Burnt sugarcane harvesting: particulate matter exposure and the effects on lung function, oxidative stress, and urinary 1-hydroxypyrene.

Non-mechanised sugarcane harvesting preceded by burning exposes workers and the people of neighbouring towns to high concentrations of pollutants. This study was aimed to evaluate the respiratory symptoms, lung function and oxidative stress markers in sugarcane workers and the residents of Mendonça, an agricultural town in Brazil, during the non-harvesting and harvesting periods and to assess the population and individual exposures to fine particulate matter (PM(2.5)). Sugarcane workers and healthy volunteers were evaluated with two respiratory symptom questionnaires, spirometry, urinary 1-hyd…

Urban particulate matter air pollution is associated with subclinical atherosclerosis: results from the HNR (Heinz Nixdorf Recall) study.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the association of long-term residential exposure to fine particles with carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT). BACKGROUND: Experimental and epidemiological evidence suggest that long-term exposure to air pollution might have a causal role in atherogenesis, but epidemiological findings are still inconsistent. We investigate whether urban particulate matter (PM) air pollution is associated with CIMT, a marker of subclinical atherosclerosis. METHODS: We used baseline data (2000 to 2003) from the HNR (Heinz Nixdorf Recall) study, a population…

Associations between personal, indoor, and residential outdoor pollutant concentrations: implications for exposure assessment to size-fractionated particulate matter.

The physical and chemical characteristics of indoor, outdoor, and personal quasi-ultrafine (<0.25 microm)-, accumulation (0.25-2.5 microm)-, and coarse (2.5-10 microm)-mode particles were studied at four different retirement communities in southern California between 2005 and 2007. Linear mixed-effects models and Spearman's correlation coefficients were then used to elucidate the relationships among size-segregated particulate matter (PM) levels, their particle components, and gaseous co-pollutants. Seasonal and spatial differences in the concentrations of all measured species were evaluated a…

Street-level concentrations of suspended particulate matter (SPM), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and sulphur dioxide (SO2) in Pune City.

The concentration of suspended particulate matter (SPM), nitrogen dioxide (NO,) and sulphur dioxide (SO2) were measured at 13 important traffic intersections in Pune city. In order to study the contribution of these pollutants from motor vehicles, attention was focused on the roadside, street-level concentration. The statistical analysis of the sampling results indicates that there is not only high correlation between SPM and NO2 but the levels of these pollutants are above the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) laid down by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), India. The SO…

Long-term particulate matter exposure and coronary inflammation: A large-scale cohort study assessed by pericoronary fat attenuation index.

Particulate matter (PM) is known to accelerate atherosclerosis through systemic inflammation, yet its specific impact on local coronary inflammation remains poorly understood. This large-scale retrospective cohort study investigated the long-term effects of PM exposure on coronary inflammation as assessed by the pericoronary fat attenuation index (FAI). We analyzed 5528 participants undergoing coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA), including a longitudinal subcohort of 656 individuals with serial scans. FAI values for the left anterior descending, left circumflex, and right coronary …

Associations between monthly fine particulate matter and ozone exposure, and postneonatal infant mortality in the United States, 2005-2017.

Using NCHS birth and death records, we estimated associations between monthly mean fine particulate matter (PM2.5) or ozone (O3) concentrations during the postneonatal period (29-364 days) and postneonatal infant mortality (IM) among infants born between 2005 and 2017 in United States (U.S.) counties with >250,000 residents. Air quality data were derived from the U.S. EPA's EQUATES project, which fuses multi-year CMAQv5.3.2 model outputs with monitor measurements, spatially weighted to each county, and linked to birth and death records. We estimated incidence rate ratios and 95% confidence int…

Acute co-exposure to urban particulate matter and aircraft noise elicits lung-centered immune-redox proteomic remodeling in mice.

Particulate air pollution and transportation noise frequently co-occur, but their combined molecular effects are poorly defined. We used data-independent acquisition (DIA) LC-MS/MS proteomics to profile lung, brain, and heart from male C57BL/6J mice exposed for 3 days to NIST SRM 1648a urban particulate matter (PM), aircraft noise (NOISE), PM + NOISE, or control conditions. The exposure model is the acute co-exposure paradigm previously characterised with orthogonal functional, redox, and inflammatory endpoints by Kuntic et al. The lung was the dominant responsive organ. PM + NOISE produced th…

Wildfire-Season Fine Particulate Matter Exposure and Associations with Influenza and Influenza-like-Illness Risk in the Western USA.

BACKGROUND: Influenza remains a significant public health threat with pandemic potential. Understanding environmental factors influencing virus spread and severity is critical, particularly as wildfires become more frequent and intense. While temperature and humidity's roles in virus seasonality and persistence are well understood, the impacts of air pollution ─ especially wildfire-specific particulate matter (PM2.5) ─ on respiratory infections are less explored. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the association between wildfire PM2.5 exposure and influenza or influenza-like illness…

Chemical and cell toxicity properties of particulate matter emitted from a diesel engine fueled with biodiesel and ethanol blends.

This study investigates the impact of renewable fuels, specifically three types of biodiesels along with ethanol on the chemical and cell toxicity properties of particulate matter (PM) released from a diesel engine compared to pure diesel. By blending 10 % (by volume) of grape seed biodiesel, spent coffee biodiesel, and eucalyptus oil with diesel, three biodiesel blends (DGs10, DC10, and DEu10, respectively) are produced and subsequently tested. Additionally, an ethanol blend comprising 9 % ethanol and 1 % biodiesel (used as a stabilizer for the blend) is evaluated. The PM compositions from th…

Fine particulate matter from burning oil and gas and associated neurological symptoms among Deepwater Horizon oil spill cleanup workers.

