An abattoir survey of the incidence of pneumonia in Saskatchewan swine and an investigation of the microbiology of affected lungs.

The lungs of 15 409 pigs, mostly from Saskatchewan, slaughtered at an abattoir were examined over a one year period. The incidence of lesions was 36.7% for "enzootic" pneumonia and 2.1% for pleurisy unassociated with pneumonia. Seasonal variations were recorded and compared with the results of similar surveys carried out in Australia, Belgium and England. Mycoplasmological examination of lungs from 347 animals was consistently negative for Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae. Pasteurella multocida was the commonest bacterial isolate, a result which agrees with those of other workers.

Long-term study of aerobic bacteria of the genital tract in breeding bitches.

The aerobic bacterial flora of the genital tract was characterized in 59 bitches in an 18-month study. The bitches represented 4 breeds and … reproductive functions. Pregnancy rates, litter sizes, and pup mortality were within normal limits. Pasteurella multocida, beta-hemolytic streptococci group G, and Escherichia coli were the most common bacteria isolated. Although these species generally were isolated from mixed cultures, pure cultures were obtained from 18% of the specimens. There was a tendency for th …

Development of pneumonia in desert bighorn sheep after exposure to a flock of exotic wild and domestic sheep.

From 1986 to 1989, 5 desert bighorn sheep (3 Ovis canadensis mexicana and 2 O c nelsoni), ranging in age from 2 to 3 years, were exposed to a flock of exotic wild and domestic sheep to potentially achieve naturally acquired pneumonia. Pasteurella multocida was isolated from nasal samples from 4 of 6 sheep randomly sampled from the flock. Bighorn sheep were exposed individually and each exposure period was a trial. Treatment before and after exposure varied and included combinations of alpha interferon, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, and vaccines. Treatments were chosen on the basis of r…

A characterization of monoclonal antibodies prepared against Pasteurella haemolytica serotype 1 surface antigens.

The production and characterization of monoclonal antibodies against Pasteurella haemolytica serotype 1 is described. Ten monoclonal antibodies were produced and divided, on the basis of their properties, into six different groups. One produced bacteria agglutination only of P. haemolytica serotype 1. Three antibodies bound with P. haemolytica serotypes 1, 5-8 and 12 and the antigen was identified in immunoblots as lipopolysaccharide. Two antibodies bound P. haemolytica serotypes 1, 2, 5-8 and 12 and P. multocida serotypes 1-7, 9, 12, 15 and 16, recognizing an epitope present on a 29 kDa outer

Development and application of a WebGIS-based prediction system for multi-criteria decision analysis of porcine pasteurellosis.

Porcine pasteurellosis is an infectious disease caused by Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida), which seriously endangers the healthy development of pig breeding industry. Early detection of disease transmission in animals is a crucial early warning for humans. Therefore, predicting risk areas for disease is essential for public health authorities to adopt preventive measures and control strategies against diseases. In this study, we developed a predictive model based on multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) and assessed risk areas for porcine pasteurellosis in the Chinese mainland. By using…

[Pasteurellosis breast implant infection: A case report and literature review].

Breast implant infection is a potential complication after surgery. This case reports an unusual infection. A patient undergoes a skin sparing mastectomy for a carcinoma with an immediate breast implant reconstruction. Few days after, she consults for pain, erythema and fluctuating breast collection. The implant is removed and a lavage is done. Bacteriological cultures yield Pasteurella Multocida. She has close contact with cats. Her cat scratches a drain. It looks crucial to educate patients before they go back home. Correct postoperative cares and avoid pets are important to prevent complica…

Subcutaneous emphysema, pneumoperitoneum, and pneumoretroperitoneum after gastrostomy tube placement in a cat.

A 17-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat developed subcutaneous emphysema, pneumoperitoneum, and pneumoretroperitoneum during endoscopic placement of a gastrostomy feeding tube after gastric insufflation and cannula insertion. The cat underwent exploratory laparotomy to investigate the possibility of gastric rupture but only a 2- to 3-mm defect was found in the gastric fundus at the site of cannula insertion. Pasteurella multocida and Enterobacter spp were cultured aerobically from the peritoneal cavity. The cat recovered without complications.

Cross-protection conferred by immunization with an rOmpH-based intranasal fowl cholera vaccine.

