Although cases of human cutaneous myiasis do occur in Queensland, few have been reported in the medical literature. No prospective studies to record and to identify the Diptera that are responsible in a particular area seem to have been reported. Thus, a prospective study was undertaken in Brisbane hospitals between October 9, 1986 and March 15, 1988. The importance of blood cultures in diagnosing disseminated mycobacteriosis in AIDS patients was evaluated. Blood samples were screened for mycobacteria by culture and microscopic techniques. Mycobacteremia was proven in 20/136 (14.7%) AIDS patients, the agent being M. avium-M. intracellulare (MAI) in 16 cases and M. tuberculosis in four cases. In 16 consecutive patients with systemic mastocytosis, we prospectively evaluated a variety of gastrointestinal functions and examined how they relate to the occurrence of gastrointestinal symptoms. Nine patients had either a duodenal ulcer or duodenitis. A prospective study of fertility was conducted from 1977 to 1982. Analysis of the relation between cigarette smoking and occurrence of a pregnancy was performed on 1887 couples. The actuarial pregnancy rate was 82.9% at the end of a year. Cigarette smoking by both members of the couple was found to be related to decreased fertility when this factor was considered alone. Eleven patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) were monitored prospectively during pregnancy. Clinical and serologic features of disease activity were recorded, and after delivery, a careful search for pathologic changes in the placenta was carried out. A national registry was begun in 1981 to collect data from 32 centers on patients diagnosed by uniform criteria as having primary pulmonary hypertension. Entered into the registry were 187 patients with a mean age (+/- SD) of 36 +/- 15 years (range, 1 to 81), and a female-to-male ratio of 1.7:1 overall. In this prospective study, 56 women (2.3%) of 2,358 (47% nulliparous and 53% multiparous) delivered during a 12-month period at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Malmö General Hospital, had symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome during pregnancy. In a prospective longitudinal study over several years, 58 patients with breast cancer are compared to 52 patients with fibrocystic disease and 24 patients with mastodynia. Results of coping (as assessed with the Bernese Coping Modes) are presented for the illness course of the first 6 months: (1) There is considerable variation of coping depending on illness situation and illness state. This report describes the results of microsurgical discectomy in a prospective study of 200 consecutive patients with intractable sciatica, followed independently by a pain clinic. Post operative morbidity was minimal, the complication rate very low, and patients were discharged home early. Leg pain was relieved in almost all patients, but back pain was relieved in only 72% of patients. The rate of return to work at one, three and twelve months post-operatively was 50%, 83% and 95% respectively. Microsurgical discectomy is an effective and safe procedure.

A prospective study was undertaken to determine the incidence of possible myocardial damage following electrical injury. Sixteen patients with non-flash electrical injuries were assessed utilizing serial electrocardiograms (ECG), creatine kinase (CK) and MB creatinine kinase (MB-CK) determinations, technetium 99m stannous pyrophosphate scans, and 24-hour Holter monitors. Forty-five phakic eyes with open-angle glaucoma and uncontrolled intraocular pressure underwent laser trabeculoplasty. To 468 women with epilepsy enrolled in the study, 171 children were born and evaluated prospectively. The mothers in this group were characterized by low socioeconomic status, high frequency of tonic-clonic generalized seizures, and use of combinations of anticonvulsants. On the basis of our own earlier studies, the progress of 80 twin pregnancies is followed in a prospective investigation. Early diagnosis makes possible numerous measures for prevention of premature birth--the central problem of twin pregnancies. A cerclage was carried out in 51 cases (63.75%).
