Advanced 3D Printing of Polyetherketoneketone Hydroxyapatite Composites via Fused Filament Fabrication with Increased Interlayer Connection.

Additively manufactured implants, surgical guides, and medical devices that would have direct contact with the human body require predictable behaviour when stress is applied during their standard operation. Products built with Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) possess orthotropic characteristics, thus, it is necessary to determine the properties that can be achieved in the XY- and Z-directions of printing. A concentration of 10 wt% of hydroxyapatite (HA) in polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) matrix was selected as the most promising biomaterial supporting cell attachment for medical applications and…

An electrochemical H2S sensor based on the screen printing Fe@Pt/C/PTFE sensing electrode.

A novel electrochemical gas sensor for sensitive detection of H2S at room temperature is constructed based on the Fe@Pt/C composite material. The core-shell structured Fe@Pt catalyst was synthesized by a two-step reduction method and physically dispersed in Vulcan XC-72 carbon powders. The core-shell structure increases the effective catalytic surface area of Pt while significantly reducing the usage of the noble metal Pt, leading to improved catalytic performance and decreased production costs. Additionally, the mature screen-printing process is used to coat the catalyst film. A waterproof an…

Insights into geometric deviations of medical 3d-printing: a phantom study utilizing error propagation analysis.

BACKGROUND: The use of 3D-printing in medicine requires a context-specific quality assurance program to ensure patient safety. The process of medical 3D-printing involves several steps, each of which might be prone to its own set of errors. The segmentation error (SegE), the digital editing error (DEE) and the printing error (PrE) are the most important partial errors. Approaches to evaluate these have not yet been implemented in a joint concept. Consequently, information on the stability of the overall process is often lacking and possible process optimizations are difficult to implement. In …

In-House 3D Printing and Model Processing Technique for Creating High-Fidelity Transparent Craniofacial Models.

The use of high-fidelity stereolithographic models that accurately reflect patient-specific pathology has become commonplace in craniofacial surgery. Multiple studies have reported the use of commercially available three-dimensional (3D) printers that allow medical centers with limited resources to reconstruct 3D models comparable to industry-made counterparts. However, most models are printed using only a single filament, which portrays the surface craniofacial anatomy, but fails to highlight relevant intraosseous structures. This presents a significant limitation when used for preoperative p

A Novel Immobilization Method for the Treatment of Head and Neck Cancer Using 3D Printing.

Proper immobilization is critical for the delivery of high-quality radiation therapy. In cases when traditional immobilization is not feasible, 3-dimensional (3D) printing may provide a better-tolerated custom immobilization that is comparably effective. We present the successful treatment of a patient with inoperable oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma who was unable to tolerate traditional immobilization. To avoid covering the face, we created a 3D-printed cradle for the back of his head and neck. This design enabled the patient to tolerate traditional simulation scans with and without int…

Facile Fabrication of Flexible and High-Performing Thermoelectrics by Direct Laser Printing on Plastic Foil.

The emerging fields of wearables and the Internet of Things introduce the need for electronics and power sources with unconventional form factors: large area, customizable shape, and flexibility. Thermoelectric (TE) generators can power those systems by converting abundant waste heat into electricity, whereas the versatility of additive manufacturing suits heterogeneous form factors. Here, additive manufacturing of high-performing flexible TEs is proposed. Maskless and large-area patterning of Bi2Te3-based films is performed by laser powder bed fusion directly on plastic foil. Mechanical inter

Electrochemical platform produced by 3D printing for analysis of small volumes using different electrode materials.

Fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing is a promising additive manufacturing technique to produce low-cost disposable electrochemical devices. However, the print of devices like well-known screen-printed electrodes (all electrodes on the same device) is difficult using the available technology (few materials available for production of working electrodes). In this paper we present a procedure to produce disposable and robust electrochemical devices by FDM 3D printing that allows reproducible analysis of small volumes (50-2000 μL). The device consists of just two printed parts that allow e…
