Readmission following both cardiac and non-cardiac acute dyspnoea is associated with a striking risk of death.

AIMS: Readmission and mortality are the most common and often combined endpoints in acute heart failure (AHF) trials, but an association between these two outcomes is poorly investigated. The aim of this study was to determine whether unplanned readmission is associated with a greater subsequent risk of death in patients with acute dyspnoea due to cardiac and non-cardiac causes. METHODS AND RESULTS: Derivation cohort (1371 patients from the LEDA study) and validation cohort (1986 patients from the BASEL V study) included acute dyspnoea patients admitted to the emergency department. Cox regres

Multidisciplinary initiative to reduce 30-day readmissions in heart failure: a quality improvement perspective.

AIM: Hospitalisation for heart failure (HF) carries a high risk of readmission and adverse patient outcomes. We noticed a higher rate of readmissions for HF patients in a tertiary cardiac centre in Doha, Qatar. This study is focused on using a multidisciplinary and quality improvement approach to reduce the HF patients' 30-day readmission rate to the high dependency unit C in Heart Hospital, Doha, Qatar, by 10% by December 2020 and 20% by December 2021. METHODS: In collaboration with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, we worked on this initiative as a multidisciplinary team and tested

Comparative safety of same-day discharge with remote monitoring after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy vs Roux-en-Y gastric bypass: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery, primarily laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) and laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB), is an effective treatment for obesity. As the demand for healthcare increases, same-day discharge (SDD) supported by remote monitoring (RM) is being explored to optimize resources without compromising safety. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the safety and clinical outcomes of SDD with RM for primary bariatric surgery. METHODS: Following PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines and PROSPERO reg

Outpatient Transarterial Chemoembolization of Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Review of a Same-Day Discharge Strategy.

PURPOSE: To test the hypothesis that same-day discharge of selected transarterial chemoembolization patients would not increase 30-day readmission rate compared with overnight observation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: With institutional review board approval, 193 hepatocellular carcinoma patients who underwent transarterial chemoembolization from July 2013 to June 2016 were reviewed. Treatment was conventional/lipiodol transarterial chemoembolization with 50 mg doxorubicin/10 mg mitomycin-c/particles or drug-eluting embolics transarterial chemoembolization with 50-75 mg doxorubicin/vial. Readmissions Among Sepsis Survivors: Risk Factors and Prevention.

Hospital readmissions are common and result in increased mortality and cost while reducing quality of life. Readmission rates have been subjected to increasing scrutiny in recent years as part of a larger effort to improve the quality and value of healthcare in the United States. Emerging evidence suggests that sepsis survivors are at high risk for hospital readmission and experience readmission rates comparable to survivors of congestive heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, pneumonia, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diseases whose readmission rates determine reimbursement pe
