Associations between protocol-related operational factors, MRI duration, and propofol exposure in pediatric MRI.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric MRI frequently requires propofol anesthesia to obtain motion-free diagnostic images. Operational imaging factors may influence examination duration and anesthetic exposure, but these relationships remain incompletely characterized. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate associations between operational protocol-related operational factors, MRI duration, and propofol exposure during pediatric MRI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 2,149 pediatric MRI examinations performed under propofol anesthesia between January 2020 and May 2025. Operational imaging variables i

Cost analysis of nonsedated fast-spine magnetic resonance imaging in pediatric patients.

OBJECTIVE: MRI is a cornerstone of pediatric spinal evaluation but frequently requires sedation or general anesthesia in young children due to prolonged scan times. This use of anesthesia introduces periprocedural risks and logistical barriers that can delay care and increase burden for families. Fast-spine MRI (fsMRI) protocols offer a motion-tolerant, abbreviated alternative that may allow nonsedated imaging for selected pediatric indications. This study evaluates the clinical feasibility and operational impact of nonsedated fsMRI compared with routine pediatric spine MRI, with secondary ana

Effect of early lollipop sucking in the post-anesthesia care unit on recovery quality in children undergoing outpatient dental treatment under general anesthesia: a prospective randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols emphasize multimodal strategies to improve postoperative outcomes. In children undergoing dental treatment under general anesthesia, the recovery is often accompanied by pain, agitation, and oral discomfort. Although lollipop sucking may alleviate these issues through physiological and psychological mechanisms, some evidence supporting its use remains limited. In this work, we evaluated whether early lollipop sucking enhances recovery quality and satisfaction in the population. METHODS: From March to October 2025, we conducted a ran

Assessment of Office-Based Probing with Dacryoendoscopy for Treatment of Congenital Nasolacrimal Duct Obstruction: A Retrospective Study.

We aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of office-based probing with dacryoendoscopy under local anesthesia for congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CNLDO). This single-institution study retrospectively reviewed data on 72 eyes of 64 consecutive children (38 boys, 43 eyes; 26 girls, 29 eyes), aged between 6 and 17 (mean age: 10.0 ± 2.7) months with suspected CNLDO, from July 2016 to February 2022. These patients underwent probing with dacryoendoscopy under local anesthesia. CNLDO was diagnosed clinically based on the presence of epiphora and sticky eyes due to mucous discharge commen

Endovascular approaches in pediatric interventional oncology.

The demand for interventional oncological (IO) treatment of pediatric cancers is becoming increasingly common, at least at several tertiary care institutions. The data and techniques used in pediatric IO are largely extrapolated from experience in adult patients. The management of pediatric tumors differs from that in adults in several categories, such as, the curative intent of treatment, wide use of general anesthesia, aggressive pain management, potentially longer hospital stay, variation in chemotherapy dosing etc. Additionally, pediatric cancers are managed by protocols directed by nation

Anesthetic management of a large mandibular odontogenic myxoma in a child - a case report.

Numerous neoplastic lesions can arise in the orofacial region in the pediatric populations. Odontogenic tumors typically affect the mandible more than the maxilla. Airway management can be challenging in pediatric oral tumors because of the distorted anatomy and physiological variations. Conventional awake fiberoptic intubation is not always possible owing to limited cooperation from the pediatric populations. Herein, we report the case of a 1-year-old child with odontogenic myxoma of the mandible and an anticipated difficult airway. Given the expected difficulties in the airway, video laryngo

Hypnosis in Anesthesia: A Systematic Literature Review of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Hypnosis has a long history of use in anesthesia, but it has not yet achieved the level of widespread clinical usage, despite favorable results in some individual studies. This systematic review aimed to quantify hypnosis in the different anesthetic domains. A comprehensive search of the literature was undertaken using Medline, Web of Science, Embase, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. In addition, the studies needed to be randomized controlled trials studying hypnosis and anesthesia. The search yielded 19 studies with a total of 3,699 patients over obstetrics, pediatrics,

Point-of-Care Ultrasound-Guided Hematoma Block for Forearm Fracture Reduction.

Fractures of the radius and ulna are very common in pediatric patients. Procedural sedation or general anesthesia is typically required to perform orthopedic reductions. There are several studies in the adult literature that conclude that point-of-care ultrasound-guided hematoma blocks are faster and just as efficacious as procedural sedation for reducing fractures in the emergency department. There is currently no literature examining point-of-care ultrasound-guided hematoma blocks in pediatric patients. This case describes a pediatric patient with a distal radius fracture who underwent a hem

Case Report of Midazolam Withdrawal-Induced Catatonia in a 9-Year-Old Patient.

Benzodiazepine withdrawal-induced catatonia is a rare phenomenon in the adult population and has never been reported in a pediatric patient. We present a 9-year-old boy who exhibited catatonia symptoms following discontinuation of a midazolam infusion in the pediatric intensive care unit. The pediatric anesthesia acute pain team was consulted. When the patient's altered mental status could not otherwise be explained, benzodiazepine withdrawal-induced catatonia was considered. A dose of 2 mg intravenous lorazepam was given and the patient's symptoms dramatically improved within 5 minutes of adm…

Superior extraconal orbital fat hyperintensityin pediatric population: a potential diagnostic pitfall.

BACKGROUND: With the increasing use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in children, radiologists frequently encounter incidental findings that may mimic pathology. One such underrecognized finding is T2-weighted hyperintensity in the superior extraconal orbital fat, which is occasionally mistaken for an infiltrative or neoplastic process. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to characterize the imaging appearance, prevalence, and clinical associations of superior extraconal orbital fat T2 hyperintensity in pediatric MRI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of 143 pediatric pat

Superimposed high-frequency jet ventilation used for endolaryngotracheal surgery in a child with congenital subglottic stenosis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Airway management and anesthesia during endolaryngotracheal surgery in patients with obstructive airway diseases pose a major challenge for anesthesiologists, especially in pediatric patients. Children with obstructive airway disease often have a potentially difficult airway. Adequate airway assessment and preparation before anesthesia is essential. In the formulation of the entire anesthesia strategy, the choice of ventilation mode is the most critical. Superimposed high-frequency jet ventilation (SHFJV) is an enormous step forward in the progress of difficult surgery of the laryn
