[Clinical analysis of endoscopy negative gastroesophageal reflux disease in the elderly].

The purpose of this study was to describe the clinical analysis of endoscopy negative gastroesophageal reflux disease (EN-GERD) in the elderly. 35 elderly patients of both sexes, 60 years or older with EN-GERD, 33 elderly patients with reflux esophagitis and 41 elderly patients as control group were included in this study. All patients witnessed verbal informed consent to participate in the study. EN-GERD was defined as the patients with normal endoscopy despite of heartburn as their chief complaint and who were completely relieved with heartburn after one-week omeprazole treatment. Expression of homeobox gene CDX2 precedes that of CDX1 during the progression of intestinal metaplasia.

BACKGROUND: The CDX1 and CDX2 genes are intestinal transcription factors that may be involved in the regulation of proliferation and differentiation of intestinal epithelial cells. There have been no detailed reports directly comparing the expression of CDX1 with that of CDX2 in chronic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia. Accordingly, we examined the expression of CDX1/2 and its association with the expression of other intestinal metaplasia-associated genes during the development of intestinal metaplasia. METHODS: The expression of CDX1/2 genes was analyzed, using the reverse transcriptase-p

"Familial hyperpepsinogenemia" and Helicobacter pylori infection.

OBJECTIVE: Pepsinogen 1 (PG1) is a proenzyme precursor to pepsin, a protease secreted by the gastric chief cell. PG1 levels correlate with maximal gastric acid output. In 1979, Rotter et al. reported two pedigrees in which elevated PG1 levels and duodenal ulcers were prevalent. They proposed autosomal dominant inheritance of elevated PG1 and suggested that it was a risk factor for duodenal ulcer disease. In 1982, Helicobacter pylori (Hp) was discovered and was shown to be an important factor in peptic ulcer disease. Hp infection is also associated with increased PGI levels. We tested serum fro

Dose-dependent promoting effects of catechol on glandular stomach carcinogenesis in BALB/c mice initiated with N-methyl-N-nitrosourea.

The effects of catechol administration in the diet on stomach carcinogenesis in mice after initiation with N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU) in the drinking water were investigated in a development trial for a new experimental protocol. Male 6-week-old BALB/c mice were given MNU in the drinking water intermittently for a total of three one-week periods, with one-week intervals, at the concentration of 120 ppm (groups 1 and 2). Groups 3 and 4 served as non initiated controls. From week 7, groups 1 and 3 were divided into three subgroups and the mice were fed on diet containing 0.05% (groups 1a and 3

Efficacy of morantel sustained release trilaminate bolus against gastrointestinal nematodes in grazing dairy calves in Kenya.

The efficacy of morantel sustained release trilaminate (MSRT) bolus against gastrointestinal nematodes was evaluated under field conditions over a 10-month period. Twenty weaner calves were randomly divided into 2 groups of 10 calves each and grazed from March to December on adjacent, similarly contaminated paddocks. Group 1 calves (T-1) served as untreated controls while group 2 calves (T-2) were dosed at turnout with MSRT bolus designed to release morantel tartrate continuously for 90 days. The efficacy of MSRT was assessed by comparison of parasitological data (faecal worm egg counts, herba

Gastric cancer, gastritis and plasma vitamin C: results from an international correlation and cross-sectional study. The Eurogast Study Group.

Low intake of foods rich in vitamin C is associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer, and geographic variation in average vitamin C intake, therefore, could explain some of the wide international variation in gastric cancer rates. This multicentre study investigated the relationships between plasma levels of vitamin C, as an indicator of vitamin C intake, and gastric cancer rates, markers of gastritis and other socio-demographic variables. Fasting plasma samples from about 1,400 individuals from 9 centres in 7 countries worldwide were assayed for total vitamin C using a fluorometric as

Revealing autoimmune gastritis: Polypoid nodule scar development after endoscopic submucosal dissection for early gastric cancer.

Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), the standard treatment for early gastric cancer, typically results in homogeneous flat scars. However, in some cases, polypoid nodule scars (PNS) may develop, complicating the cancer recurrence assessment. This case report describes a 60-year-old man with a history of Helicobacter pylori infection who underwent two ESD procedures: first for early antral gastric cancer and then for gastric body adenoma. Subsequently, an erythematous protruding lesion developed at the antral ESD scar site. Lesion biopsy revealed regenerative and hyperplastic tissue growth,

Electrochemical immunosensor for the predictive cancer biomarker SLFN11 using reduced graphene oxide/MIL-101(Cr)-NH2 composite.

