BACKGROUND: We previously described a new focus of endemic pemphigus foliaceus in rural areas of El Bagre, Colombia, with clinical and direct immunofluorescence characteristics of pemphigus erythematosus.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to characterize autoantigen profiles for 34 serum samples obtained from patients with this condition.

Transthyretin (TTR) tetramer dissociation and misfolding facilitate assembly into amyloid fibrils that putatively cause senile systemic amyloidosis and familial amyloid polyneuropathy. Autoantibody reactive with tRNA was identified by immunoprecipitation of Hela cell extract. Four out of 56 sera from patients with autoimmune chronic active hepatitis (CAH), and four out of 35 sera from patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) contained antibody directed against gel-purified tRNA in Hela cell extract, but no sera obtained from CAH type B, CAH non-A, non-B, or healthy volunteers did. Living adult males and microfilariae of the cattle filarial parasite Onchocerca gibsoni were externally labelled with radioactive iodine using the iodogen and Bolton-Hunter procedures. Eight surface-radioiodinated merozoite proteins from a cloned, pathogenic isolate of Babesia bovis can be immunoprecipitated by antibody from cattle that are completely protected against clinical babesiosis. Markedly increased quantities of lysozyme have been found in the serum and urine (ranging to 2.6 g per day) of ten consecutive cases of monocytic and monomyelocytic leukemia.