Burning and flaring of oil and gas following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill generated high airborne concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5). Neurological effects of PM2.5 have been previously reported, but this relationship has received limited attention in the context of oil spills. We evaluated associations between burning-related PM2.5 and prevalence of self-reported neurological symptoms during, and 1-3 years after, the DWH disaster cleanup. For 9914 DWH disaster responders in the Gulf Long-term Follow-up Study who worked on the water, we examined aggregate outcomes (…

Antibiotics in ambient fine particulate matter from two metropolitan cities in China: Characterization, source apportionment, and health risk assessment.

Excessive production and widespread application of antibiotic has led to residues in environmental matrices worldwide. There is limited knowledge of the concentrations of antibiotics bound to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and their health risks. We investigated the occurrence, sources, environmental driving factors, and health risks of antibiotics in PM2.5 samples collected from Beijing and Shijiazhuang, China, during periods of high air pollution. Using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, 25 antibiotics were detected in PM2.5 at concentrations rang…

Characterization and source apportionment of particulate matter and CO2 in Chinese subway stations with varying platform screen door forms.

With the vigorous development of subway systems, particulate matter (PM) and CO2 in subway stations is raising increasing concerns. Here, the characterization of PM and CO2 at seven subway stations with different forms of platform doors in China are studied. The results show that PM concentrations at platforms are higher than those at halls, followed by the outside. CO2 concentrations at platforms are remarkably correlated linearly with passenger number. Subsequently, impacts of piston effect on PM and CO2 concentrations at platforms are assessed. The maximum PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations with…

A Modified QuEChERS-HPLC Method for Detection of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Zebrafish Embryos Exposed to Fine Particulate Matter.

Maternal exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5), with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 µm or less, has been linked to spontaneous abortion and various congenital diseases in humans. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Zebrafish embryos are widely used to study the developmental toxicity of PM2.5 but measuring the internal levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the primary toxic constituents of PM2.5, poses a challenge. In this study, we developed a Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe High-performance Liquid Chromatography (QuEChERS-HPLC) method to asse…

Biocompatible Metal-Organic Framework-Based Fabric Composite as an Efficient Personal Protective Equipment for Particulate Matter-Induced Pulmonary Injury.

Efficient personal protection has emerged as a crucial approach for reducing pulmonary injury induced by particulate matter (PM). However, current personal protective equipments usually lack essential biosafety concerns and fail to own adsorbing/antioxidant/antibacterial function together, making it a challenge to develop an integrated platform with the above characteristics. Herein, a facile oxygen-free hydrothermal strategy is proposed to synthesize new copper-based metal-organic frameworks, Cu-HHTPs, (HHTP: 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene), with great adsorbing/antioxidant/antibacteri…

Study on the phase transformation mechanism and influencing factors of inorganic condensable particulate matter from coal-fired power plants.

In this study, the concentration of inorganic ions (SO42-, NH4+, NO3- and NO2-) and morphological characteristics of condensable particulate matter (CPM) were investigated to elucidate the formation mechanism of inorganic CPM from ultra-low emission coal-fired power plants. The concentration of inorganic ions increased with the increase of H2O content and concentration of inorganic gaseous contaminants (SO2, NOX and NH3), and decrease of condensation temperature, indicating the enhancement of heterogenous reaction in the saturated flue gas. Furthermore, NOX and SO2 could undergo redox reaction…

Personal exposure monitoring of fine and coarse particulate matter using exposure assessment models for elderly residents in Hong Kong.

This study investigated the determinants of personal exposures (PE) to coarse (PM2.5-10) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) for elderly communities in Hong Kong. The mean PE PM2.5 and PM2.5-10 were 23.6 ± 10.8 and 13.5 ± 22.1 μg/m3, respectively during the sampling period. Approximately 76% of study subjects presented statistically significant differences between PE and ambient origin for PM2.5 compared to approximately 56% for PM2.5-10, possibly due to the coarse-size particles being more influenced by similar sources (road dust and construction dust emissions) compared to the PM2.5 particle…

IL-23 contributes to Particulate Matter induced allergic asthma in the early life of mice and promotes asthma susceptibility.

Air pollutant exposure leads to and exacerbates respiratory diseases. Particulate Matter (PM) is a major deleterious factor in the pathophysiology of asthma. Nonetheless, studies on the effects and mechanisms of exposure in the early life of mice remain unresolved. This study aimed to investigate changes in allergic phenotypes and effects on allergen-specific memory T cells resulting from co-exposure of mice in the early life to PM and house dust mites (HDM) and to explore the role of interleukin-23 (IL-23) in this process. PM and low-dose HDM were administered intranasally in 4-day-old C57BL/…

Protocatechuic Acid and Syringin from Saussurea neoserrata Nakai Attenuate Prostaglandin Production in Human Keratinocytes Exposed to Airborne Particulate Matter.

Saussurea neoserrata Nakai offers a reliable and efficient source of antioxidants that can help alleviate adverse skin reactions triggered by air pollutants. Air pollutants, such as particulate matter (PM), have the ability to infiltrate the skin and contribute to the higher occurrence of cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and respiratory ailments. Individuals with compromised skin barriers are particularly susceptible to the impact of PM since it can be absorbed more readily through the skin. This study investigated the impact of protocatechuic acid and syringin, obtained from the n-BuOH extrac…
