Toscana virus (TOSV; Bunyaviridae, Phlebovirus) is transmitted by sandflies of the genus Phlebotomus in the Mediterranean area. One strain of TOSV was isolated from a total of almost 23 000 sandflies collected in Kabylia, Algeria. The complete genome was sequenced, and phylogenetic studies indicated that it was most closely related with TOSV strain from Tunisia within lineage A, which also includes Italian, French and Turkish strains. A seroprevalence study performed on 370 sera collected from people living in the same area showed that almost 50% possessed neutralizing antibodies against TOSV,…

Abstract. During the last 35 years, visceral leishmaniasis has spread in Greece with autochthonous human cases appearing in 41 of the 54 pre … seropositivity. Cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis, caused by Leishmania tropica are also increasing. Phlebotomus similis believed to be the potential vector of L. tropica in Greece, was found in areas where the disease is widespread but also where cases have never been reported implying a danger of introduction of this anthroponotic parasite to new regions.

Anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a common cause of ulcerative lesions and disfiguring scarring among children in Afghanistan. Most lesions occur on the face and are commonly caused by the trypanosome protozoan parasite Leishmania tropica, transmitted by the bite of an infected sandfly (Phlebotomus sergenti). This study compared the effectiveness of a single localized treatment with thermotherapy to 5 days of intralesional administration of Glucantime for the treatment of CL. Three hundred and eighty-two patients with CL were randomly assigned to the two treatment groups and follow…

A prospective study was carried out in a cohort of 355 persons in a leishmaniasis-endemic village of the Patna District in Bihar, India, to … d with neighbors. High prevalence of asymptomatic persons and clinical VL cases and high density of Phlebotomus argentipes sand flies can lead to transmission of VL in VL-endemic areas.

The sand fly Phlebotomus papatasi transmits Leishmania major, which causes cutaneous leishmaniasis, in vast regions of the Old World. In addition to blood, the sand flies feed on plants. In a study of this diet, we observed that one night of feeding on branches of Solanum jasminoides, Ricinus communis, or Bougainvillea glabra drastically shortened the life span of the sand flies. Flowering B. glabra attracted P. papatasi in the field. Nevertheless, in the region endemic for L. major in yards abounding with vector sand flies, the number of P. papatasi trapped near hedges of B. glabra was eight …

To determine the role that Leishmania infantum/human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) coinfected patients could play in the epidemiology of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), we applied direct xenodiagnosis of VL in this study to test the infectivity of six coinfected patients to colonized Phlebotomus perniciosus. All patients proved to be infective for the sand flies. The infectivity of patients who had still not received specific treatment for VL was inversely proportional to their absolute CD4+ T lymphocyte cell count. It has been proven that P. perniciosus can acquire and allow the development of L.…

Cutaneous leishmaniasis cases in Kabul have increased steadily in number since the first report, in 1964. This increase is despite insectici … als and in households is interpreted as being due to multiple bites from a single infected sandfly. Phlebotomus sergenti numbers were strongly correlated with rainfall in the previous winter, but not with numbers of cases or numbers of houses sprayed. It is suggested that Leishmania tropica is at the limit of its range in Kabul and only remains endemic becaus …

A survey for antibodies to arboviruses was done in the human population of the north of Spain (provinces of La Coruña, Orense, Pontevedra, Leon, Asturias). Sera were obtained from 701 persons living in the area. The hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) test showed that 16.5% of the population studied had antibodies to group B arboviruses. All sera were negative for group A and Phlebotomus fever group viruses, as well as for Tahyna and Calovo. No evidence of antibody to tick-borne encephalitis viruses was found. Neutralization tests done with several group B viruses on 56 selected sera with HI anti…

The most prevalent species was P. papatasi (47.12%), followed by P. alexandri (8.41%) and P. salehi (6.25%). Among the collected Phlebotomus species, P. papatasi and P. sergenti are known as the primary vectors of CL a …

Thirty pools from 900 (540 females and 360 males) Phlebotomus perfiliewi sandflies collected during the summer of 2012 in the Fermo area (Marche Region, central Italy) were tested for the presence of Phleboviruses. A nested polymerase chain reaction was performed using degenerated primers amplifying a fragment of the polymerase gene (large segment) and a fragment of the nucleoprotein gene (small segment) of the genus Phlebovirus. One pool was positive for Toscana virus, as expected from results of studies in the area, and six pools were positive for a putative novel Phlebovirus. Virus isolatio…

Three Masai children from Kekonyokie South Location, Kajiado District were diagnosed with visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar). Leishmanial isolates from the patients were characterized as Leishmania donovani sensu lato, by cellulose acetate electrophoresis. Case histories indicated that the disease was acquired locally. A survey of 409 children at 7 local primary schools and one nursery school revealed no additional case. Sandfly surveys using light traps and sticky paper traps recovered 10 species of sandfly, including 2 Phlebotomus species. P. martini was prevalent throughout the area. P. ori…

Chandipura virus, a neurotropic RNA virus transmitted by Phlebotomus sandflies, remains an under-recognised cause of acute paediatric encephalitis in India. The 2024 outbreak, with 245 confirmed cases and 82 deaths, underscores its ongoing public health relevance. This review provides an integrated analysis of CHPV, encompassing its epidemiological distribution in India, host-agent-environment transmission dynamics, molecular and cellular pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnostic modalities, therapeutic options, and vaccine research. Evidence from 1950 to 2025, drawn from peer-reviewed s…

BACKGROUND: Vector sand fly colonies are a critical component of studies aimed at improving the understanding of the neglected tropical disease leishmaniasis and alleviating its global impact. However, among laboratory-colonized arthropod vectors of infectious diseases, the labor-intensive nature of sand fly rearing coupled with the low number of colonies worldwide has generally discouraged the widespread use of sand flies in laboratory settings. Among the different factors associated with the low productivity of sand fly colonies, mite infestations are a significant factor. Sand fly colonies
