Distinct effects of epirubicin, cisplatin and cyclophosphamide on ovarian somatic cells of prepuberal ovaries.

Thyrotropin (TSH) is classically known to be regulated by negative feedback from thyroid hormones and stimulated by thyrotropin-releasing ho … nt glycosylations and PT-TSH forms macro-TSH complexes in the periphery and has a longer half-life. Photoperiodism affects LH levels in animals via decreased melatonin causing increased TSH-β subunit expression and induction of deiodinase-2 (DIO-2) in the brain. Mammals need a light stimulus carried into the suprachiasmatic nucleus (which is a circadian clock …

Melatonin adjusts the expression pattern of clock genes in the suprachiasmatic nucleus and induces antidepressant-like effect in a mouse model of seasonal affective disorder.

Recently, we have shown that C57BL/6J mice exhibit depression-like behavior under short photoperiod and suggested them as an animal model for investigating seasonal affective disorder (SAD). In this study, we tested if manipulations of the circadian clock with melatonin treatment could effectively modify depression-like and anxiety-like behaviors and brain serotonergic system in C57BL/6J mice. Under short photoperiods (8-h light/16-h dark), daily melatonin treatments 2 h before light offset have significantly altered the 24-h patterns of mRNA expression of circadian clock genes (per1, per2, bm…

Melatonin stimulates the release of growth hormone and prolactin by a possible induction of the expression of frog growth hormone-releasing peptide and its related peptide-2 in the amphibian hypothalamus.

We recently identified a novel hypothalamic neuropeptide stimulating GH release in bullfrogs and termed it frog GH-releasing peptide (fGRP). … x bullfrogs increased dose-dependently their expressions. The expression of fGRP precursor mRNA was photoperiodically controlled and increased under short-day photoperiods, when the nocturnal duration of melatonin secretion increases. To clarify the mode of melatonin action on the induction of fGRP and fGRP-RPs, we further demonstrated the expression of Mel(1 …

Phenotypic differences in reentrainment behavior and sensitivity to nighttime light pulses in siberian hamsters.

Spontaneous reentrainment to phase shifts of the photocycle is a fundamental property of all circadian systems. Siberian hamsters are, howev … rt of the night. The phenotypic variation in reentrainment responses is similar to the variation in photoperiodic responsiveness previously reported for these 2 colonies. Phenotypic variation in both traits is due to underlying differences in circadian organization and suggests a common genetic basis for reentrainment responses and photoperiodic responsivenes …

Gonadal responses of the male Syrian hamster to programmed infusions of melatonin are sensitive to signal duration and frequency but not to signal phase nor to lesions of the suprachiasmatic nuclei.

This study investigated the roles of the melatonin signal and the circadian system in the induction of photoperiodic responses in the male Syrian hamster. Pinealectomized animals received programmed s.c. infusions of saline or melatonin. Saline infusions for 10 h or melatonin for 4 h during the night had no effect on the reproductive axis whereas nightly 10-h infusions of melatonin induced gonadal atrophy. Animals that received 10-h infusions of melatonin arranged such that consecutive daily signals were delivered alternately during the day and night also exhibited gonadal atrophy, whereas mel…

Artificial Light at Night (ALAN) causes size-dependent effects on intertidal fish decision-making.

Artificial Light at Night (ALAN) alters cycles of day and night, potentially modifying species' behavior. We assessed whether exposure to ALAN influences decision-making (directional swimming) in an intertidal rockfish (Girella laevisifrons) from the Southeastern Pacific. Using a Y-maze, we examined if exposure to ALAN or natural day/night conditions for one week affected the number of visits and time spent in three Y-maze compartments: dark and lit arms ("safe" and "risky" conditions, respectively) and a neutral "non-decision" area. The results showed that fish maintained in natural day/night

Role of Melatonin in Cancer: Effect on Clock Genes.

The circadian clock is a regulatory system, with a periodicity of approximately 24 h, that generates rhythmic changes in many physiological processes. Increasing evidence links chronodisruption with aberrant functionality in clock gene expression, resulting in multiple diseases, including cancer. In this context, tumor cells have an altered circadian machinery compared to normal cells, which deregulates the cell cycle, repair mechanisms, energy metabolism and other processes. Melatonin is the main hormone produced by the pineal gland, whose production and secretion oscillates in accordance wit

Glycogen metabolism is required for optimal cyanobacterial growth in the rapid light-dark cycle of low-Earth orbit.

Some designs for bioregenerative life support systems to enable human space missions incorporate cyanobacteria for removal of carbon dioxide, generation of oxygen, and treatment of wastewater, as well as providing a source of nutrition. In this study, we examined the effects of the short light-dark (LD) cycle of low-Earth orbit on algal and cyanobacterial growth, approximating conditions on the International Space Station, which orbits Earth roughly every 90 min. We found that growth of green algae was similar in both normal 12 h light:12 h dark (12 h:12 h LD) and 45':45' LD cycles. Three dive

Restricting feeding to dark phase fails to entrain circadian activity and energy expenditure oscillations in Pitx3-mutant Aphakia mice.

