Research Review: Developmental origins of depression - a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Many observational studies have found a direct association between adverse in utero, perinatal and postnatal exposures and offspring's depression. These findings are consistent with the 'developmental origins of disease hypothesis'. But no review has comprehensively summarized the roles of these exposures. This review aims to systematically scrutinize the strength of associations between individual prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal exposures and subsequent depression in offspring. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to synthesize the literature from the EM

Epidemiology of cardiovascular malformations: prevalence and risk factors.

Epidemiological approaches to the study of cardiovascular malformations (CVMs) face challenges of disease definition, nomenclature, changing diagnostic methodologies, the rarity of the disease in the general population, and the incorporation of current knowledge on genetics and morphogenesis into designing studies to investigate risk factors and implement preventive strategies. Previous studies, especially the population-based Baltimore-Washington Infant Study, have documented variability in the prevalence of specific types of CVM by time, place, and personal characteristics and have highlight

Parental problem drinking and anxiety disorder symptoms in adult offspring: examining the mediating role of anxiety sensitivity components.

Preliminary studies have implicated childhood exposure to parental problem drinking as a possible factor in the development of anxiety sensitivity (AS). The present retrospective study was designed to examine the role of exposure to distressing parental problem drinking behaviors, over and above the role of parental alcoholism, in the development of various AS components (psychological, physical, and social concerns) in the offspring. We also examined the possible mediating role of AS components in explaining relations between parental drinking problems and anxiety-related symptoms in the adul

Reproductive and developmental toxicology of nitrosamines.

With the development of science and technology and the acceleration of industrialization, environmental pollution is becoming more and more serious, and the global fertility rate is decreasing every year, which makes people pay more attention to reproductive health. Nitrosamines are a kind of easy to contact food pollutants, widely exist in pickled food (10.2-14.8 mg/kg) and contaminated water sources (10-150 ng/L), etc. They have been confirmed to be carcinogenic, but the reproductive and developmental toxic effects of nitrosamines have not been systematically reported. Based on relevant rese

Maternal atopic disease modifies effects of prenatal risk factors on exhaled nitric oxide in infants.

In a prospective healthy birth cohort, we determined whether levels of exhaled nitric oxide (eNO) in healthy unselected infants at the age of 1 month were associated with maternal atopic disease and prenatal and early postnatal environmental exposures. Tidal eNO was measured in 98 healthy, unsedated infants (35 from mothers with atopy) (mean age +/- SD, 36.0 +/- 6.2 days) and was compared with histories taken in standardized interviews. eNO was higher in males compared with females (17.7 vs. 14.6 ppb, p = 0.042) and infants exposed to postnatal maternal smoking (+4.4 ppb, p = 0.027), adjusting

Prepubertal exposure to SARS-CoV-2 single-stranded RNA disrupts spermatogenesis and causes intergenerational effects in mice.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused widespread morbidity and mortality worldwide, with emerging evidence documenting transient reproductive impairment in adult males following SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, prepubertal males appear especially vulnerable to infection-related testicular injury, yet the underlying mechanisms and long-term consequences remain poorly understood. We investigated the impact of systemic exposure to synthetic SARS-CoV-2 guanine-uracil (GU)-rich single-stranded RNA (ssRNA), a viral pathogen-associated molecular pattern (PAMP), on testicular integrity and reproductive outco

Dietary folate supplementation modifies effects of arsenic exposure on DNA methylation profiles in sperm of mice expressing the human AS3MT.

