Development of disease-specific growth charts for Argentine Prader-Willi syndrome without growth hormone treatment.

BACKGROUND: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a complex genetic disorder characterised by infantile hypotonia, early-onset obesity, intellectual disability, hypopigmentation, small hands and feet, short stature, hypogonadism, and distinctive facial features. AIM: To generate and report growth curves for height, sitting height, hands and feet length for Argentine children with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) without growth hormone treatment. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of 1174 anthropometric measures were obtained from 167 children (82 boys) aged 0-19 years attending Hospital Garrahan between 1992

Quality of nutritional status assessment and its relationship with the effect of rainfall on childhood stunting: a cross-sectional study in rural Burkina Faso.

OBJECTIVES: In Burkina Faso, one in every four children under 5 years is stunted. Climate change will exacerbate childhood stunting. Strengthening the health system, particularly the quality of nutrition care at primary health facilities, can minimise the adverse climate effect on stunting. Thus, we examined the quality of nutritional status assessment (QoNA) during curative childcare services in primary health facilities in rural Burkina Faso and its relationship with rainfall-induced childhood stunting. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using anthropometric, rainfall, an

Long term monitoring of the reproductive behavior of wild Chinese pangolin (Manis pentadactyla).

Observations of Chinese pangolin (Manis pentadactyla) in the wild are extremely rare and challenging because of their nocturnal and cryptic activity patterns and low population density. The present article reported the first field observation in eastern Taiwan, from October 4, 2012 to June 16, 2016, on the reproductive behavior of the Chinese pangolin based on the monitoring of a female (LF28) using radiotelemetry and camera traps. During this period, LF28 aged from 1-4.5 years old and gave two single-births, both took place in early December, at 3 and 4 years old, respectively. We recorded th

The past, present, and future of selective progesterone receptor modulators in the management of uterine fibroids.

Uterine fibroids are common in women of reproductive age and can have a significant impact on quality of life and fertility. Although a number of international obstetrics/gynecology societies have issued evidence-based clinical practice guidelines for the management of symptomatic uterine fibroids, many of these guidelines do not yet reflect the most recent clinical evidence and approved indication for one of the key medical management options: the selective progesterone receptor modulator class. This article aims to share the clinical experience gained with selective progesterone receptor mod

Evidence for late Pleistocene population expansion of the malarial mosquitoes, Anopheles arabiensis and Anopheles gambiae in Nigeria.

Anopheles gambiae Giles s.s. and Anopheles arabiensis Patton (Diptera: Culicidae) are major vectors of malaria in Nigeria. We used 1115 bp of the mitochondrial COI gene to assess their population genetic structures based on samples from across Nigeria (n = 199). The mtDNA neighbour-joining tree, based on F(ST) estimates, separated An. gambiae M and S forms, except that samples of An. gambiae M from Calabar clustered with all the An. gambiae S form. Anopheles arabiensis and An. gambiae could be combined into a single star-shaped, parsimonious haplotype network, and shared three haplotypes. Hapl

Changes in periwinkle (Littorina littorea) populations following the ban on TBT-based antifoulings on small boats in the United Kingdom.

In 1987 the UK Government banned the use of tributyl tin (TBT)-based antifouling paints on small boats of less than 25 m. Following initial control measures taken in 1986, a program of research was started to monitor concentrations of TBT residues in estuarine waters and sediments and to observe faunistic changes in highly contaminated estuaries. As part of this program, the size-frequency and abundance of Littorina littorea populations have been recorded in the estuaries of the rivers Crouch (Essex) and Hamble (Hampshire). Since the TBT ban, the concentration of TBT residues in water and sedi

Strategies to maintain health in the Third World.

International cooperation with Third World countries aims at reducing the high morbidity and mortality of the population to a tolerable level. The main health problems are caused by poverty. Thus, the range of diseases in tropical countries can be explained more readily by the socio-economic situation than solely by the climate. Health services, in Africa in particular, have had to reduce drastically their budgets in the last ten years and now have only approximately 1/1000th of the funds usually available in industrialised countries. High population growth reduces the resources available per …

Congenital contractures, edema, hyperkeratosis, and intrauterine growth retardation: a fatal syndrome in Hutterite and Mennonite kindreds.

We present clinical findings in infants from three kindreds (two Hutterite and one Mennonite) with an apparently unique, fatal disorder. The major manifestations consist of severe intrauterine growth retardation, congenital contractures, and tense skin which is easily eroded. The skin is tightly drawn over the face, giving an abnormal appearance consisting of a narrow, pinched nose, small mouth, limited jaw mobility, and ectropion (in one). One infant had first-degree hypospadias. Apart from this, there were no organ malformations and the infants did not have hydrops. Histologically, the skin

Studies on biting Simulium damnosum s.l. at a breeding site in the Onchocerciasis Control Programme area during and after an interruption of insecticidal treatments.

