Metallophosphide poisoning, a rising public health problem in Ethiopia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Metallophosphide poisoning, mainly due to aluminum phosphide and zinc phosphide, is a growing public health problem in developing countries associated with a high mortality rate, including in Ethiopia, where it is used a fumigant for stored grains and agricultural commodities. Ethiopia lacks a well-organized poison control center, making it difficult to obtain primary data on metallophosphide poisoning cases and outcomes. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to determine the pooled prevalence and mortality rate from metallophosphide poisoning in Ethiopia. METHODS: As of

Tris(2-chloroethyl) Phosphate Exerts Hepatotoxic Impacts on Zebrafish by Disrupting Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Thyroid and Gut-Liver Axes.

The ubiquitous environmental presence of tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) poses a potential threat to animals; however, little is known about its hepatotoxicity. In this study, the effects of TCEP exposure (0.5 and 5.0 μg/L for 28 days) on liver health and the potential underlying toxification mechanisms were investigated in zebrafish. Our results demonstrated that TCEP exposure led to hepatic tissue lesions and resulted in significant alterations in liver-injury-specific markers. Moreover, TCEP-exposed fish had significantly lower levels of thyrotropin-releasing hormone and thyroid-stimul

Role of automated red blood cell exchange in the treatment of aluminum phosphide poisoning: A case report and review of the literature.

Aluminum phosphide (AIP) is a fumigant commonly used in agricultural areas. AIP is frequently misused for suicidal purposes because it is easily accessible. AIP poisoning causes severe metabolic acidosis, resistant hypotension, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and multiorgan failure with cardiogenic shock. Despite supportive management and intensive care, most patients die following AIP ingestion because there is no specific antidote. In this case report we present a 15-year-old female who presented with vomiting, coma and epigastric pain. She developed resistant metabolic acidosis and hyp

Effect of Phosphorus Precursor, Reduction Temperature, and Support on the Catalytic Properties of Nickel Phosphide Catalysts in Continuous-Flow Reductive Amination of Ethyl Levulinate.

Levulinic acid and its esters (e.g., ethyl levulinate, EL) are platform chemicals derived from biomass feedstocks that can be converted to a variety of valuable compounds. Reductive amination of levulinates with primary amines and H2 over heterogeneous catalysts is an attractive method for the synthesis of N-alkyl-5-methyl-2-pyrrolidones, which are an environmentally friendly alternative to the common solvent N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP). In the present work, the catalytic properties of the different nickel phosphide catalysts supported on SiO2 and Al2O3 were studied in a reductive amination o

Wheat pill poisoning: complications and management.

The urotensin II/urotensin receptor (UII/UT) system can mediate inflammatory liver injury in acute liver failure (ALF); however; the related mechanism is not clear. In this study, we confirmed that lipopolysaccharide/D-galactosamine (LPS/D-GalN) induced up-regulation of liver interferon regulatory factor 3 (IRF3) in ALF mice, whereas the UT antagonist urantide inhibited the up-regulated liver IRF3. LPS stimulation induced IRF3 transcription and nuclear translocation and promoted the secretion of interleukin-6 (IL-6), interferon (IFN)-β, and IFN-γ in Kupffer cells (KCs); these effects in LPS-st

DNA Analogues Modified at the Nonlinking Positions of Phosphorus.

Chemically modified oligonucleotides are being developed as a new class of medicines for curing conditions that previously remained untreatable. Three primary classes of therapeutic oligonucleotides are single-stranded antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs), double stranded small interfering RNAs (siRNAs), and oligonucleotides that induce exon skipping. Recently, ASOs, siRNAs, and exon skipping oligonucleotides have been approved for patients with unmet medical needs, and many other candidates are being tested in late stage clinical trials. In coming years, therapeutic oligonucleotides may match th

Application of Trimethylgermanyl-Substituted Bisphosphine Ligands with Enhanced Dispersion Interactions to Copper-Catalyzed Hydroboration of Disubstituted Alkenes.

We report the incorporation of large substituents based on heavy main-group elements that are atypical in ligand architectures to enhance dispersion interactions and, thereby, enhance enantioselectivity. Specifically, we prepared the chiral biaryl bisphosphine ligand (TMG-SYNPHOS) containing 3,5-bis(trimethylgermanyl)phenyl groups on phosphorus and applied this ligand to the challenging problem of enantioselective hydrofunctionalization reactions of 1,1-disubtituted alkenes. Indeed, TMG-SYNPHOS forms a copper complex that catalyzes hydroboration of 1,1-disubtituted alkenes with high levels of

Ischemic stroke as a rare manifestation of aluminum phosphide poisoning: a case report.