A previous study demonstrated that a recombinant outer membrane protein H (rOmpH)-based intranasal fowl cholera vaccine elicited efficient homologous protection against the Pasteurella multocida strain X-73 (A:1) in chickens. The present study aimed to determine the cross-protectivity against heterologous P. multocida strains. The rOmpH was purified via electroelution and formulated with two kinds of adjuvants. The vaccine formulations in a total volume of 100 µl were 100 µg rOmpH with 3 µg of Escherichia coli enterotoxin B or 10 µg of CpG ODN2007. Chickens were assigned to three experimental …

Prevalence of respiratory bacterial pathogens and associated management factors in dairy calves in Taiwan.

This study aimed to investigate the prevalence at both farm-level and calf-level and to identify the risk factors of respiratory bacterial pathogens in dairy calves in Taiwan. The status of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) was evaluated by using the Wisconsin scoring system from a total of 400 pre-weaned calves from 32 different farms in Taiwan, then the nasopharyngeal swabs were collected. The prevalence of respiratory pathogens was 84.37% at farm-level and 45.50% at calf-level, and Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) was the most prevalent pathogen. The presence of Mycoplasma bovis (M. bovi…

Bite-related and septic syndromes caused by cats and dogs.

Bite infections can contain a mix of anaerobes and aerobes from the patient's skin and the animal's oral cavity, including species of Pasteurella, Streptococcus, Fusobacterium, and Capnocytophaga. Domestic cat and dog bite wounds can produce substantial morbidity and often require specialised care techniques and specific antibiotic therapy. Bite wounds can be complicated by sepsis. Disseminated infections, particularly those caused by Capnocytophaga canimorsus and Pasteurella multocida, can lead to septic shock, meningitis, endocarditis, and other severe sequelae. An emerging syndrome in veter…

Herd immunity drives the epidemic fadeout of avian cholera in Arctic-nesting seabirds.

Avian cholera, caused by the bacterium Pasteurella multocida, is a common and important infectious disease of wild birds in North America. Between 2005 and 2012, avian cholera caused annual mortality of widely varying magnitudes in Northern common eiders (Somateria mollissima borealis) breeding at the largest colony in the Canadian Arctic, Mitivik Island, Nunavut. Although herd immunity, in which a large proportion of the population acquires immunity to the disease, has been suggested to play a role in epidemic fadeout, immunological studies exploring this hypothesis have been missing. We inve…

[Beware of cat bites].

An 81-year-old male, anticoagulated for atrial fibrillation, presented with a cat bite on his left hand. Despite initial prophylactic antibiotic treatment, the patient developed a flexor sheath infection of the hand. Surgical debridement was necessary and confirmed Pasteurella multocida infection. He was treated with intravenous amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, followed by oral therapy for two weeks. The patient recovered fully, with normal hand function at 12 months. This case underscores the importance of early intervention in cat bites, as they carry a high risk of infection.

Clindamycin-Induced Dermatitis and the Sparing Phenomenon: A Case Report.

Drug-induced dermatitis is a type IV, T-cell-mediated, hypersensitivity reaction characterized by the development of a rash in response to drug exposure. The sparing phenomenon, where drug-induced rash spares areas of recent skin disease, is a recognized but relatively rare clinical observation. In this report, a 62-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with drug-induced dermatitis secondary to clindamycin that spared a recent site of Pasteurella multocida cellulitis. This case visually highlights the complex interplay between T-cell activation and the local immune environment.

In vivo activity of orally administered antibiotics and chemotherapeutics against acute septicaemic pasteurellosis in rabbits.

Different antibiotics and chemotherapeutics were tested for therapeutic efficacy in rabbits, in an experimental model using a Pasteurella multocida strain which causes hyperacute septicaemia in this animal species. Only enrofloxacin, administered in the drinking water at a concentration of 50-100 mg/l cured the rabbits, provided that a daily intake of 5 mg/kg body weight was achieved. The other drugs tested (tetracycline, spiramycin, erythromycin and a combination of sulfamerazine with trimethoprim), at doses recommended for rabbits, showed little or no activity at all, with the exception of c…

Isolation of pathogens other than Yersinia pestis during plague investigations.

From 1975 to 1978, 37 isolates of Pasteurella multocida, 1 of Salmonella enteriditis, and 5 of Francisella tularensis were recovered from 42 mammalian specimens and 1 flea pool submitted for examination for evidence of infection with Yersinia pestis. Most of the specimens were collected during investigations of either a human plague infection or a reported epizootic among rodent populations. All specimens were of species regularly or occasionally involved in plague or tularemia cycles in nature and most were collected in areas of known plague or tularemia activity.
