Patterns of lymph node metastasis in 441 patients with sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Due to the rarity of sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma (SNSCC), the distribution patterns of lymph node metastasis (LNM), the relationship between LNM and prognosis, and the optimal treatment of LNM lack sufficient evidence-based support. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the patterns of LNM in SNSCC and evaluate the impact of LNM on prognosis. DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study. METHODS: The medical records of 441 patients with SNSCC between 2009 and 2022 in one institution were retrospectively reviewed. We assessed the incidence, the distribution of LNM, and the relationsh

NK cell lymphoblastic lymphoma in the masticator space: a case of non-Hodgkin lymphoma with challenging maxillofacial manifestation and immunophenotype.

Clinical and pathologic findings in extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) often raise challenging problems in diagnosis. We demonstrate the first established case of lymphoma with precursor natural killer (NK) cell origin in the oral and maxillofacial region. An 81-year-old Japanese man had an enlarged facial mass mainly in the parotid region but hyposensitivity in the affected side of the mental and lingual region, and diagnostic imaging revealed the origin to be in the masticator space and indicated an advanced-stage lymphoma. The tumor cell immunophenotype was CD56(+)CD3(-)CD4(-), with no B…

Periorbital desmoplastic squamous cell carcinoma.

Desmoplasia is the formation of a dense collagenous stroma around a neoplasm. It occurs in a variety of malignancies including squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). While desmoplasia is uncommonly seen in cutaneous SCC, it is an independent risk factor for recurrence and metastasis. We report a case series of desmoplastic SCC in the periorbital region. Seven cases were identified: the median age was 68, four were men. The mean follow-up was 48 months. Two patients (29%) had aggressive local recurrence: one required salvage surgery including orbital exenteration, parotidectomy, and neck dissection to

Amide proton transfer-weighted imaging of the head and neck at 3 T: a feasibility study on healthy human subjects and patients with head and neck cancer.

The aim of this study was to explore the feasibility and repeatability of amide proton transfer-weighted (APTw) MRI for the head and neck on clinical MRI scanners. Six healthy volunteers and four patients with head and neck tumors underwent APTw MRI scanning at 3 T. The APTw signal was quantified by the asymmetric magnetization transfer ratio (MTRasym) at 3.5 ppm. Z spectra of normal tissues in the head and neck (masseter muscle, parotid glands, submandibular glands and thyroid glands) were analyzed in healthy volunteers. Inter-scan repeatability of APTw MRI was evaluated in six healthy volunt

Distribution of intermediate filaments and actin microfilaments in parotid autoimmune sialoadenitis of Sjögren syndrome.

In order to study the importance of myoepithelial cells in the formation of parotid epi-myoepithelial islands of the autoimmune sialoadenitis in Sjögren's syndrome, the distribution of cytoskeletal elements has been investigated by electron and immunofluorescence microscopy. Antibodies to intermediate filament proteins--prekeratins, desmin and vimentin--were used as well as a 'DNase I/anti-DNase I' immunohistochemical procedure to detect actin microfilaments for characterization of myoepithelial cells compared to the other types of parotid epithelial cells. Two types of prekeratin antibodies w

Locally Advanced Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of the Right Submandibular Gland With Tuberculosis: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is an aggressive form of salivary gland cancer that mostly affects the accessory, parotid, and submandibular salivary glands. This tumor is characterized by slower development, perineural invasion, and possible local recurrence in clinical and pathological findings. A male patient, aged 71, who was from a remote area, appeared with a lesion affecting the right submandibular gland and had been experiencing discomfort in the same region for four months. Following a biopsy and the histological confirmation of ACC in the right submandibular gland, the tumor was widel

Kimura's disease: a rare cause of facial mass in a caucasian male patient.

Kimura's disease is an uncommon inflammatory disorder of unclear aetiology, mainly affecting young Asian descent males among their second and fourth decades of life. The disease typically emerges as a long-standing and painless subcutaneous mass lesion in the head and neck region, frequently associated with swelling of major salivary glands, particularly the parotid gland, and regional lymphadenopathy. Peripheral eosinophilia and high serum immunoglobulin E are also characteristic findings. We report a case and describe the imaging and pathological features of the disease in a 19-year-old Cauc

Masseter muscle hypertrophy: case report.

Masseter muscle hypertrophy is characterized by unilateral or bilateral enlargement of the masseter muscles affecting both males and females after puberty. Its etiology remains unknown. Limitations on mouth opening and also tension in the region of the hypertrophied muscle are symptoms reported. This paper reports a case of masseter muscle hypertrophy diagnosed using imaging modalities such as conventional radiography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scans. The familiarity with this condition is important to settle the differential diagnosis with other pathologies such as pa

Mesotympanic sarcoidosis.

Sarcoidosis often presents with signs and symptoms within the head and neck. In this region, it most commonly affects the nose, larynx, parotid and cervical lymph nodes. Within the ear, it usually causes sensorineural hearing loss of varying severity. We report a patient in whom sarcoidosis involved the middle ear and presented with a conductive hearing loss. Granulomata were found in the middle ear during an exploratory tympanotomy. The granulomatous process had caused necrosis of the long process of incus and was also encasing the chorda tympani nerve. Histological examination confirmed the

Epithelial-Myoepithelial Carcinoma of the Salivary Gland Harboring HRAS Codon 61 Mutations With Lung Metastasis.

Here, we report a case involving a 43-year-old man diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma in 2007. At the same time, 2 small lung nodules were incidentally found; however, they presented no indication of growth throughout the follow-up period. However, a 1.5-cm nodule located in the right parotid gland in 2010 gradually increased in size to 2.8 cm by 2012. A parotidectomy revealed an epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma, characterized by biphasic tubular structures and solid areas presenting myoepithelial overgrowth. Tumor necrosis and regional lymph node invasion were also observed. During clinical fo

Computer aided diagnosis of parotid gland lesions using ultrasonic multi-feature tissue characterization.

In this article, an ultrasound based system for computer aided characterization of biologic tissue and its application to differential diagnosis of parotid gland lesions is proposed. Aiming at an automated differentiation between malignant and benign cases, the system is based on a supervised classification using tissue-describing features derived from ultrasound radio-frequency (RF) echo signals and image data. Standard diagnostic ultrasound equipment was employed to acquire ultrasound RF echo data from parotid glands of 138 patients. Lesions were manually demarcated as regions-of-interest (R
