PURPOSE: Cardiac sarcoidosis (CS) is a potentially life-threatening condition, and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) is highly sensitive for detecting myocardial inflammation. However, corticosteroid therapy may alter myocardial metabolism, complicating the interpretation of FDG PET. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of corticosteroid therapy on physiological myocardial FDG uptake and assess the utility of fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and free fatty acids (FFA) in distinguishing physiological from pathological uptake.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospective

The paraphyletic group referred to as fishes represents several extant and extinct classes that demonstrate the greatest diversity and abundance of any of the vertebrates on the Earth. Anatomically and physiologically, the systems of fish are comparable to those of other vertebrates and the thyroid and hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis are no exceptions. This article reviews the current literature on thyroid endocrinology of elasmobranch and teleost fishes with an emphasis on relevance to clinical management and highlights some of the anatomic and physiologic differences of the HPT axi

A case of intraoperative cyanosis in a patient with a common atrioventricular canal palliated with a pulmonary artery (PA) band is presented. The patient's physiology was consistent with cyanosis due to inadequate pulmonary blood flow, and responded quickly to typical interventions used for a hypercyanotic episode in a patient with unrepaired Tetralogy of Fallot. Differences and similarities in the physiology of PA banding compared with Tetralogy of Fallot are presented, including a rationale for treatment options for hemodynamic decompensation occurring in the setting of anesthesia and surger

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate neonatal outcomes in congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) after implementation of new preoperative management guidelines based on physiologic fetal-to-neonatal transition.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective single-center study of neonates with CDH was performed. Data were collected from 48 infants treated prior to new guideline implementation (Epoch 1) and 13 patients treated after implementation (Epoch 2). We hypothesized that rates of extracorporeal life support (ECLS) and inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) utilization would decrease after guideline implementation.
RESULTS: Neon

Renovascular hypertension is a syndrome which encompasses the physiological response of the kidney to changes in renal blood flow and renal perfusion pressure. Such physiological changes can occur with renal artery occlusion irrespective of the severity of the lesion. We have analyzed hypertensive patients with mild renal artery stenosis and compared them to patients with no stenosis. Renal vein renin sampling from catheterization of the renal vein was performed in all these patients. Patients with mild stenosis had higher renal vein renin ratio (3.01 ± 1.5) than the patients with no stenosis

BACKGROUND: Drugs commonly used to sedate non-human primates for physiological sample collection can affect the metabolic system and alter rates of glucose metabolism. This study was designed to compare the physiological and metabolic effects of ketamine/diazepam, telazol, and ketamine/dexmedetomidine.
METHODS: Seven female rhesus monkeys underwent intravenous glucose tolerance testing under each of three anesthesia conditions. Blood glucose, insulin, physiological parameters, and sedation characteristics were measured and recorded.
RESULTS: Glucose and insulin values were both significantly

We have tested the hypothesis that physiological puerperal hyperprolactinaemia may be secondary to reduced hypothalamic dopaminergic inhibition of prolactin (PRL) release. Nine post-partum females with physiological hyperprolactinaemia (aged 19-40 years; mean basal PRL +/- SE, 2099 +/- 257 mU/1, range 1002-3762 mU/1) were studied and results compared with fourteen normoprolactinaemic females (basal PRL less than 400 mU/1; aged 18-36 years). Puerperal hyperprolactinaemic females showed a reduced TSH response to dopamine (DA) receptor blockade with metoclopramide (10 mg i.v.) compared with norma

Driver drowsiness contributes to 10-20% of motor vehicle crashes. To reduce crash risk, ideally drivers would be aware of the drowsy state and cease driving. The extent to which drivers can accurately identify sleepiness remains under much debate. We systematically examined whether individuals are aware of sleepiness while driving, and whether this accurately reflects driving impairment, using meta-analyses and narrative review. Within this scope, there is high variability in measures of subjective sleepiness, driving performance and physiologically-derived drowsiness, and statistical analyses

Being ostracized is a stressful experience that affects behavioral and physiological reactivity in adults. However, evidence regarding its impact early in life remains limited. This study investigated whether inclusion or exclusion during a ball-tossing game influenced physiological and behavioral reactivity in 8-month-old infants (N = 59; 24 girls and 35 boys). It also explored whether parent-infant interaction dynamics and parental mind-attuned comments modulate infants' physiological responses, fostering greater adaptation to the social context. Results highlighted that excluded infants sho

