investigated the effect of retinoids on fetal lung development in the rat. The concentration of retinyl palmitate increased rapidly to a peak on day 17 of gestation and decreased to a minimum on day 21 of gestation; there was a slight increase after birth. Retinoid acid receptor (RAR)-alpha and -beta mRNA were detected in all samples obtained from perinatal and adult rat lung, and only a trace of RAR-gamma mRNA was detected in the fetuses on days 15, 17 and 19 of gestation and in the adults by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. After a maternal retinol deficiency of 28 days' d

Taste Sensitivity Is Inversely Associated with Body Mass Index (BMI) Independently of Caloric Intake: Evidence from Sensory and Genetic Analyses.

Background/Objectives: Taste perception has emerged as a key determinant of eating behavior and metabolic regulation, but its relationship with body mass index (BMI) remains incompletely understood. We investigated the relationships among global, sweet, and lipid taste sensitivity; sweet- and lipid-taste-related polymorphisms; caloric intake; and BMI. Methods: Taste sensitivity was assessed using taste strips (overall and sweet) and detection thresholds for fatty acids (oleic, linoleic, and palmitic acids). Genotyping of polymorphism genes was conducted. Pearson correlation analyses examined b…

Investigating the potential of NIR spectroscopy for quality assessment of vacuum-packed and unpackaged sliced Iberian ham.

Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is an extremely useful tool for quality control and traceability in the agri-food industry, particularly for high-value products such as 100 % 'black seal' sliced Iberian ham. The aim of this research was to study the feasibility of using NIRS technology to authenticate the quality of vacuum-packed and unpackaged sliced Iberian ham (59 black seal, 62 red seal, 56 green seal and 55 white seal samples), based on the development of predictive NIRS models for determining the fatty acid profile of the product. In this study, we used a bench-top instrument designed

Elemental selenium activates GPX1 to reprogram NK cell lipid metabolism and restores antitumor immunity.

Metabolic rewiring-induced immune dysfunction limits the efficacy of NK cell-based immunotherapy for solid tumors, underscoring the need for targeted metabolic interventions. In this study, we found that NK cells within tumor tissues exhibited lipid accumulation and decreased infiltration across multiple tumor models, including B16F10 melanoma, MC38 colon carcinoma, 4T1 breast cancer, and LLC lung carcinoma. Among the selected common selenium species, including Selenocystine (SeCys2), selenomethionine (SeMet) and selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs), SeNPs were found to effectively reverse abnormal
