Single pulse electrical stimulation in white matter modulates iEEG visual responses in human early visual cortex.

INTRODUCTION: Electrical stimulation is increasingly used to modulate brain networks for clinical purposes. The basic unit of neurostimulation, a single electrical pulse, can travel through white matter to influence connected neuronal populations. However, the mechanisms by which it influences connected populations is not well understood: stimulation may excite, inhibit, or add noise to neuronal population activity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, we investigated how single pulses modulate the neuronal processing of images in a well-controlled visual paradigm. In two human subjects impl

No effect of rhythmic visual stimulation on experimental pain perception.

Brain oscillations, particularly in the alpha, beta, and gamma bands, have been implicated in pain perception through correlational studies. Rhythmic visual stimulation (RVS) offers a noninvasive method to experimentally manipulate these oscillations and examine their potential role in pain perception. We conducted 2 within-participant experiments to assess whether RVS is associated with changes in both acute pain perception and pain-related neural oscillations. In experiment 1, 41 participants received brief (13 seconds) RVS at alpha (10 Hz), beta (18 Hz), or gamma (42 Hz) frequencies, or an

Dissecting the Causal Role of Early Inferior Frontal Activation in Reading.

Cognitive models of reading assume that speech production occurs after visual and phonological processing of written words. This traditional view is at odds with more recent magnetoencephalography studies showing that the left posterior inferior frontal cortex (pIFC) classically associated with spoken production responds to print at 100-150 ms after word-onset, almost simultaneously with posterior brain regions for visual and phonological processing. Yet the theoretical significance of this fast neural response remains open to date. We used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to investigat

Differential Effects of Cerebellar tDCS on Sequential Mentalizing.

The cerebellum has been increasingly recognized for its role in social cognition, particularly in mentalizing processes. A way to measure mentalizing is the picture sequencing task, a well-established measure of social action sequencing during mentalizing of other’s beliefs. Recent studies have shown that cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation can affect social sequence processing in adults, however, the effects of different types of stimulation remain unclear. Therefore, in this study, we examined the effects of a novel and more focal montage of cerebellar tDCS on the picture sequ

Intact sensorimotor rhythm abilities but altered audiovisual integration in cochlear implant users.

Perception of rhythm significantly impacts various aspects of daily life, including engaging with music, discerning speech prosody nuances, and coordinating physical activities like walking and sports. Numerous studies in cognitive sciences have highlighted that human rhythmic synchronization is more precise when responding to auditory rhythmic stimuli than to visual ones when the timing cues are identical. However, deaf individuals were shown to display a heightened proficiency in synchronizing their movements with visual timing cues, outperforming hearing controls (HC). Furthermore, it was d

A comparison of vibrotactile patterns in an early warning system for obstacle detection using a haptic vest.

Technical devices can enhance safety by warning people of unrecognized obstacles, particularly in traffic, wilderness, and industrial settings. This study aims to identify the most effective vibrotactile stimuli for localization tasks by developing and evaluating various types of vibrotactile alerts presented through a tactile vest with visual patterns. The study design involved comparing the time and consistency of interpreting visual stimuli and subsequent tactile stimuli. The tactile stimuli included: a 'point' vibration on the left or right side of the back, a 'column' pattern of five vibr

Delayed knowledge transfer: Cross-modal knowledge transfer from delayed stimulus to EEG for continuous attention detection based on spike-represented EEG signals.

Decoding visual and auditory stimuli from brain activities, such as electroencephalography (EEG), offers promising advancements for enhancing machine-to-human interaction. However, effectively representing EEG signals remains a significant challenge. In this paper, we introduce a novel Delayed Knowledge Transfer (DKT) framework that employs spiking neurons for attention detection, using our experimental EEG dataset. This framework extracts patterns from audiovisual stimuli to model brain responses in EEG signals, while accounting for inherent response delays. By aligning audiovisual features w

Sound-Induced Flash Illusions Support Cortex Hyperexcitability in Fibromyalgia.

OBJECTIVES: Fibromyalgia (FM) is characterized by spontaneous chronic widespread pain in combination with hyperalgesia to pressure stimuli. Sound-induced flash illusions (SIFIs) reflect cross-modal interactions between senses allowing to assess a visual cortical hoerexcitability (VCH) by evaluating the fission and fusion illusions disruption. The aims of the present study were to explore whether SIFIs are perceived differently in patients with fibromyalgia as compared to healthy controls (HCs) and how migraine affects fission and fusion illusions in fibromyalgia. METHODS: A single flash (F) a

No effect of triple-pulse TMS medial to intraparietal sulcus on online correction for target perturbations during goal-directed hand and foot reaches.

Posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is central to sensorimotor processing for goal-directed hand and foot movements. Yet, the specific role of PPC subregions in these functions is not clear. Previous human neuroimaging and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) work has suggested that PPC lateral to the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) is involved in directing the arm, shaping the hand, and correcting both finger-shaping and hand trajectory during movement. The lateral localization of these functions agrees with the comparably lateral position of the hand and fingers within the motor and somatosensory

High-Definition Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Improves Verb Recovery in Aphasic Patients Depending on Current Intensity.

