There is increasing evidence that panic disorder is a major health problem in the United States. Yet, it is believed that many panic disorder patients do not enter the health care system, and those who do rarely offer a mental health complaint. This study was conducted to determine factors important in the decision of patients with panic disorder to seek health care, where they go for care, and their complaints to physicians. Overall, 44% of patients did not enter the health care system with complaints of either nervousness or panic attacks. Certain factors were found to be important to the pa

Climate change may bring about anxiety, which may be referred to as eco-anxiety. Commonly accepted conceptual or diagnostic criteria for eco-anxiety are currently lacking. Here, we briefly summarize the current literature on climate change and mental illness. We suggest dividing the concept of eco-anxiety into adaptive eco-anxiety and an anxiety disorder where climate change plays a major role. This distinction may be helpful in clinical practice to discern relatively common and potentially healthy eco-anxiety from a disorder causing impairment in daily functioning. Benefits of adaptive eco-an

A considerable number of pregnant women experience fear of childbirth (FOC), characterized by worries and fear of the unpredictable. Despite this, the psychological processes in FOC have received notably little attention. The aim of this study was to advance the understanding by exploring the applicability of the Intolerance of Uncertainty (IU) model on FOC. Anonymous data was collected in a sample of pregnant women (N = 357) with varying levels of FOC. Analyses supported the associations between FOC and all proposed psychological processes: IU, negative problem orientation, positive beliefs a

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to analyze the body sway response in specific phobia (SP) patients and healthy controls while viewing neutral, phobic, and disgusting images.
METHODS: The participants' heart rate (HR) and skin conductance were also recorded during the procedure. Nineteen patients with arachnophobia and 19 healthy volunteers matched by age, gender, and years of education underwent a postural control test on a stabilometric platform.
RESULTS: The platform recorded increased body sway in the SP group when exposed to spider images (SPI). The SP group presented increas

Misophonia is a devastating disorder. It is known as an affective sound-processing disorder characterized by the experience of strong negative emotions (e.g., anger, distress) in response to human sounds such as eating/swallowing/breathing. Other sounds produced by humans but not directly by human bodies can also be misophonic triggers (e.g. pen clicking) or environmental sounds (animal sounds/sounds of machines). The type of aversive triggers is individual. The reaction to trigger sounds can depend on many factors, such as assessment of the sound, personal experience, social context or psycho

BACKGROUND: The current literature on the specific phobia of urinary incontinence is limited, with no specific empirically established model or treatment protocol.
AIMS: This article consists of a case study of formulation-driven cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for phobia of urinary incontinence.
METHOD: Martin attended a total of 12 treatment sessions. The treatment included the development of an idiosyncratic formulation, and the use of well-established cognitive and behavioural treatment strategies from other anxiety disorders.
RESULTS: Both outcome measures and Martin's subjective rep

BACKGROUND: Somatic anxiety patients complain of physical symptoms and exhibit repeated checking behavior. Overgeneralization of fear is a characteristic of anxiety disorders. However, the role of fear in the somatic anxiety patients remains unclear. We hypothesized that somatic anxiety patients have abnormal fear circuits, including the amygdala, hippocampus, thalamus, orbitofrontal cortex and anterior cingulate cortex, which can aggravate physical symptoms.
METHODS: 33 anxiety patients and 25 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. The severity of the anxiety and somatic symptoms was assesse

In his both highly amusing and thrilling story Roald Dahl describes an adventure of his fictive uncle Oswald Hendryk Cornelius, a snobby Englishman and womanizer, suffering from delusional anxiety of infections and hygienic compulsions. Forced by the breakdown of his car in the Sinai desert, he accepts the invitation of a noble Arab to spend the night in his palace, situated like a mirage in the middle of the desert. Oswald is plagued by erotic obsessions at the sight of the beautiful wife as well as the likewise beautiful daughter. The night rewards him with the desired amorous adventure but

Social phobia is a relatively unrecognized disease. This ignorance is partly due to border troubles, as timidity, troubles between the norm and the pathologic, between psychiatry, psychology and sociology. Many other disorders appear to be differential diagnosis and question about nosographic limits of social phobia. After the description of the semiology, the authors suggest a review of differential diagnosis by explaining each diagnostic criterion of social phobia. Then the therapeutic side of the question will be tackled, mainly about cognitive-behavioural therapy and drugs used in France.

Conscription entails many adjustment difficulties for the young soldier. When anxiety is sufficiently severe to impair performance and make discharge a possibility, a brief course of cognitive-behavioral therapy can rapidly restore the soldier to full functioning. This article explains the theoretical basis for such an approach, and describes three cases.

BACKGROUND: Although the frequency of social phobia is high among alcoholic patients, this anxiety disorder is often neglected because treatment tends to be focused exclusively on alcohol dependence.
METHODS: A total of 300 hospitalized alcoholic patients were interviewed using Structured Clinical Interview for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition and Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale as well a questionnaire to check the use of medication for social phobia among alcoholics and the relationship between social phobia and alcohol use.
RESULTS: A prevalence of 3