Folate is an essential nutrient that supports the formation of S-adenosyl methionine (SAM) in the pathway of one carbon metabolism. Dietary folate intake has been shown to affect the SAM-dependent methylation of diverse substrates, including DNA and inorganic arsenic (iAs). The methylation of iAs by arsenic methyltransferase (AS3MT) plays a key role iAs detoxification in both humans and mice. Our recent studies using wild-type C57BL/6N mice showed that preconception exposure to iAs resulted in heritable changes in DNA methylation in paternal sperm and differential expression of genes in tissue

Is Hypospadias Associated with Prenatal Exposure to Endocrine Disruptors? A French Collaborative Controlled Study of a Cohort of 300 Consecutive Children Without Genetic Defect.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have focused on the association between endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and hypospadias. Phenotype variability, the absence of representative comparison groups and concomitant genetic testing prevent any definitive conclusions. OBJECTIVE: To identify the role of occupational and environmental exposures to EDCs in nongenetic isolated hypospadias. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A total of 408 consecutive children with isolated hypospadias and 302 normal boys were prospectively included (2009-2014) in a multi-institutional study in the south of France, the

Prenatal exposure to nitrate from drinking water and the risk of preterm birth: A Danish nationwide cohort study.

UNLABELLED: Evidence is emerging that preterm birth (PTB, birth before 37 completed weeks of gestation), a risk factor for neonatal mortality and future morbidity, may be induced by maternal nitrate ( N O 3 - ) exposure from drinking water. The objective of this study is to assess the association between maternal exposure to nitrate and the risk of PTB in a nationwide study of liveborn singletons. METHODS: We estimated maternal nitrate exposure from household tap water for 1,055,584 births in Denmark to Danish-born parents during 1991-2015 by linkage of individual home address(es) with n

Maternal exposure to arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury and neural tube defects in offspring.

Arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury are neurotoxins, and some studies suggest that these elements might also be teratogens. Using a case-control study design, we investigated the relation between exposure to these heavy metals and neural tube defects (NTDs) in offspring of Mexican-American women living in 1 of the 14 Texas counties bordering Mexico. A total of 184 case-women with NTD-affected pregnancies and 225 control-women with normal live births were interviewed about their environmental and occupational exposures during the periconceptional period. Biologic samples for blood lead and urin

Mercury levels in chicks of a long-lived seabird - parental effects and links with growth and survival.

Environmental mercury levels continue to rise, leading to increased exposure, especially in long-lived species at high trophic positions, such as many seabirds. During breeding, female seabirds can transfer mercury to their eggs, exposing their offspring to its harmful effects. After hatching, dietary exposure may further compound the risk, although excretion pathways exist as well. Despite extensive research, the relative contributions of maternal transfer, dietary exposure, and excretion to mercury dynamics in chicks, as well as its impacts on growth and survival, remain poorly understood. Exposure to childhood abuse is associated with human sperm DNA methylation.

Offspring of persons exposed to childhood abuse are at higher risk of neurodevelopmental and physical health disparities across the life course. Animal experiments have indicated that paternal environmental stressors can affect sperm DNA methylation and gene expression in an offspring. Childhood abuse has been associated with epigenetic marks in human blood, saliva, and brain tissue, with statistically significant methylation differences ranging widely. However, no studies have examined the association of childhood abuse with DNA methylation in gametes. We examined the association of childhood

Social deficits in mice prenatally exposed to valproic acid are intergenerationally inherited and rescued by social enrichment.

Intergenerational transmission of the effects of environmental factors on brain function and behavior can occur through epigenetic mechanisms. Valproic acid (VPA) is an anticonvulsant drug that, when administered during pregnancy, causes various birth defects. The mechanisms of action are largely unclear: VPA can reduce neuronal excitability, but it also inhibits the histone deacetylases, affecting gene expression. Here we evaluated whether the effects of valproic acid prenatal exposure on autism spectrum disorder (ASD)-related behavioral phenotypes can be transmitted to the second generation

Transgenerational epigenetic and transcriptomic effects of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin exposure in rat.

In rats, direct exposure to TCDD causes myriad toxicities. Exposed rats experience hepatotoxicity, wasting syndrome and immune suppression, amongst others. "Inherited exposure", as occurs in the F3 generation of directly exposed F0 animals, has also been shown to cause toxicity: both male and female F3 rats demonstrate an increased incidence of adult onset disease, females also display reproductive abnormalities and increased incidence of ovarian diseases while males show increased incidence of kidney disease and an altered sperm epigenome. Here, we explore the hepatic transcriptomic profile o