The increase of population of biting S. damnosum s.l. at a breeding site situated within the Onchocerciasis Control Programme area of West Africa following a temporary cessation of insecticidal treatments was studied by making every day collections on human bait at five catching sites and for 2--3 days per week at seven others, between 17 January and 9 April 1977. Observations on pupal and larval densities, water and air temperatures, relative humidity and water level were also made. The results showed that there was an interval of 23 days between the last application of insecticide and the ap

[Review of the literature on intrauterine and birthweight charts].

OBJECTIVES: To describe the main intrauterine and birthweight charts and review the studies comparing their performance for the identification of infants at risk of adverse perinatal outcomes. METHODS: We carried out a literature search using Medline and selected the charts most frequently cited in the literature, French charts and those recently published. RESULTS: Current knowledge on the association between mortality and morbidity and growth anomalies (small and large for gestational age) mostly relies on the use of descriptive charts which describe the weight distribution in unselected p

The World Health Organization fetal growth charts: concept, findings, interpretation, and application.

Ultrasound biometry is an important clinical tool for the identification, monitoring, and management of fetal growth restriction and development of macrosomia. This is even truer in populations in which perinatal morbidity and mortality rates are high, which is a reason that much effort is put onto making the technique available everywhere, including low-income societies. Until recently, however, commonly used reference ranges were based on single populations largely from industrialized countries. Thus, the World Health Organization prioritized the establishment of fetal growth charts for inte

Personal, cultural and socio-economic determinants of childbearing reluctance in small families: a field-based study from Iran.

BACKGROUND: Decreasing population growth (PG) and aging have been appeared as major national problems in Iran. In this study, reluctance to childbearing and determinants, as an index of PG was investigated to guide policymakers for setting appropriate strategies and interventions. This research addresses childbearing reluctance and its personal, cultural and socio-economic determinants among small families, which represent 45-50% of Iranian households. METHODS: Subjects who did not have any children or had only one child been selected through a cross-sectional study using systematic random sa…

Prevalence and determinants of stunting and anaemia in children aged 6-23 months: A multilevel analysis from rural Ethiopia.

Low- and middle-income countries shoulder the greatest burden of stunting and anaemia in children. This calls for prompt and effective intervention measures, while the contributing factors are not fully understood. This study evaluates determinants spanning from individual-, household- and community levels including agroecology and antinutrients as unique sets of predictors. Primary data were collected from 660 rural households representing the midland (ML), highland, and upper highland (UHL) agroecological zones from northern Ethiopia. The study relates several predictors to stunting and anae

Growth and neurodevelopmental outcomes of preterm and low birth weight infants in rural Kenya: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: Data on long-term outcomes of preterm (PT) and low birth weight (LBW) infants in countries with high rates of neonatal mortality and childhood stunting are limited, especially from community settings. The current study sought to explore growth and neurodevelopmental outcomes of PT/LBW infants from a rural community-based setting of Kenya up to 18 months adjusted age. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Migori County, Kenya. PARTICIPANTS: Three hundred and eighty-two PT/LBW infants (50.2% of those identified as eligible) from a cluster randomised control trial evaluating a pac

Mother's dietary diversity and association with stunting among children <2 years old in a low socio-economic environment: A case-control study in an urban care setting in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Mothers are often responsible for preparing nutritious foods in their households. However, the quality of mother's diets is often neglected, which may affect both mother's and child's nutrition. Because no single food contains all necessary nutrients, diversity in dietary sources is needed to ensure a quality diet. We aimed to study the association between mother's dietary diversity and stunting in children <2 years attending Dhaka Hospital of icddr,b, a diarrhoeal disease hospital in Dhaka, Bangladesh. A case-control study (n = 296) was conducted from November 2016 to February 2017. Data were

Maternal depressive symptoms and child nutritional status: A cross-sectional study in socially disadvantaged Pakistani community.

Malnutrition is a primary cause of child morbidity and mortality. The effects of maternal depressive symptoms on children's health, especially their nutritional status, have received less attention in developing countries but needs to be evaluated to understand the public health implications of maternal depression. The aim of the current study was to investigate the association between maternal depressive symptoms and children's nutritional status using data from low socioeconomic community in Pakistan. Maternal depressive symptoms defined as Aga Khan University Anxiety and Depression Scale sc

ACTH deficiency in childhood cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: Adrenocorticotropin deficiency (ACTHD) can be clinically subtle, but life-threatening if not recognized. We assessed the prevalence of ACTHD in survivors of childhood cancer according to tumor diagnosis/therapy. PROCEDURE: Chart review of endocrine/oncology history was performed in 310 childhood cancer survivors. Patients were referred to endocrine clinic because of slow growth, fatigue, or abnormal pubertal timing. Evaluation of growth hormone (GH), thyrotropin (TSH), ACTH, luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) was performed. Low response to metyrapone
