Retrospective analysis of the records of a children's hospital shows an increased incidence of Meckel's diverticulum in children born with major malformation of the umbilicus, alimentary tract, nervous system or cardiovascular system in descending order. A consideration of the risks associated with Meckel's diverticulum suggests that elective resection is indicated only for diverticula that are atypical on inspection or palpation.

The timely diagnosis of aortic dissection is notoriously confounded by unreliable symptomatology. We present a previously unreported clinical sign: thoracic pain reproduced by abdominal palpation. Our case illustrates the dependence of traditional clinical features on the anatomical location of an aortic dissection and lends weight to the concept of aortic pain as being a dynamic product of inter-related changes in intraluminal pressure, volume, wall stress and diameter. The clinical sign we describe may be very specific of acute aortic pathology.

In our previous research, we used clinical breast examination models instrumented with direct (normal) force sensors for training and assessment. A weakness of the normal force sensors is the ability to delineate, in detail, all of the performance measures we wish to understand. This study incorporated the use of newly developed shear force sensors to extend a framework for quantifying hands-on performance.

In the course of the examination of a patient their tongue is easily visualized and with the use of gauze can be gently dried, held with gauze and stretched for inspection of all aspects. This can be followed by palpation of both the tongue and the floor of mouth. In this manner, any altered tissue is likely to be detected and, with or without further investigations, a diagnosis established. Appropriate management can then be undertaken. A wide range of conditions may involve the tongue and this article outlines some of these using a classification based on aetiology.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed in 18 male patients with 20 nonpalpable undescended testes and the results were compared with surgical findings.
METHODS: The MRI examination located 13 (65%) of 20 gonads, all found at surgery. Eleven testes were found in the inguinal canal or just proximal to the internal inguinal ring, and two testes were demonstrated above the internal inguinal ring.