Endothelial cells (ECs) experience shear stress associated with blood flow. Such shear stress regulates endothelial function by altering cell physiology. Since most cell culture protocols and media compositions are designed for static cultures and experiments with ECs are predominantly conducted under these non-physiological conditions, a model for culturing ECs under flow conditions is developed, which more closely mimics their physiological environment. This approach also enables the isolation of EVs while minimizing FCS-derived contaminants. In this study, a comprehensive assessment of how

Culture model systems that can recapitulate the anatomy and physiology of reproductive organs, such as three-dimensional (3D) organoid culture systems, limit the cost and welfare concerns associated with a research animal colony and provide alternative approaches to study specific processes in humans and animals. These 3D models facilitate a greater understanding of the physiological role of individual cell types and their interactions than can be accomplished with traditional monolayer culture systems. Furthermore, 3D culture systems allow for the examination of specific cellular, molecular,

A physiological analysis of the articulatory function of 16 adults with multiple sclerosis (MS) was performed using lip and tongue transduction systems. Sixteen nonneurologically impaired adults, matched for age, gender, and education, served as controls. The MS speakers demonstrated patterns of tongue function that were significantly different from those of the control speakers. Specifically, the MS speakers were found to have significantly reduced tongue strength, endurance, and rate of repetitive movements. In addition, preclinical signs of lingual dysfunction were evident in nondysarthric

The presumed "physiologic activity" of normal glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), i.e. activity assayed in the presence of physiologic concentrations of ATP, 2,3-diphosphoglycerate, glucose 6-phosphate, NADP and NADPH in the normal red cells, is comparable to shunt pathway activity of intact normal red cells. In contrast, the presumed "physiologic activity" of G6PD variants associated with enzyme deficiency (Gd A- and Gd Mediterranean) is one order of magnitude higher than actual shunt pathway activity of the variant red cells. The difference of kinetic parameters of the enzyme in artifi

BACKGROUND: Following traumatic brain injury (TBI), optimization of cerebral physiology is recommended to promote more favourable patient outcomes. Accompanying pain and agitation are commonly treated with sedative and analgesic agents, such as opioids. However, the impact of opioids on certain aspects of cerebral physiology is not well established.
OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review of the evidence on the effect of opioids on cerebral physiology in TBI during acute care.
METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in five electronic databases for articles published in En

OBJECTIVE: Patients with uncontrolled epilepsy are at high risk for sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP), which likely results from a pathological, seizure-induced disruption of vital physiological systems. The objective of this study was to characterize seizure-induced physiological dysfunction leading to death in SSKcnj16-/- rats and determine the importance of time of day of seizures regarding mortality rates.
METHODS: Male and female SSKcnj16-/- rats were surgically implanted with an arterial pressure telemeter and chronically housed in a custom plethysmograph. This setup allowed f

PURPOSE: Preterm infants weighing less than 1500 g routinely undergo a series of eye examinations to screen for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). While these examinations are important for the prevention of blindness, infants may suffer adverse physiologic events during and after the examination. The procedure includes administration of mydriatic eye drops that may be absorbed systemically and physical manipulation of the eye that is accompanied by stress and pain. The purpose of the study was to monitor changes in infant health status and adverse physiologic events in the 2 days after ROP eye

BACKGROUND: Intracoronary acetylcholine (ACh) provocation test and coronary physiological assessment are useful interventional diagnostic procedures for evaluating ischemia with no obstructive coronary arteries (INOCA). However, the appropriate sequential order of the diagnostic procedures has been a matter of debate. We investigated the impact of preceding ACh provocation on following coronary physiological assessment.
METHODS: Patients suspected of INOCA underwent invasive coronary physiological assessment using thermodilution method and were divided into two groups according to the impleme

Testosterone deficiency is associated with poor prognosis among patients with chronic heart failure (HF). Physiological testosterone improves the exercise capacity of patients with HF. In this study, we evaluated whether treatment with physiological testosterone contributes to anti-fibrogenesis by modifying calcium homeostasis in cardiac fibroblasts and we studied the underlying mechanisms. Nitric oxide (NO) analyses, calcium (Ca2+) fluorescence, and Western blotting were performed in primary isolated rat cardiac fibroblasts with or without (control cells) testosterone (10, 100, 1,000 nmol/L)
