What lies beneath: a comparison of reading aloud in pure alexia and semantic dementia.

Exaggerated effects of word length upon reading-aloud performance define pure alexia, but have also been observed in semantic dementia. Some researchers have proposed a reading-specific account, whereby performance in these two disorders reflects the same cause: impaired orthographic processing. In contrast, according to the primary systems view of acquired reading disorders, pure alexia results from a basic visual processing deficit, whereas degraded semantic knowledge undermines reading performance in semantic dementia. To explore the source of reading deficits in these two disorders, we com

Adults with dyslexia demonstrate large effects of crowding and detrimental effects of distractors in a visual tilt discrimination task.

Previous research has shown that adults with dyslexia (AwD) are disproportionately impacted by close spacing of stimuli and increased numbers of distractors in a visual search task compared to controls [1]. Using an orientation discrimination task, the present study extended these findings to show that even in conditions where target search was not required: (i) AwD had detrimental effects of both crowding and increased numbers of distractors; (ii) AwD had more pronounced difficulty with distractor exclusion in the left visual field and (iii) measures of crowding and distractor exclusion corre

Attentional blink deficits observed in dyslexia depend on task demands.

The attentional blink (AB) refers to a deficit in the ability to identify a second target following a first target when both appear randomly within a rapid sequence of distractor items. The AB of five adults with dyslexia (ADys) was compared with that of a group of normal adult readers. Two tasks were completed which differed in the conceptual category of the target items (a red digit or letter) relative to the distractor items (all black digits). In the digit condition, all ADys cases showed a longer AB compared to the control group. In the letter condition, all participants showed improvemen

Beyond retinotopic mapping: the spatial representation of objects in the human lateral occipital complex.

The spatial representation in the human ventral object-related areas (i.e., the lateral occipital complex [LOC]) is currently unknown. It seems plausible, however, that it would diverge from the strict retinotopic mapping (characteristic of V1) to a more invariant coordinate frame, thereby allowing for reliable object recognition in the face of eye, head, or body movement. To study this, we compared the fMRI activation in LOC when object displacement was limited to either the retina or the screen by manipulating eye position and object locations. We found clear adaptation in LOC when the objec

When phonology fails: orthographic neighbourhood effects in dyslexia.

Both cerebral hemispheres contain phonological, orthographic and semantic representations of words, however there are between-hemisphere differences in the relative engagement and specialization of the different representations. Taking orthographic processing for example, previous studies suggest that orthographic neighbourhood size (N) has facilitatory effects in the right but not the left hemispheres. To pursue the nature of this asymmetric N effect, in particular whether there are individual differences in such specialisation, we examined N in a case of developmental dyslexia, FM. We first

Human perceptual learning in the peripheral visual field: sensory thresholds and neurophysiological correlates.

Perceptual learning in the peripheral visual field was studied in 24 adults using vernier targets. The aim was to relate perceptual improvements to changes of electrical brain activity. Thresholds were measured before, during, and after training, and on the next day. During training, the subjects passively looked at suprathreshold targets, and EEG activity was recorded from 30 electrodes over the occipital brain areas. Mean evoked potentials were computed for the first and second block of 1200 stimulus presentations, and the scalp topography of visual evoked potential (VEP) activity was analys

Control of goal-directed and stimulus-driven attention in the brain.

We review evidence for partially segregated networks of brain areas that carry out different attentional functions. One system, which includes parts of the intraparietal cortex and superior frontal cortex, is involved in preparing and applying goal-directed (top-down) selection for stimuli and responses. This system is also modulated by the detection of stimuli. The other system, which includes the temporoparietal cortex and inferior frontal cortex, and is largely lateralized to the right hemisphere, is not involved in top-down selection. Instead, this system is specialized for the detection o

Temporal profile of visual evoked responses to pattern-reversal stimulation analyzed with a whole-head magnetometer.

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) has become accepted as a useful method for non-invasively studying brain functions, including visual perception. The present study used MEG to elucidate information processing following pattern-reversal stimulation by analyzing the origins and properties of visual evoked magnetic fields (VEFs). The VEFs of ten healthy adults were recorded in a magnetically shielded room using a 122-channel whole-head magnetometer. The visual stimulation of checkerboard-pattern reversal at 1.7 Hz was presented to the subject's right hemifield. Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) were re

What processing is impaired in apperceptive agnosia? Evidence from normal subjects.

Visual agnosia is a neuropsychological syndrome characterized by a failure of object identification. Apperceptive agnosia, an object identification deficit caused by damage to early perceptual processes, has been explained by appealing to both damaged early sensory processes and to damaged preattentive grouping processes. Which of these two explanations best accounts for the behavior of these patients? We present results from two experiments designed to distinguish rival theoretical accounts of apperceptive agnosia. In our studies, we attempted to simulate apperceptive agnosia in neurologicall

Lateral differences for person perception: effects of task on visual processing of handwriting.

