Personality dimensions and psychopathological symptoms were assessed in 50 female patients hospitalized for the treatment of anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa and in 19 healthy female controls of similar age. Restricting anorexia nervosa patients, who had lost weight by consistently reducing their food intake, reported significantly greater self-control, inhibition of emotionality, and conscientiousness than controls or bulimia nervosa patients, before and after the data were corrected for depressive and eating pathology. Both nonbulimic and bulimic anorexia nervosa patients expressed strong

The role of emotional factors in patients with vertigo has been widely debated. Patients with vertigo, as well as patients in two separate control groups, were tested with the Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI), the Cornell Medical Index (CMI), and a questionarie designed to evaluate the severity of the patients symptoms in order to further investigate the role of personality and its relationship to the symptom of vertigo. In patients with Meniere disease, a strong positive correlation was found between the severity of vertigo and the EPI and CMI scores. The concept of the psychological vulne…

This study investigates the associations between perceived parenting and borderline personality disorder (BPD) in adolescents. The relations between components of parenting and BPD features were explored. Participants (N = 270; mean age = 15.3) assessed their own BPD features (Personality Assessment Inventory) and both of their parents' parenting practices (Parents as Social Context Questionnaire; Perceived Parental Autonomy Support Scale). SEM results suggest that controlling, rejecting and chaotic parenting all predicted global BPD, and all these parenting components were significantly assoc

20 patients with Raynaud's syndrome were examined psychiatrically, 15 of them psychometrically as well (Giessen test, Freiburg personality inventory). Psychiatrically, there were neither psychoses nor manifest neuroses, but a chronic overconformity, emotional restraint and a compulsive, often stiff way of life were found as group-characteristic features. Psychometrically, the group-personality profiles lay within normal range. Psychopathologically, they showed contours, uncertain at best, of obsessional structure. Coincidence of psychic conflict situations due to chronically social influences …

A brief self-report measure of personal disturbance is presented. Being derived from the Delusions-Symptoms-States Inventory, it focuses exclusively on recent symptomatology, uncontaminated by personality attributes. Data are presented which show significant agreement (a) for the allocation of the items to syndromes by experiences raters, and (b) between patients' self-report and their psychiatrists' ratings. At the anxiety, depression, and total sAD scale levels a high discrimination is found between the normal and pmal distributions, both of which are in contrast to personality measures. The

Three groups of college drug users--those expressing a preference for marijuana, amphetamines, or barbiturates--reported on experiences resulting from their drugs, and these groups, together with a group of nondrug-users, completed the Omnibus Personality Inventory (OPI). On the OPI the nonusers appeared more conventional and conforming than each drug group. Those preferring marijuana were less anxious than any other group, but the most distinctive group was that preferring barbiturates, which appeared the least intellectually inclined and the most emotionally distressed. This group's personal…

Background: The real impact of genetic factors on personality is still unknown, even if in literature about 50% of variance in personality traits are considered genetically determined. The determination of the genetic variance in personality traits could promote psychological well-being and the prevention of psychopathologies, because there are many experimental evidences showing that mental illness is associated to personality. Numerous studies have showed that Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT), brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and serotonin transporter (5-HTT) are genes whose varia

As the field adopts dimensional models of personality disorders (DSM-5 Alternative Model of Personality Disorders [AMPD]; ICD-11 Personality Disorder), it is imperative that clinical assessment tools are available to assess them. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 (MMPI-3) is one such measure, as it is routinely used in clinical practice and assesses a variety of psychological symptoms. The current study aimed to build upon previous literature using a community mental health sample and a multi-method approach. Specifically, a sample of 289 individuals enrolled in various mental …

Age bias on personality pathology measures creates challenges regarding assessment of personality disorders among older adults. This study cross-sectionally examined age bias on measures of the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders' (AMPD) two diagnostic criteria. Younger and older adults in the United States completed the Levels of Personality Functioning Scale-Self-Report (LPFS-SR) and Personality Inventory for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition-Brief Form (PID-5-BF). Differential item functioning (DIF) analyses examined bias on the item-level whereas dif…
