The aim of this retrospective study was to examine the histories of 100 patients with 170 implants that were consecutively treated and reported in a previous study to identify which patient and implant factors might have affected the outcomes of therapy. Patient factors included history of periodontitis, hypertension, cardiac problems, rheumatoid arthritis, smoking, and penicillin allergy. Implant factors included whether the prosthesis was cemented or screw retained and initial bone loss (≤ 50% or > 50% of implant length). Frequency of maintenance visits (≤ 3 months or > 3 months) were record

Microsystem technologies offer significant advantages in the development of neural prostheses. In the last two decades, it has become feasible to develop intelligent prostheses that are fully implantable into the human body with respect to functionality, complexity, size, weight, and compactness. Design and development enforce collaboration of various disciplines including physicians, engineers, and scientists. The retina implant system can be taken as one sophisticated example of a prosthesis which bypasses neural defects and enables direct electrical stimulation of nerve cells. This micro im

Patients who have systemic diseases in conjunction with severely resorbed maxillary and mandibular bone present challenges for dental implant therapy and rehabilitation. This case report describes the interdisciplinary comprehensive treatment completed on a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and common variable immunodeficiency (CVID). Patients with these systemic conditions present a multifactorial challenge for dental treatment due to advanced carious lesions, missing teeth, lack of adequate bone quality and quantity, as well as secondary effects of their medications. Sixteen consecutive patients with atrophic maxillae, who had been referred for bone augmentation using iliac bone grafting before the placement of dental implants, received a full clinical examination and underwent a CT scan before and after surgery. Linear vertical and horizontal measurements were made before and 6 months after surgery. Differences in mean bone gain or loss for each area were compared between a group that received an immediate total provisional prosthesis on temporary immediate implants (test group, 12 patients) and a control group (four patients). Both groups showed signific

Wear debris particles have been associated with bone resorption and loosening of total joint implants. To characterize the wear particles around failed knee prostheses, tissues adjacent to 47 implants of 3 different designs were evaluated: 29 were posterior cruciate ligament retention type (Group I), 12 were posterior cruciate ligament sacrificing or substituting (Total Condylar, Insall-Burstein), (Group II), and 6 were mobile bearing (posterior cruciate ligament retaining LCS), (Group III). Wear particles were isolated and evaluated using electronic particle quantitation and scanning electron

Bone atrophy occurs after tooth extraction in the posterior mandible, placing the mandibular canal and its neural, arterial, and venous contents closer to the osseous facial aspect and the coronal crest. This proximity places the structure in danger of damage when dental implants are surgically placed to support fixed or removable prostheses. Several options are available to treat these areas for implant-supported fixed and removable complete or partial dentures. Osseous grafting and ridge expansion are surgical options that enable acceptance of standard sized dental implants but have serious

BACKGROUND: Titanium has been a well established implant material for many years. New material processing techniques now permit the manufacture of small implants for ossicular chain reconstruction.
METHODS: Between November 1994 and September 1995, 100 titanium middle ear implants (55 PORP, 45 TORP) were used for reconstruction of the ossicular chain. A range of five different sizes for partial and total protheses suits all implantation needs. The shape of the implants can be altered by bending. Time consuming intraoperative shaping and trimming is avoided.
RESULTS: At a follow-up time of th

One of the options for management of severely traumatized dentitions is to provide immediate implant placement with immediate loading. Three representative cases out of 15 patients with 23 traumatized teeth treated to date in our clinic are presented. None had labial bone fractures. The teeth were replaced with NobelReplace Groovy implants (Nobel Biocare, Gothenburg, Sweden) in the fresh sockets immediately after extraction. They were placed toward the palatal areas in the sockets and 3 mm below the gingival margins. If there were gaps between implants and sockets wider than 1 mm, particulate

Because of the recent resurgence of interest in metal-on-metal bearing components for total hip arthroplasties, the long-term results of 153 consecutive McKee-Farrar total hip arthroplasties done in 129 patients by one surgeon between 1969 and 1973 were evaluated. A retrospective chart review provided patient demographics (age, gender, weight, primary diagnosis), revision dates, indications, and implant survival data. The average age of the patients at implantation surgery was 61 years (range, 28-85 years) and these patients were observed as many as 28 years. Primary diagnoses included osteoar