Sergent and Bindra suggested that identification of faces using few different stimuli engages mainly the left hemisphere and, conversely, that discrimination of faces using more stimuli engages mainly the right hemisphere. The present study examined whether this suggestion holds for the perception of handwriting which, like faces, authorizes the perception of "persons". Normal adults were presented stimuli consisting of a word written in various hands, laterally displayed for 180 msec. Exp. 1 (identification) was conducted with 8 subjects, who were asked to identify (push-button) four differen

Decoding object categories from electroencephalography during free viewing reveals early information evolution compared to passive viewing.

Object processing is central to visual perception, and its neural substrates inform cognitive and computational models of vision. Electroencephalographic (EEG) research has increasingly adopted multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) to decode distributed neural representations, moving beyond average signal changes and predefined electrodes. Yet, most MVPA studies use passive viewing paradigms that constrain eye movements and evoke brain activity by external stimuli presentation, creating an artificial dissociation between perception and action. Here, we examine object category representations du

Shape coding in occipito-temporal cortex relies on object silhouette, curvature, and medial axis.

Object recognition relies on different transformations of the retinal input, carried out by the visual system, that range from local contrast to object shape and category. While some of those transformations are thought to occur at specific stages of the visual hierarchy, the features they represent are correlated (e.g., object shape and identity) and selectivity for the same feature overlaps in many brain regions. This may be explained either by collinearity across representations or may instead reflect the coding of multiple dimensions by the same cortical population. Moreover, orthogonal an

Spatiotopic updating across saccades revealed by spatially-specific fMRI adaptation.

Brain representations of visual space are predominantly eye-centred (retinotopic) yet our experience of the world is largely world-centred (spatiotopic). A long-standing question is how the brain creates continuity between these reference frames across successive eye movements (saccades). Here we use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to address whether spatially specific repetition suppression (RS) is evident during trans-saccadic perception. We presented two successive Gabor patches (S1 and S2) in either the upper or lower visual field, left or right of fixation. Spatial congruency

Selectivity and tolerance ("invariance") both increase as visual information propagates from cortical area V4 to IT.

Our ability to recognize objects despite large changes in position, size, and context is achieved through computations that are thought to increase both the shape selectivity and the tolerance ("invariance") of the visual representation at successive stages of the ventral pathway [visual cortical areas V1, V2, and V4 and inferior temporal cortex (IT)]. However, these ideas have proven difficult to test. Here, we consider how well population activity patterns at two stages of the ventral stream (V4 and IT) discriminate between, and generalize across, different images. We found that both V4 and

Pattern electroretinogram (PERG) and pattern visual evoked potential (PVEP) in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most common causes of dementia in the world. Patients with AD frequently complain of vision disturbances that do not manifest as changes in routine ophthalmological examination findings. The main causes of these disturbances are neuropathological changes in the visual cortex, although abnormalities in the retina and optic nerve cannot be excluded. Pattern electroretinogram (PERG) and pattern visual evoked potential (PVEP) tests are commonly used in ophthalmology to estimate bioelectrical function of the retina and optic nerve. The aim of this study was to

Interhemispheric differences in extrastriate areas during visuo-spatial selective attention.

Functional asymmetries between hemispheres have been reported in relation to spatial and temporal information processing. Here we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the influence of task on activity in extrastriate areas during selective spatial attention. During bilateral visual stimulation, subjects attended either the left or the right hemifield. Within the attended side, the task was either to discriminate the orientation of the stimuli or to judge their temporal characteristics. The bilateral stimulation caused symmetric activation of the left and right occipitotemp

Visual changes mediated by beer in retrobulbar neuritis--an investigative case report.

A patient with established retrobulbar neuritis and Uhthoff's phenomenon who claimed that his visual acuity improved after drinking beer was assessed by detailed quantitative psychophysical tests. Studies of electrophysiological responses and biochemical levels of blood serum before and after drinking on several occasions were also made. The results of tests of contrast sensitivity, spectral sensitivity, flicker sensitivity, and visually evoked potential confirmed his observation. Some mechanisms for this phenomenon are considered.

[Statistical VEP analysis for approximate determination of latency distribution of visually evoked single cortical stimulus responses].

It is suggested that disturbances of excitation velocity in optic nerve disease go along with a temporal heterogenity of impulse conduction which subsequently may be responsible for an increased variability of latencies of cortical visual evoked potentials. Since the latencies of each single evoked response, being superimposed by EEG-background activity, cannot be measured, we developed a computer-assisted statistical technique in an attempt to quantify this variability. Random samples (n = 30) were taken from the whole of stimulus-correlated EEG-segments recorded during a clinical routine exa

Visual agnosia in an artist.

This report describes a 73 year old left-handed male artist who presented with agnosic symptoms following an occipital cerebral vascular accident. Against a background of a memory disturbance, but otherwise essentially intact linguistic and cognitive capacities, the patient was generally unable to identify single objects on visual presentation, and displayed marked difficulty in interpreting complex objects, depicted scenes, and partially occluded figures. The patient's preserved ability to recognize geometric forms, to perceive optical illusions, and to copy designs, and objects with consider