SLFN11 is a predictive cancer biomarker essential for identifying tumors that are sensitive to DNA-damaging agents, facilitating more personalized and effective treatment approaches. Detecting this biomarker can guide therapeutic decisions and improve outcomes for cancer patients. However, existing detection methods for SLFN11 are complex and require advanced techniques. In this study, we introduce the first immunosensor designed for on-site detection of SLFN11. An advanced electrochemical immunosensor platform utilizing a composite of graphene oxide (GO) and chromium-based metal organic frame

[Type A, Type B, and Non-atrophic Gastritis].

The gastric cancer risk varies based on the etiology and severity of gastritis, which depends on a history of Helicobacter pylori infection and the secretory capacity of the stomach. Type A gastritis is associated with reverse atrophy of the corpus and type B with progressive atrophy extending from the antrum to the corpus. Diffuse or spotty redness in the corpus together with high serum pepsinogen (PG) II levels and a low PG I/II ratio are observed in patients with H. pylori infection when secretory capacity of the stomach is intact. Diffuse-type gastric cancer may develop near the gastric fo

Standard vs magnifying narrow-band imaging endoscopy for diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection and gastric precancerous conditions.

BACKGROUND: Advances in endoscopic imaging enable the identification of patients at high risk of gastric cancer. However, there are no comparative data on the utility of standard and magnifying narrow-band imaging (M-NBI) endoscopy for diagnosing Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, gastric atrophy, and intestinal metaplasia. AIM: To compare the diagnostic performance of standard and M-NBI endoscopy for H. pylori gastritis and precancerous conditions. METHODS: In 254 patients, standard endoscopy findings were classified into mosaic-like appearance (type A), diffuse homogenous redness (

Long-term gastric cancer risk in male smokers with atrophic corpus gastritis.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate long-term gastric cancer risk in male smokers with and without atrophic gastritis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 22,346 elderly male smokers participated in the Helsinki Gastritis Study between the years 1989 and 1993. Serum pepsinogen I (PGI) was measured for the men, and 2,132 men with low PGI (<25 µg/L; a marker of atrophic corpus gastritis) were invited to undergo gastroscopy because of increased gastric cancer risk. Endoscopy was performed to 1,327 men, who were followed up for a median of 13.6 years and a maximum of 25.3 years therea

Sex differences in the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection: an individual participant data pooled analysis (StoP Project).

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is more frequent among men, though the magnitude of the association might be inaccurate due to potential misclassification of lifetime infection and publication bias. Moreover, infection is common, and most studies are cross-sectional. Thus, prevalence ratios (PRs) may be easier to interpret than odds ratios (ORs). AIM: The aim of this study was to quantify the association between sex and H. pylori infection using controls from 14 studies from the Stomach Cancer Pooling (StoP) Project. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: H. pylori infection was def

Histological Features of Gastric Mucosa Serologically Diagnosed as Gastric Atrophy without Helicobacter pylori Infection.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Although gastric atrophy is primarily caused by Helicobacter pylori infection, it is unclear why patients serologically diagnosed with gastric atrophy without H. pylori infection exhibit greater atrophy. We investigated histopathological features in serologically diagnosed gastric atrophy without H. pylori infection. METHODS: Thirty-four patients with positive serum pepsinogen and negative serum H. pylori antibody tests underwent gastric biopsy and histological evaluation. The presence of enterochromaffin-like cells (ECL) was also evaluated. Gastric cancer risks for each hist

Metachronous gastric cancer after successful Helicobacter pylori eradication.

The high incidence of gastric cancer in Japan initially resulted in establishment of a country-wide gastric cancer screening program to detect early and treatable cancers. In 2013 countrywide Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) eradication was approved coupled with endoscopy to assess for the presence of chronic gastritis. Current data support the notion that cure of the infection in those with non-atrophic gastritis will prevent development of gastric cancer. However, while progression to more severe damage is halted in those who have already developed, atrophic gastritis/gastric atrophy remain a

Incidence and risk factors for the development of chronic atrophic gastritis: five year follow-up of a population-based cohort study.

Chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) is a well-established precursor of intestinal gastric cancer. However, data on incidence of CAG are rare, especially from population-based studies. The aim of this analysis was to estimate the incidence of CAG in a large population-based study among older adults from Germany and to identify major risk factors associated with its development. In the baseline and 5-year follow-up examinations of the ESTHER study, serological measurements of pepsinogen (PG) I and II and Helicobacter pylori antibodies were performed in 5,229 women and men, aged 50-74 years at basel