Metabolic homeostasis is under circadian regulation to adapt energy requirements to light-dark cycles. Feeding cycles are regulated by photic stimuli reaching the suprachiasmatic nucleus via retinohypothalamic axons and by nutritional information involving dopaminergic neurotransmission. Previously, we reported that Pitx3-mutant Aphakia mice with altered development of the retinohypothalamic tract and the dopaminergic neurons projecting to the striatum, are resistant to locomotor and metabolic entrainment by time-restricted feeding. Continuous inactivation of human adenoviruses in water by a novel g-C3N4/WO3/biochar memory photocatalyst under light-dark cycles.

Viruses transmitted by water have raised considerable concerns for public health. A novel memory photocatalyst of g-C3N4/WO3/biochar was successfully developed for effective inactivation of human adenoviruses (HAdVs) in water, in which WO3 as an electron-storage reservoir and biochar as an electron shuttle is employed to synergistically improve photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4. The tertiary composite exhibited continuous photocatalytic performance for HAdVs inactivation without regrowth in water under light-dark cycles, i.e., ∼3.9-log inactivation under 6-h visible light irradiation and an ad

Roles of Direct Photoreception and the Internal Circadian Oscillator in the Regulation of Melatonin Secretion in the Pineal Organ of the Domestic Turkey: A Novel In Vitro Clock and Calendar Model.

The regulation of melatonin secretion in the avian pineal organ is highly complex and shows prominent interspecies differences. The aim of this study was to determine the roles of direct photoreception and the internal oscillator in the regulation of melatonin secretion in the pineal organ of the domestic turkey. The pineal organs were collected from 12-, 13- and 14-week-old female turkeys reared under a 12 L:12 D cycle with the photophase from 07.00 to 19.00, and were incubated in superfusion culture for 3-6 days. The cultures were subjected to different light conditions including 12 L:12 D c

Environmental and Endogenous Control of Cortical Microtubule Orientation.

Plant growth requires a tight coordination of cell shape and anisotropic expansion. Owing to their immobility, plant cells determine body architecture through the orientation of cell division and cell expansion. Microtubule cytoskeleton represents a versatile cellular structure essential for coordinating flexible cell morphogenesis. Previous studies have identified a large number of microtubule-associated regulators that control microtubule dynamics; however, the mechanisms by which microtubule reorientation responds to exogenous and environmental stimuli are largely unknown. Synchronization by low-amplitude light-dark cycles of 24-hour pineal and plasma melatonin rhythms of hatchling European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris).

In young European starlings, as in other avian species, high-amplitude 24-hr rhythms in plasma and pineal melatonin are already present around the time of hatching. In chickens this rhythmicity results at least partly from the light sensitivity of the melatonin-producing and -secreting system. In contrast to the chicken, the starling is a hole-nesting bird, and it seemed questionable whether the low light intensities in the nest are sufficient to synchronize perinatal melatonin rhythms. We therefore exposed starling eggs to light cycles roughly simulating those measured in nest-boxes, i.e., an

Effects of wintering under methylmercury exposure on spring reproductive onset in song sparrows (Melospiza melodia).

Exposure to methylmercury (MeHg) on breeding grounds may have numerous deleterious effects on birds, including neurotoxicity, disruption of hormones, and impaired reproduction. But it is unknown if MeHg exposure on wintering grounds can carry over and produce negative effects on the following spring breeding seasonal transition. To evaluate this, we exposed male captive song sparrows (Melospiza melodia) to environmentally relevant levels of dietary MeHg for 3 months during winter. We then photostimulated the birds with a long-day photoperiod and observed them for 21 days post-exposure. Contrar…

Illuminated nights accelerate the migration-linked phenology in a passerine finch redheaded bunting.

The excessive use of artificial light is altering the natural light-dark cycles, consequently impacting animal behavior and physiology. Dim light at night (dLAN) can disrupt migratory patterns, alter hormone levels, and impact breeding success in birds. The present research aims to address the effects of dLAN on the metabolic and reproductive tissues of migratory redheaded bunting (Emberiza bruniceps). For this, buntings under short winter-like days (10L:14D) were exposed to either dark nights (D = 0.00014 W/m2) or dLAN (D = 0.058 W/m2), and their locomotor activity, body mass, fat score, food

Light-dark influence on enkephalinase activity in hypothalamus and pituitary.

OBJECTIVES: Enkephalins functions are partly modulated by enkephalinases especially membrane-bound alanyl aminopeptidase (EC-3.4.11.2) considered as the major enkephalin-degrading enzyme in brain. The analysis of its activity in standard and non-standard light/dark conditions may help the understanding of the regulatory mechanisms of enkephalins. METHODS: Enkephalinase activity was determined fluorometrically, using an arylamide derivative as substrate, in hypothalamus and pituitary of adult male rats, in a standard 12:12 h light/dark cycle; samples were collected at 10:00 h, 13:00 h and 16:0
