In the years between 1971 and 1979 in the Department of Urological Surgery of the Municipal Weil Emil Hospital in 16 of the 72 coral calculi filling the renal pelvis primary (so-called uric acid) calculi were found to which lytholysis was applied. Fifty-six cases (secondary calculi) were operated, in the majority by conservative surgery (40 cases), 16 patients were nephrectomized. The retroperitoneum and the pelvis are difficult areas to examine by conventional radiographic means. Pelvic ultrasound can distinguish cystic from solid masses, but is poor in defining tissue planes. Multiple transitional cell tumours of the renal pelvis and proximal ureter of a solitary kidney were successfully managed by total ureterectomy, extracorporeal subtotal resection of the renal pelvis, autotransplantation, and calicovesicostomy. The method permits resection of a maximum of the uroepithelium of the upper urinary tract at the same time as it preserves available renal parenchyma. It also implies a new and exciting approach to the renal pelvis for endoscopic postoperative control and local treatment of the malignancy.

In 80 cases of roentgenologic filling defects in renal pelvis and ureter, which could be determined exactly preoperatively, we could confirm the diagnostic value of cytology from washings of renal pelvis and ureter (lavage cytology) especially in preoperative diagnosis of carcinoma of renal pelvis and ureter. Twenty of 25 tumors (80%) were detected preoperatively. There were no false positive results. The diagnostic reliability of this method was more accurate than with normal exfoliative urinary cytology from other authors. The results are discussed together with the literature.

In resonse to the limitations of urinary cytology which have resulted in a high incidence of false negative reports, a technique of retrograde brush biopsy has been developed. This technique aids in the diagnosis of carcinomas of the ureteral and renal collecting systems, thereby permitting earlier and more intensive treatment of malignant lesions of the urinary tract.

An early evaluation of the Chiari pelvic osteotomy done on 19 hips in 16 patients is presented. Indications were: (1) congenital hip dysplasia, where conservative or other surgical treatment had failed or where the patient's age contraindicted conservative treatment, and (2) hypoplastic hip joints associated with neuromuscular disorders. Results were classified according to pain, limp, Trendelenburg sign, range of motion, and radiographic appearance.