High-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) is a variant of tDCS, which produces more focal stimulation, delimiting brain current flow to a defined region compared to conventional tDCS. To date, only one study has been conducted to investigate HD-tDCS effects on language recovery in aphasia. Here, we aimed to assess the effects of cathodal HD-tDCS on verb naming by comparing two current intensities: 1 vs 2 mA. In a double-blinded cross over study, two groups of 10 aphasic individuals were submitted to active cathodal HD-tDCS and sham stimulation over the right homolog of

No Effect of cathodal tDCS of the posterior parietal cortex on parafoveal preprocessing of words.

The present study investigated the functional role of the posterior parietal cortex during the processing of parafoveally presented letter strings. To this end, we simultaneously presented two letter strings (word or pseudoword) - one foveally and one parafoveally - and asked the participants to indicate the presence of a word (i.e., lexical decision flanker task). We applied cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the posterior parietal cortex in order to establish causal links between brain activity and lexical decision performance (accuracy and latency). The results ind

Medial prefrontal cortex involvement in aesthetic appreciation of paintings: a tDCS study.

Among the brain regions involved in the aesthetic evaluation of paintings, the prefrontal cortex seems to play a pivotal role. In particular, consistent neuroimaging evidence indicates that activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (mainly in the left hemisphere) and in medial and orbital sectors of the prefrontal cortex is linked to viewing aesthetically pleasing images. In this study, we focused on the contribution of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) in mediating aesthetic decisions about paintings. We found that enhancing excitability in this region via anodal tDCS led participants

A randomized controlled trial to test efficacy of digital enhancements of storybooks in support of narrative comprehension and word learning.

Experiments with film-like story presentations have been found to be beneficial in supporting children's story comprehension and word learning. The main goal of the current study was to disentangle the effects of visual and auditory enhancements in digital books. Participants were 99 typically developing children (41 boys and 58 girls) aged 4-6 years from two public kindergartens in Bursa, Turkey. A randomized controlled trial was conducted with a control group and four experimental conditions that included all possible combinations: static illustrations with and without music/sounds and anima

Wireless optoelectronic photometers for monitoring neuronal dynamics in the deep brain.

Capabilities for recording neural activity in behaving mammals have greatly expanded our understanding of brain function. Some of the most sophisticated approaches use light delivered by an implanted fiber-optic cable to optically excite genetically encoded calcium indicators and to record the resulting changes in fluorescence. Physical constraints induced by the cables and the bulk, size, and weight of the associated fixtures complicate studies on natural behaviors, including social interactions and movements in environments that include obstacles, housings, and other complex features. Here,

Auditory and visual naming tests for children.

Assessment of naming in children has been hampered by the use of tests that were developed, either to assess naming in adults or to assess related verbal functions in children. We developed comparable visual naming test (VNT) and auditory description naming (ANT) specifically for children. We collected normative data, not only for accuracy, typically the sole performance measure, but also for response time (RT) and reliance on phonemic cuing. The normative sample consisted of 200 typically developing children, ages 6-15, with 40 children per 2-year age group (6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13, and 14-15)

Using sound to unmask losses disguised as wins in multiline slot machines.

Losses disguised as wins (LDWs) are slot machine outcomes where participants bet on multiple lines and win back less than their wager. Despite losing money, the machine celebrates these outcomes with reinforcing sights and sounds. Here, we sought to show that psychophysically and psychologically, participants treat LDWs as wins, but that we could expose LDWs as losses by using negative sounds as feedback. 157 participants were allocated into one of three conditions: a standard sound condition where LDWs, despite being losses, are paired with winning sights and sounds; a silent condition, where

The effects of listener training on discriminative control by elements of compound stimuli in children with disabilities.

The purpose of the current study was to assess whether the establishment of listener relations with compound stimuli as samples and comparisons would lead to the emergence of: (1) speaker behavior in the form of tacts of the compound stimuli; (2) listener and tact responses for untaught compounds; and (3) listener and tact responses for the isolated properties of compounds. Participants were four boys diagnosed with autism and one diagnosed with intellectual disability. We taught participants to select among three compound comparisons consisting of combinations of shapes and patterns in the pr

Very early processing of emotional words revealed in temporoparietal junctions of both hemispheres by EEG and TMS.

We investigate the contribution of both hemispheres in a lateralised lexical decision paradigm with emotional and neutral words in healthy volunteers. In a first experiment, high-density EEG analysis using source imaging methods revealed early specific participation of the temporoparietal junctions (TPJ) in both hemispheres for the detection of words. Then, in an event-related transcranial magnetic stimulation experiment with the same task, the disruption of left or right TPJ compared with a control stimulation over the vertex showed a slowing that is more pronounced when words are emotional a

Balls to the wall: how acoustic information from a ball in motion guides interceptive movement in people with Parkinson's disease.

Previous research has shown that Parkinson's disease (PD) patients can increase the speed of their movement when catching a moving ball compared to when reaching for a static ball (Majsak et al., 1998). A recent model proposed by Redgrave et al. (2010) explains this phenomenon with regard to the dichotomic organization of motor loops in the basal ganglia circuitry and the role of sensory micro-circuitries in the control of goal-directed actions. According to this model, external visual information that is relevant to the required movement can induce a switch from a habitual control of movement
