Periostitis of the mandible. A case report and review of the literature.

Periostitis of the mandible has not been previously discussed in the otolaryngologic literature and only infrequently in the dental literature. It is characterized by a hard, painless, fixed mass overlying the mandible in a child or young adult. The etiology is usually an endosteal infection in the molar region with periosteal inflammation. Reactive new bone is deposited beneath the elevated periosteum, external to the outer cortex of the jaw, and separated from it by a layer of suppurative fluid. Treatment consists of removal of involved teeth and infected bone, drainage of the fluid pocked a…

The importance of middle or long finger realignment in ulnar drift.

Based upon the hypothesis that ulnar drift is the result of a chain reaction starting with a medial shift of the proximal phalanx at the metacarpophalangeal joint and progessing to subluxation of the extensor tendon and finally subluxation of the metacarpophalangeal joint, the author recommends early operative realignment. The extensor tendon is partially divided and a portion passed through the base of the phalanx, the intrinsic tendons are transferred to divided, the junctura tendnium is served, the periosteum is stripped from the neck of the metacarpal, and areas of bony erosions are curett…

Temporal bone marrow of the rat and its connections to the inner ear.

Calvarial bone marrow has been found to be central in the brain immune response, being connected to the dura through channels which allow le … channels similar to those of calvarial bone, and only a few channels were directed toward the canal periosteum. On the contrary, endochondral bone marrow was well connected to the labyrinth through vascular loops (directed to the spiral ligament for CAEM and to the bony labyrinth periosteum for VEM), and to dural sinuses. In addition, CAEM was also connected …

Complete Spontaneous Bone Regeneration following Surgical Enucleation of a Mandibular Cemento-Ossifying Fibroma.

BACKGROUND: Cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF) is a type of benign fibro-osseous tumor that mainly occurs in the maxillofacial region. Bone reconstruction after the surgery is often performed with bone transplantation. However, the present case report describes the accurate diagnosis and successful surgical resection of a COF with periosteum preservation, after which the defect was completely and spontaneously filled with the newly formed bone through a natural process. Case Presentation. A 32-year-old Iranian female patient presented with a history of gradual development of painful swelling, spo…

A new improvement: subperiosteal cocktail application to effectively reduce pain and blood loss after total knee arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Pain and blood loss after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are unsolved clinical problems. Some studies reported that periarticular cocktail injection can effectively reduce pain and blood loss. However, there was no gold standard about the cocktail ingredient and injection location. More osteotomy and less soft tissue release in TKA with mild deformity; besides, plenty of nerves and blood vessels are contained in the periosteums and bone marrow. In this study, we aimed to detect the clinical results of subperiosteal cocktail application in TKA. METHODS: Two groups were included acco…

Premature fusion of facial sutures with free periosteal grafts. An experimental study with special reference to bone formation with free periosteal grafts from the tibia, the scapula and the calvarium.

The present study was undertaken to obtain more information on the bone forming mechanisms with free periosteal grafts and to study prematur … e formation seen in fracture healing. There is no difference in the bone forming mechanism with the periosteum from an enchondrally ossifying bone when compared with the periosteum of an intramembranously ossifying bone. In all the three different periosteal grafts studied, there was a cartilage stage before bone formation. In the muscle, all these three per …

Subgaleal/subperiosteal versus subdural drainage for chronic subdural hematoma: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Chronic subdural hematomas (cSDH) are increasingly prevalent, particularly among the elderly, and often require surgical intervention as the standard treatment. The placement of drains following surgical evacuation of cSDH is widely recognized as an effective strategy to reduce recurrence rates and improve clinical outcomes. However, the optimal location for drain placement remains a topic of debate. This study aims to comparatively evaluate the efficacy and safety of subgaleal/subperiosteal drainage (SGPD) and subdural drainage (SDD) techniques in patients with cSDH. This study followed PRISM

Development and Characterization of a Novel Composite Hydrogel Biomaterial for Improved Mucoperiosteal Wound Repair.

Mucoperiosteal wound healing, as it occurs after pediatric cleft palate surgery, can be challenging due to the limitations of current treatments such as tissue flaps secured with sutures and fibrin glue. In this study, we characterized the in vitro performance of a novel composite hydrogel biomaterial designed to be employed as an in situ wound filler and enhance mucoperiosteal wound healing. We evaluated a range of photopolymerizable formulations containing methacrylated gelatin (GelMA), glycol chitosan, and bioglass microparticles. Our aim was to identify one or more formulations with an app

Endoscopic resection of forehead osteomas: Technical notes.

