Integrating medical and substance abuse treatment for addicts living with HIV/AIDS: evidence-based nursing practice model.

Forty-five active substance abusers with HIV/AIDS voluntarily participated in a substance abuse treatment research study with interviews at intake, 6 months and 12 months. These participants were engaged in treatment for a minimum of 45 days and a maximum of 90 days. The study used a nursing model of care, The Personalized Nursing LIGHT model, to integrate treatment for HIV/AIDS with substance abuse treatment. The LIGHT model seeks to enhance patient well being directly and thereby to support interventions that decrease substance use and improve management of chronic disease. The substance abu

Functional brain MRI in patients complaining of electrohypersensitivity after long term exposure to electromagnetic fields.

INTRODUCTION: Ten adult patients with electromagnetic hypersensitivity underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) brain scans. All scans were abnormal with abnormalities which were consistent and similar. It is proposed that fMRI brain scans be used as a diagnostic aid for determining whether or not a patient has electromagnetic hypersensitivity. Over the years we have seen an increasing number of patients who had developed multi system complaints after long term repeated exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs). These complaints included headaches, intermittent cognitive and memo

Psychological adjustment and suicidal ideation in patients with AIDS.

This article assesses the psychosocial adjustment to illness and examines the relationship between adjustment and psychosocial and medical variables in 91 ambulatory HIV-infected patients. The 91 subjects were receiving ambulatory medical care in hospitals (Memorial Hospital, New York Hospital, and St. Vincent's Hospital) and in private medical consult (Gay Men's Health Crisis) in New York. The majority (74.5%) of subjects had AIDS. The sample was composed principally of white Roman Catholic homosexual men living alone. However, 49.5% were black or hispanic, 31.9% had intravenous drug use as t

Prevalence and Correlates of Probable HIV-Associated Dementia in HIV Outpatients in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

This study identified prevalence and correlates of HIV-associated dementia (HAD) among people living with HIV (PLWHA) in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Four hundred PLWHA completed a self-report questionnaire and were interviewed by a trained researcher to assess HAD using the International HIV Dementia Scale (IHDS). Clinical information concerning HIV treatment was also extracted from medical records. The results indicate the prevalence of probable HAD based on IHDS score <10.5 was 39.8% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 35.0%-44.5%). Probable HAD was significantly higher among female, older PLWHA a

Microstructural, Morphological, and Metabolic Changes Following Magnetic Resonance-Guided Focused Ultrasound Capsulotomy.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound anterior capsulotomy (MRgFUS-AC) is an experimental, incisionless intervention for refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). Although its clinical efficacy has been demonstrated, the longitudinal structural and microstructural brain changes that it induces remain incompletely characterized. METHODS: A total of 33 patients with treatment-resistant OCD (n = 14) or MDD (n = 19) underwent MRgFUS-AC targeting the ventral anterior limb of the internal capsule. Diffusion and structural magnetic resonan

Overkill behind closed doors: a medico-legal case series and review of literature of familial Homicides.

"Overkill" is a specific homicidal pattern marked by the excessive and disproportionate use of violence beyond what is necessary to cause death to the extent that a high number of post-mortem lesions are often found on the corpse. Though it constitutes a minority of homicide cases, overkill is increasingly observed in domestic and familial contexts, where symbolic or psychopathological motivations often emerge. This study presents a review of literature concerning overkill in familial context and a five-year retrospective analysis (2021-2025) of judicial cases managed by the Institute of Legal

Differentiation between psychotic and non-psychotic major depression by the tabular prior-data fitted network.

BACKGROUND: Misdiagnosing psychotic major depression (PMD) as non-psychotic major depression (NPMD) can lead to poor treatment outcomes. This study aims to develop and validate a machine learning-based model using electronic medical record (EMR) data and the Tabular Prior-data Fitted Network (TabPFN) model to distinguish between PMD and NPMD. METHODS: A total of 666 patients with PMD and 808 patients with NPMD from January 2020 to February 2025 were included. The Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) algorithm was first applied for feature screening, and the TabPFN model was

Multimodal MRI study of gray matter and functional connectivity abnormalities in adolescents with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe psychiatric condition characterized by mood instability, with significant impacts on social and cognitive functioning. Clarifying the neural mechanisms underlying BD during adolescence may aid early diagnosis and treatment. METHODS: We conducted a multimodal neuroimaging study integrating functional and structural MRI data to investigate alterations in spontaneous neural activity (amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and regional homogeneity (ReHo)), seed-based resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC), and gray matter volum

Fear conditioning: Insights into learning, memory and extinction and its relevance to clinical disorders.

