BACKGROUND: Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-derived exosomes are well recognized immunomodulating agents for cardiac repair, while the detailed mechanisms remain elusive. The Pericardial drainage pathway provides the heart with immunosurveillance and establishes a simplified model for studying the mechanisms underlying the immunomodulating effects of therapeutic exosomes.
METHODS: Myocardial infarction (MI) models with and without pericardiectomy (corresponding to Tomy MI and NonTomy MI) were established to study the functions of pericardial drainage pathway in immune activation of cardiac-draini…

Deep sternal wound infection (DSWI) is a grave complication of median sternotomy, associated with high morbidity, mortality and escalating t … erwent coronary artery bypass surgery, 10 valve replacement, two aortic replacement surgery and one pericardiectomy. In six cases, no internal mammary artery was used in cardiac surgery, in 11 cases one and in seven cases both internal mammary arteries were used. OBJECTIVE: Retrospective study of surgical pathology experience on cardiac and pericardial tumors at the University of Padua in the era of immunohistochemistry and endomyocardial biopsy.
METHODS: In the period 1970-1995, we studied 125 bioptic primary neoplasms: specimens were obtained from surgical resection in 116 cases, heart transplantation in 3, pericardiectomy in 3, endomyocardial biopsy in 2 and thoracoscopic biopsy in 1. Tumor histotype was established by light microscopy and more recently by immuno-histochemistry, using a large panel of antibodies, through avidin-biotin peroxidase me…

PURPOSE: Pericardial effusion (PE), tamponade, and atrial fibrillation are challenging complications after cardiac surgeries. This prospective randomized study was conducted to evaluate the impact of posterior pericardiotomy (PP) in the prevention of PE and cardiac tamponed after adult cardiac surgery.
METHODS: This single-center, prospective, randomized controlled trial included 330 patients undergoing open-heart surgery. They were randomly assigned to either a PP group or a control group.
RESULTS: Of 703 screened patients, 330 were enrolled from January 2022 to June 2024 (mean age: 50.2 ±

BACKGROUND: The first reported case of cardiac herniation was in 1948 and occurred following pericardiectomy during a lung cancer resection. Although rare, this potentially fatal surgical complication may occur following any operation in which a pericardial incision or resection is performed. The majority of literature on cardiac herniation involves case reports after intrapericardial pneumonectomy. Currently, there are no reports of cardiac herniation after thymectomy with pericardial resection.

BACKGROUND: Patients with severe cardiac dysfunction, supported on extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), develop left atrial hypertension and often warrant atrial decompression. The procedural risks and outcomes, however, are not well established. Objective of this study is to understand the utilization, safety, and outcomes of atrial septostomy in children supported on venoarterial ECMO utilizing the IMPACT registry database.
METHODS: Data from 55 independent sites reporting to the registry was used for this descriptive study. Patients supported with cardiac ECMO that underwent percut

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the long-term outcome of video-assisted thoracoscopic (VATS) thoracic duct ligation (TDL) and pericardectomy for treatment of chylothorax in dogs.
STUDY DESIGN: Multi-institutional retrospective study.
ANIMALS: Thirty-nine client-owned dogs.
METHODS: Dogs were included if they had undergone a VATS TDL and pericardectomy and had at least 1-year follow-up or had died within 1 postoperative year. Medical records were evaluated, and recorded data included clinicopathological and diagnostic imaging results, surgical findings, complications, conversion rates, and long-term

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous balloon pericardiotomy (PBP) has been successful in managing large pericardial effusions, particularly in patients with malignant conditions. The objective of this study was to evaluate safety and feasibility of this procedure (PBP) in patients who had recurrent life threatening pericardial effusion at West Virginia University Hospital (WVUH).
METHODS: This is retrospective review of consecutive series of pericardial windows by PBP. This report entails our experience of 36 procedures performed from November 2002 to November 2012 by PBP.
RESULTS: Thirty-six percutaneo

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation is a common post-operative complication of cardiac surgery and is associated with an increased risk of post-operative stroke, increased length of intensive care unit and hospital stays, healthcare costs and mortality. Numerous trials have evaluated various pharmacological and non-pharmacological prophylactic interventions for their efficacy in preventing post-operative atrial fibrillation. We conducted an update to a 2004 Cochrane systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature to gain a better understanding of the effectiveness of these interventions.

Scimitar syndrome is a rare but serious congenital condition that consists of anomalous pulmonary venous drainage of the right lung to the inferior vena cava. The appearance on chest radiography resembles a curved Turkish sword, or scimitar. Scimitar syndrome is associated with other anomalies, including hypoplasia of the right lung, dextroposition of the heart, anomalous systemic arterial supply to the right lung, and atrial septal defect. Clinical manifestations in infants include severe tachypnea and cyanosis. Adult patients may present with dyspnea and increased fatigue. Few adult cases ha

This case report discusses a rare instance of polymicrobial pericarditis in a man in his early 60s with a history of substance abuse. The patient presented with chest pain and shortness of breath, later diagnosed as pericarditis caused by Streptococcus anginosus, S. intermedius and Candida glabrata, likely originating from a large adjacent oesophageal ulcer. The condition led to critical illness, requiring pericardiocentesis, antibiotic and antifungal therapy. Despite initial improvement, the patient experienced recurrence and ultimately underwent pericardectomy. The article emphasises the rar

BACKGROUND: Penetrating cardiac foreign bodies are rare in dogs but can result in life-threatening complications, including pericardial effu … ll, with its tip directed toward the left atrium. A left lateral thoracotomy followed by subphrenic pericardiectomy was performed, and the foreign body, identified as a 4.8-cm sewing needle, was successfully removed. At 9-day follow-up, the dog was clinically normal with an uncomplicated surgical wound and no radiographic evidence of pleural effusion or pulmonary …

BACKGROUND: Transient constrictive pericarditis (TCP) is a distinct constrictive pericarditis (CP) subtype characterized by acute pericardial inflammation and transient constrictive physiology. If left untreated, it may progress to irreversible CP requiring pericardiectomy. However, making an early diagnosis of TCP remains difficult.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old man presented with fever, chest pain, and dyspnea following preceding flu symptoms. An initial investigation suggested right-sided heart failure. Laboratory results revealed elevated inflammatory markers and hepatic enzyme levels.…

We report a case of pulmonary artery catheter (PAC) injury by radio frequency device for maze procedure. A 64-year-old female with severe mitral insufficiency, tricuspid insufficiency and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation was scheduled for mitral valve repair, tricuspid annulo- plasty and maze procedure including right-sided maze. Under general anesthesia, a PAC was inserted to pul- monary artery (PA) uneventfully. After radio frequency maze procedure and mitral valve repair, PAC was removed from right atrium by the surgeon for tricus- pid annuloplasty. Thereafter, the surgeon reinserted the PAC