INTRODUCTION: Forehead osteoma is an uncommon benign bone tumor that causes cosmetic disfigurement and occasional pain. Traditional excision directly over the lesion creates a visible scar on the forehead. PROCEDURE: We describe a method of endoscopic resection of the forehead osteoma, via incisions within the hairline. The access incision was hidden behind the frontal hairline and the dissection plane went in the subperiosteal layer. The injury of the nerve branch and vessel can be easily avoided and endorsed by manipulating the endoscope. CONCLUSION: Aesthetic considerations are important

Climate and New World periosteal reaction patterns: implications for migration routes into the western hemisphere.

The presence of the diseases yaws and bejel are indicated by periosteal reaction patterns. The distributions of these two diseases in ancient North American human populations show evidence of climatic influence. Those ancient populations lacking either yaws or bejel (the null periosteal reaction pattern) can be found in the coldest parts of the Cold Winter Regions. Those populations with yaws (the poly-ostotic periosteal reaction) can be found in the milder portions of the Cold Winter Regions. The populations with bejel (the pauci-ostotic periosteal reaction) are found either outside of or mar

The histological spectrum of subperiosteal fibrocartilaginous pseudotumor of long bone (focal fibrocartilaginous dysplasia).

Clinicopathological features in six cases of focal fibrocartilaginous dysplasia (FFCD) which involved either the tibia (n = 4) or the femur (n = 2) were reviewed. All cases presented clinical and radiological characteristic features, and histopathological findings were analyzed in five of the six cases. The subject group comprised three boys and three girls, ages ranged from 12 to 18 months. Histologically, the individual lesions showed regional variation in cellularity, amount of fibrous and cartilaginous components. Paucicellular areas were mainly composed of dense fibrous tissue while more

Recognition of hypertrophic osteoarthropathy in skeletal remains.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize hypertrophic osteoarthropathy (HOA) in skeletons to allow its recognition in the archeologic record. METHODS: Individuals diagnosed in life with diseases known to cause HOA were examined from the Hamman-Todd, Grant, and Terry human skeletal collections. The latter consist of 5142 individuals who died in the early part of this century. A "control" group was obtained by examination of 100 (consecutive, exclusive of HOA related disorders) additional individuals from the Terry Collection, which were accompanied by diagnoses not known to be associated with HOA. Surface-based hemangiomas of bone. A review of 11 cases.

The surface-based hemangioma of bone is an uncommon cause of periosteal- or cortical-based lesions. The files of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology were searched for lesions diagnosed as cortical hemangioma or periosteal hemangioma received between the years 1950 and 1990; 11 cases with follow-up results were identified. The 11 patients ranged in age from 11 to 31 years of age at the time of initial symptoms (average, 21 years; mean, 23 years). Sixty percent of the patients were male and 40% were female. Skeletal sites of involvement included the tibia (45%), the fibula (36%), the femur (

Case report 834: Chronic sclerosing osteomyelitis of the mandible with long bone periostitis.

We present the case of a patient with primary chronic osteomyelitis of the mandible, the radiological appearance of which is compatible with a diagnosis of chronic sclerosing osteomyelitis. The accompanying femoral and tibial periosteal reactive new bone formation and the benign clinical course suggest that this presentation may represent a form of chronic multifocal osteomyelitis.

[Infantile cortical hyperostosis (Caffey-Silverman syndrome). Histologic, histochemical and electron microscopic studies].

Infantile cortical hyperostosis, also known as Caffey's disease or Caffey-Silverman syndrome, is an uncommon clinico-pathological lesion of unknown etiology and uncertain histogenesis. One of the most striking features is the early age of patients at the onset of the disease, showing swelling of the soft tissues overlaying bones, hyperirritability, and, subsequently, periosteal new bone production. The natural history of the disease proves to be self-limiting. Multiple areas are involved in the majority of cases. These polyostic forms are easily clinically diagnosed. But in rare monostic prese

[The 3 palatine fibromucous membranes. Their role in maxillary growth. Therapeutic role in surgery of the palatine shelves].

The palatine fibromucosa is not the same throughout the various regions of the palatine vault and its role differs in maxillary growth. On can in fact distinguish: --the fibromucosa of the "palatine lamellae", thin and smooth, which occupies only the median and posterior portion of the vault, opposite the nasal fossae. Its importance derives from the fact that it covers the medio-palatine and palatino-vomerian suture complex, which has an essential role in transverse, vertical and also sagital maxillary growth; --the palatine maxillary fibromucosa, thick and striated, which surrounds the above
