Acupuncture for treatment of noncyclic breast pain: a pilot study.

Noncyclic breast pain is a common breast disorder prompting women to seek medical evaluation. We aimed to perform a pilot study on the relief of noncyclic breast pain using acupuncture. Thirty-seven women seen at a diagnostic breast clinic between April 2003 and January 2009 were enrolled. Treatment consisted of four acupuncture sessions over two weeks, with three months of follow-up. Response to treatment was measured with use of a breast pain questionnaire, a quality of life (QOL) questionnaire, and the Cleeland Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) assessed at baseline, end of treatment, and three mon

Ultrasound findings in Plasmodium falciparum malaria: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether hand-carried ultrasound technology may be valuable in the assessment of children with acute malaria. Every year, approximately 800,000 children under the age of 5 yrs die of complications of Plasmodium falciparum malaria infection. The advent of hand-carried ultrasound technology has made diagnostic ultrasonography possible in underresourced settings. DESIGN: We performed a pilot observational study collecting clinical data and performing ultrasound examinations on children diagnosed with P. falciparum malaria infection. The targeted ultrasound examination in

The benefits of hypopharyngeal packing in nasal surgery: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Hypopharyngeal packs are used in nasal surgery to reduce the risk of aspiration and postoperative nausea and vomiting. Side effects associated with their use range from throat pain to retained packs postoperatively. AIM: To evaluate, as a pilot study, postoperative nausea/vomiting and throat pain scores for patients undergoing nasal surgery in whom a wet or dry hypopharyngeal pack was placed compared with patients who received no packing. METHODS: A randomized, double-blind prospective trial in a general ENT unit. RESULTS: The study failed to show a statistically significant dif

A pilot study of the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in PLS and ALS.

The prevalence of psychiatric disorders in primary lateral sclerosis (PLS) is currently unknown. In the present study, we compared the prevalence of psychiatric illness in patients with PLS and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). We hypothesized that if the psychosocial stress of motor neuron disease predisposes patients to depressive disorders, patients with ALS (with a poorer prognosis and more disability than patients with PLS) should have a higher prevalence of depressive disorders than patients with PLS. We administered the gold standard of psychiatric assessment, the SCID, to 19 PLS and

Assessing autonomic dysfunction symptoms in children: a pilot study.

As a screening tool to identify symptoms of autonomic dysfunction, the Pediatric Autonomic Symptoms Scale was administered to parents of children with familial dysautonomia, autism spectrum disorders, and age-matched controls. The total scores for the presence of symptoms were compared among the 3 groups for each section and overall. The Pediatric Autonomic Symptoms Scale distinguished controls from children with familial dysautonomia and autism spectrum disorders with scores from each section and overall scores. Familial dysautonomia children scored significantly higher in visceral symptoms,

Validation of the DynaPort MiniMod during sleep: a pilot study.

To measure activity during sleep, polysomnography and actigraphy are often used. The DynaPort MiniMod measures movement intensity and body position day and night. The goal was to examine the validity of the DynaPort MiniMod in assessing physical activity and body posture during sleep. In Study A, 10 healthy participants slept with the DynaPort MiniMod and the Actiwatch for one night. In Study B, 8 participants suspected of having Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome slept for one night with the DynaPort MiniMod and underwent complete polysomnography as part of the typical care protocol. Permanent grounding of a USAF pilot following photorefractive keratectomy.

INTRODUCTION: Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) has been extensively studied in the literature and its potential application in aircrew has not gone unnoticed. Complication rates following corneal refractive surgery (CRS), including PRK and laser in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK), remain low, with most patients achieving improved uncorrected visual acuity and reduced spectacle dependence. Overall, predictability, low complication rates, high rate of success, stability, and safety have all been cited as instrumental in the adoption of PRK in aviators. Consequently, the U.S. Air Force (USAF) approv

A "pilot light" of the right non-recurrent laryngeal nerve.

Total thyroidectomy was performed in a 53-year-old male, with Graves-Basedow's disease. At surgery, the vagus nerve was found to be located medially to the carotid artery associated with a non-recurrent laryngeal nerve arising directly from the cervical vagus: this association has never been described in the literature. These results indicate that a medial location of the vagus nerve may be considered as a "pilot light" of the non-recurrent laryngeal nerve.

Psychological factors involved in prurigo nodularis: A pilot study.

Emotional stresses and psychological disorders seem to be concurrent factors in some cases of prurigo nodularis (PN), a chronic skin condition with a difficult therapeutic approach. In order to improve the therapeutic strategies, we performed a psychometric study on 20 patients affected by generalized and histological proven PN. Specific questionnaires were employed to examine the hypotheses (General Health Questionnaire, State Trait Anxiety Inventory - form Y, Beck Depression Inventory-II, and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire). The results show that symptoms of anxiety and depression associa

[Pilot study on facial palsy correction with suture suspension].

We present a pilot study to evaluate the benefit of static facial suspension with Silhouette sutures. We operated on a female patient with complete facial palsy secondary to otic tuberculosis. The patient has currently achieved satisfactory facial symmetry, mastication and speech production. As a result, self-esteem and social interaction have also been recovered. Static facial suspension with Silhouette sutures is an alternative to dynamic techniques in patients who do not wish to or cannot undergo those more complex surgeries.

Serious complication of cement augmentation for damaged pilot hole.

Polymethl methacrylate (PMMA) screw reinforcement is frequently used in osteoporotic bone as well as in damaged pilot holes. However, PMMA use can be dangerous, since the amount of applied cement is uncontrolled. A 47-year-old male with traumatic cervical spondylolisthesis at C6-7 underwent anterior cervical plate fixation. During repeated drilling and tapping for false trajectory correction, a pilot hole was damaged. Although it was an unconventional method, PMMA augmentation was tried. However, PMMA was accidentally injected to the cervical spinal cord owing to lack of fluoroscopic guidance.

Contact urticaria from an oxygen mask in a military pilot.

Contact urticaria is a transient, wheal-and-flare response at the site of contact with a substance. We report a case of a military fighter pilot, with a background history of seborrheic dermatitis and steroid-induced facial skin atrophy, who subsequently developed contact urticaria from an oxygen facemask. Skin protection products such as barrier creams were used to try and minimize the provocation of contact urticaria from the oxygen mask whenever he flew, but without success. He was eventually permanently restricted from flying fighter aircraft.