Fear, whether innate or learned, is an essential emotion required for survival. The learning, and subsequent memory, of fearful events enhances our ability to recognise and respond to threats, aiding adaptation to new, ever-changing environments. Considerable research has leveraged associative learning protocols such as contextual or auditory forms of fear conditioning in rodents, to understand fear learning, memory consolidation and extinction phases of memory. Such assays have led to detailed characterisation of the underlying neurocircuitry and neurobiology supporting fear learning processe

Association between peripheral inflammation and body mass index on white matter integrity and free water in bipolar II depression.

Immuno-metabolic dysregulation is implicated in mood disorders and elucidating non-invasive brain correlates may aid clinical translation of pathomechanism. This study aims to investigate the interrelationship between peripheral inflammation and body mass index (BMI) and their effects on white matter (WM) microstructure and free water (FW) in bipolar II depression (BDII-D). Voxel-wise FW and FW-corrected fractional anisotropy (FAt) were compared between 146 BDII-D and 151 healthy controls (HCs) using FSL Randomise. Partial correlations were used to explore associations between BMI, peripheral

Evidence of Altered Biobehavioral Threat Processes in Adolescents With Eating Disorders: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVE: Etiological models of eating disorders (EDs) suggest there is considerable overlap between anxiety and EDs. In particular, shared clinical features across these psychiatric diagnoses suggest that common threat processes (i.e., changes in affect, cognition, and physiology, or behavior in response to a feared stimulus) underlie their maintenance. Compared to anxiety disorders, however, less is known about the neurobiological bases of threat that may give rise to and maintain ED symptoms, particularly among adolescents. Addressing this knowledge gap will aid in informing future researc

Prevalence and comorbidity of mental disorders among young adults with a history of residential youth care - a two-wave longitudinal study of stability and change.

Among youth in residential youth care (RYC) there is a high load of experienced adversities and a high prevalence of mental disorders. Less is known about the stability and change of mental disorders and whether individual or contextual factors that are protective of adult mental disorders could be identified. The current study is a 10-year follow-up of young adults with a history of RYC in Norway. At baseline (T1), 76% met criteria of a mental disorder. At follow-up (T2), diagnostic psychiatric interviews were conducted by phone by experienced doctors and psychologists. A response rate of 52%

Future Therapeutic Strategies for Alzheimer's Disease: Focus on Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive, degenerative brain disorder that impairs memory and thinking skills, leading to significant economic and humanistic burdens. It is associated with various neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) such as anxiety, agitation, depression, aggression, apathy, and psychosis. NPSs are common in patients with AD, affecting up to 97% of individuals diagnosed with AD. The severity of NPS is linked to disease progression and cognitive decline. NPS in Alzheimer's disease leads to increased morbidity, mortality, caregiver burden, earlier nursing home placement, and higher

Geographical distance predicts psychiatric treatment retention for Hispanic women with comorbid major depression and breast cancer.

PURPOSE: Depression is among the most common comorbid psychiatric disorders of patients with breast cancer. Depression decreases patient quality of life and, if untreated, can adversely affect cancer treatment. We sought to identify treatment barriers for women with breast cancer receiving psychotherapy for depression. Findings may help policy makers and researchers determine funding and design of future studies involving this population, especially in communities with high rates of health disparities. METHODS: We used data from a randomized trial for women with breast cancer and current DSM-

Expert opinions on pharmacological symptomatic treatment of behavioral symptoms in frontotemporal dementia: A survey of the Neuropsychiatric International Consortium on Frontotemporal Dementia (NIC-FTD).

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) is essentially characterized by progressive changes in personality and cognition. Clinically, bvFTD presents with often profound behavioral symptomatology. Despite the high burden of these symptoms for both patients and caregivers, there is no general consensus on an effective pharmacological symptomatic treatment. Interestingly, for multiple similar symptoms in primary psychiatric disorders, there is consensus on an effective pharmacological treatment. The aim of this study is to explore currently preferred clinical pr

Social stress induces autoimmune responses against the brain.

Clinical studies have revealed a high comorbidity between autoimmune diseases and psychiatric disorders, including major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the mechanisms connecting autoimmunity and depression remain unclear. Here, we aim to identify the processes by which stress impacts the adaptive immune system and the implications of such responses to depression. To examine this relationship, we analyzed antibody responses and autoimmunity in the chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) model in mice, and in clinical samples from patients with MDD. We show that socially stressed mice have elev

Using Telemedicine to Assess and Manage Psychosis in Neurodegenerative Diseases in Long-Term Care.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic has forced a sudden global implementation of telemedicine strategies, including in long-term care (LTC) facilities where many people with dementia and Parkinson disease (PD) reside. Telemedicine offers a unique set of advantages for residents in LTC facilities if effectively supported and implemented, including expanded access to specialists in rural or underserved areas or for people with dementia who cannot travel for off-site visits. Many medical and psychiatric organizations have recently issued new or updated guidelines on the use of teleme