Mechanically close-to-bone carbon-fiber-reinforced poly-ether-ether-ketone (CFR-PEEK)-based orthopedic implants are rising to compete with metal implants, due to their X-ray transparency, superior biocompatibility, and body-environment stability. While real-time strain assessment of implants is crucial for the postsurgery study of fracture union and failure of prostheses, integrating precise and durable sensors on orthopedic implants remains a great challenge. Herein, a laser direct-write technique is presented to pattern conductive features (minimum sheet resistance <1.7 Ω sq-1 ) on CRF-PEEK-

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the 6-year effectiveness of maxillary and mandibular full-arch immediately loaded prostheses fabricated using an intraoral welding technique.
METHODS: All patients received the same day of surgery a fixed, full-arch prosthesis supported by an intraorally welded titanium framework created directly in the patient's mouth using a titanium bar. Life table analysis of implant survival, complications, and any other adverse events were recorded at yearly follow-up for a period of 6 years.
RESULTS: One hundred twenty-four (86.11%) of 144 implants placed

BACKGROUND: Small prosthesis size has been associated with poorer postoperative outcomes in aortic valve replacement (AVR). We hypothesized that the use of small aortic valve (AV) prostheses does not independently increase operative mortality following AVR, but that mortality may instead be related to comorbidities.
METHODS: We examined the mortality among 4,621 patients who underwent primary AVR operations at 13 different statewide centers from 2003 to 2008. Patients were stratified by prosthesis size into groups with small (≤21 mm, n=1,810) and standard AV prostheses (≥23 mm, n=2,811). The

Between 1982 and 1989, 100 primary lower limb reconstructions were done using the Kotz Modular Femur Tibia Reconstruction System after resection of a malignant tumor. In 32 patients a proximal femur prosthesis was implanted, in 40 patients a distal femur prosthesis was implanted, in 19 patients a proximal tibia component was implanted, in four patients a total femur prosthesis was implanted, and in five patients a total knee prosthesis was implanted. The Kaplan-Meier estimate of the overall survival rate of the prostheses was 85% after 3 years, 79% after 5 years, and 71% after 10 years. The mo

Retinal prostheses are designed to restore a basic sense of sight to people with profound vision loss. They require a relatively intact posterior visual pathway (optic nerve, lateral geniculate nucleus and visual cortex). Retinal implants are options for people with severe stages of retinal degenerative disease such as retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration. There have now been three regulatory-approved retinal prostheses. Over five hundred patients have been implanted globally over the past 15 years. Devices generally provide an improved ability to localize high-contrast ob

Pain and instability of the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) are common sequelae following a fracture of the distal radius. Many soft tissue procedures have been described, not all of which are successful. Ulnar head replacement prostheses are available but do not always provide stability. We designed a two-part, easy to implant, distal radioulnar prosthesis and implanted it in 19 patients. The first prototype was inserted in 2002 and is still in place. During the study, the design was changed twice, resulting in three groups with four patients in group A, five in group B, and ten in group C. Un

To identify factors affecting radiologically detected loosening of the Charnley femoral prosthesis, 326 femoral prostheses with 10- to 20-year followup were studied. After observation of postoperative radiological changes, the criteria for fixation failure detected radiologically, of femoral prostheses were defined as progression or accompanying occurrences of subsidence, demarcation, separation of the prosthesis from cement, cement fracture, or endosteal cavitation. Sixteen femoral prostheses (4.9%) developed radiologically detected fixation failure. Male gender, low canal flare index, low fe

Ex vivo testing techniques were used to determine the ferromagnetic qualities of, presence of heating in, and artifacts produced by 13 different heart valve prostheses exposed to a 1.5-T (64-MHz) magnetic resonance (MR) system. None of the heart valve prostheses showed a measurable deflection in the 1.5-T static magnetic field. Only minimal artifacts were produced during MR imaging with a fast spoiled GRASS (gradient-recalled acquisition in the steady state) pulse sequence. The largest temperature changes measured during a "worst case" MR imaging sequence (estimated average specific absorption