Aluminum phosphide (AlP) is a solid fumigant which is widely used for a suicide attempt in Iran. Although neurologic symptoms are commonly reported, cerebrovascular stenosis is rare in AlP poisoning. We described ischemic stroke as a delayed complication of AlP intoxication. A 30-year-old man was admitted because of sudden onset left side hemiplegia, 11 days after intentional ingestion of three rice tablets. Investigations revealed in situ thrombosis in right middle cerebral artery (MCA) while other causes of stroke in young adults were excluded. Ischemic stroke should be considered as a delay

Nickel(II) complexes containing a pyrrole-diphosphine pincer ligand.

A new pincer ligand, (P(2)(Ph)Pyr)(-), based on the anion of 2,5-bis[(diphenylphosphino)methyl]pyrrole has been prepared in four steps from pyrrole. The ligand undergoes oxidation to diphosphine oxide under ambient conditions and was therefore isolated as its borane adduct, H(P(2)(Ph)Pyr)·2BH(3) (2). Delivery of the ligand to nickel(II) was accomplished by the direct reaction of NiCl(2) with 2 in the presence of Et(2)NH to afford [NiCl(P(2)(Ph)Pyr)]. Salt metathesis reactions of the chloro complex afford new compounds including [Ni(CH(3))(P(2)(Ph)Pyr)] and [Ni(NCCH(3))(P(2)(Ph)Pyr)](OTf). In a

Allenylphosphonates/allenylphosphine oxides as intermediates/precursors for intramolecular cyclization leading to phosphorus-based indenes, indenones, benzofurans, and isochromenes.

Utilizing internally available functional groups, a simple protocol for the efficient synthesis of phosphorus-based indenes, indenones, benzofurans, and isochromenes via intramolecular cyclization of allene intermediates/precursors is generated; the latter intermediates/precursors are conveniently obtained through aldehyde-, alkylidene-, and hydroxyl-functionalized propargyl alcohols and P(III)-Cl precursors. The structures of key products have been unequivocally confirmed by X-ray crystallography.

The decomposition of alpha-aminophosphine oxides to phosphonic acid derivatives (PIII).

Aminophosphine oxides and aminophosphonates are, in general, very stable compounds. However, following phosphorus-carbon bond cleavage in aqueous acidic media these compounds sometimes decompose to phosphonic acids derivatives (P(III)). Despite some controversy in the literature, careful analysis supported by theoretical studies leads to the conclusion that decomposition to P(III) derivatives proceeds via an elimination reaction.

Origin of stereoinduction by chiral aminophosphane phosphinite ligands in enantioselective catalysis: asymmetric hydroformylation.

The origin of stereoinduction by chiral aminophosphane phosphinite (AMPP) ligands in asymmetric hydroformylation was investigated with a theoretical approach. The roles of the stereogenic center at the aminophosphane phosphorus atom (NP*) and of the chirality of the backbone were analyzed by considering three experimentally tested cases: 1) P-stereogenic yielding high ee, 2) P-nonstereogenic yielding low ee, and 3) P-stereogenic yielding low ee. We succeeded in reproducing the experimentally observed trends for the three studied AMPP ligands. Our results indicated that alkene insertion into th

Coupling of metal containing homing devices to liposomes via a maleimide linker: use of TCEP to stabilize thiol-groups without scavenging metals.

Liposomes for drug delivery are often prepared with maleimide groups on the distal end of PEG to enable coupling of homing devices, such as antibodies, or other proteins. EDTA is used to stabilize the thiol group in the homing device for attachment to the maleimide. However, when using a homing device that contains a metal, EDTA inactivates this by scavenging of the metal. Holo-transferrin (Tf) containing two iron atoms (Fe(3+)), has a much higher affinity for the Tf receptor than apo-Tf (which does not contain any Fe(3+)). To couple Tf to a liposome, the introduction of a thiol group is neces

Laboratory trials of five rodenticides for the control of Mesocricetus auratus Waterhouse.

The efficacy of five rodenticides for use in bait against the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus Waterhouse) was investigated in the laboratory. The species proved to be resistant to warfarin (up to 0.5%) and difenacoum (0.005%), but brodifacoum (0.005%) gave complete mortality after three days' feeding. Calciferol (0.1%), though toxic, was significantly unpalatable. Zinc phosphide (5.0%) presented in a choice test for two days against unpoisoned feed gave 100% mortality, and appears to be the most suitable of these compounds for the control of M. auratus in the field.

Highly Stable Biotemplated InP/ZnSe/ZnS Quantum Dots for In Situ Bacterial Monitoring.

Despite their unique optical and electrical characteristics, traditional semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) made of heavy metals or carbon are not ideally suited for biomedical applications. Cytotoxicity and environmental concerns are key limiting factors affecting the adoption of QDs from laboratory research to real-world medical applications. Recently, advanced InP/ZnSe/ZnS QDs have emerged as alternatives to traditional QDs due to their low toxicity and optical properties; however, bioconjugation has remained a challenge due to surface chemistry limitations that can lead to instability in aqu
