Exploring corrective experiences in a successful case of short-term dynamic psychotherapy.

The concept of corrective emotional experience, originally formulated by psychoanalysts Alexander and French (1946), has been redefined by contemporary researchers to be theoretically nonspecific, that is, as "coming to understand or experience an event or relationship in a different or unexpected way" (Castonguay & Hill, 2011). Using postsession questionnaires, videotapes, and posttermination interviews, we explored whether (and how) a corrective experience occurred in a successful case of short-term dynamic psychotherapy (STDP; Davanloo, 1980). A 35-year-old woman suffering severe panic atta…

Brief psychodynamic interpersonal psychotherapy for patients with multisomatoform disorder: randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Multisomatoform disorder is characterised by severe and disabling bodily symptoms, and pain is one of the most common and impairing of these. Furthermore, these bodily symptoms cannot be explained by an underlying organic disorder. Patients with multisomatoform disorder are commonly found at all levels of healthcare and are typically difficult to treat for physicians as well as for mental health specialists. AIMS: To test whether brief psychodynamic interpersonal therapy (PIT) effectively improves the physical quality of life in patients who have had multisomatoform disorder for a

Early psychotherapy processes: an examination of client and trainee clinician perspective convergence.

Convergence in the therapist-client dyad has been hypothesized to play an important role in the development of the therapeutic relationship and in successful therapy outcomes. Further, understanding the client's views and opinions of treatment has been identified as a critical skill for therapists in training to learn in order to reach professional competency in conducting psychotherapy. This study assessed convergence for 151 trainee therapist-client dyads on the identification of goals and tasks of treatment and on ratings of the therapeutic relationship, effectiveness of therapy and the cli…

Applied cognitive psychology: Implications of cognitive psychology for clinical psychology and psychotherapy.

Cognitive psychology has made numerous contributions to clinical psychology, and these contributions are considered especially with reference to the anxiety disorders. It is argued that there are four major contributions that can be identified. First, the cognitive approach has led to the development of complex models showing the main cognitive processes and structures of relevance to an understanding of anxiety disorders. Second, controlled laboratory studies permit a more detailed investigation of cognitive biases in anxious patients than generally is feasible in more naturalistic settings.

Habit reversal versus supportive psychotherapy for Tourette's disorder: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: The authors investigated the efficacy of habit reversal for Tourette's disorder, which is characterized by multiple motor and vocal tics. METHOD: Thirty-two patients with Tourette's disorder were randomly assigned to 14 sessions of either habit reversal or supportive psychotherapy. Habit reversal consisted of awareness training, self-monitoring, relaxation training, competing response training, and contingency management. Changes in severity of Tourette's disorder and psychosocial impairment were investigated over the course of the 14-session treatment for the 29 patients who compl…

[Anxiety patients before and after hospitalization for psychotherapy - from a psychophysiological standpoint].

Psychophysiological course studies are still the exception in AP hospitalized for psychotherapy. The aim of this study was to perform a more precise psychophysiological analysis of anxiety patients (AP) before and after hospital treatment. From a sample of 28 AP, 13 were psychophysiologically and psychodiagnostically examined and compared to controls (CG) at the beginning and end of in-patient psychotherapy and 4 months later. APs showed higher heart rate (HR) and electrodermal spontaneous fluctuation (SF) than control patients but did not differ in their resting systolic (SBP) and diastolic b…

Interpersonal psychotherapy delivered over the telephone to recurrent depressives. A pilot study.

Rates of recurrent depression peak among women in their childbearing years, yet a large number of these women are not treated or do not seek maintenance treatment between episodes. Barriers to treatment include time constraints, demands of child care, and finances. A method for improving access to treatment of depression may be delivery of psychotherapy over the telephone. A 12-week pilot controlled clinical trial with random assignment was conducted to test the feasibility and efficacy of Interpersonal Psychotherapy delivered over the telephone (IPT-T) for depression in women (N=15 IPT-T and …

Group psychoeducation for bulimia nervosa with and without additional psychotherapy process sessions.

OBJECTIVE: The present study examined whether additional sessions of group psychotherapy process (PP) would incrementally benefit bulimia nervosa (BN) subjects over and above that which is achieved through a course of brief group psychoeducation (PE). METHOD: Utilizing a quasi-experimental design, the first cohort of 40 BN subjects completed five-session PE-alone groups that were highly didactic and explicitly devoid of group process work. The second cohort of 41 BN subjects completed 12-session PE + PP groups that integrated PE with more conventional cognitive-behavioral group process interv…

Short term versus long term psychotherapy in opioid dependence: a pilot study.

A multicenter prospective open study was performed in order to compare the effectiveness of 2 modalities of individual dynamic psychotherapy in a group of recently detoxified opioid dependent patients. Thirty four patients were assigned to receive either short-term dynamic psychotherapy (ST) or long-term dynamic psychotherapy (LT); both modalities were offered along with drug counselling. At the end of the treatment, the short term therapy group was followed up for 2 years, while the long term therapy group continued the follow up for one year, due to the different time span of the treatment a…

Ketamine Combined With Psychotherapy as a Treatment for Resistant Depression in a Public European Hospital.

PURPOSE: Depression affects around 280 million people worldwide, and about 30% of patients have treatment-resistant depression. Ketamine has significant scientific evidence supporting its use as an antidepressant, making it a promising approach for treatment-resistant cases. Combining ketamine with psychotherapy may enhance therapeutic response and support longer-lasting cognitive and behavioral change. This pilot proof-of-concept study aims to evaluate the effect of treatment with ketamine infusion combined with psychological intervention in a sample of nine patients with treatment-resistant …

Navigating the complexity of AI adoption in psychotherapy by identifying key facilitators and barriers.

Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in mental healthcare offer promising opportunities to reduce therapists' burden and enhance healthcare delivery, yet adoption remains challenging. This study identified key facilitators and barriers to AI adoption in mental healthcare, precisely psychotherapy, by conducting six online focus groups with patients and therapists, using a semi-structured guide based on the NASSS (Nonadoption, Abandonment, Scale-up, Spread, and Sustainability) framework. Data from N = 32 participants were analyzed using a combined deductive and inductive thematic analysis. …

Updating Psychotherapy Work with the Future: Futures Thinking and the Futurizing Functions of Containment.

The acceleration of climate change and other global and political crises has created a state of "permacrisis," confronting patients with significant distress about and need to grapple with complex and threatening futures emerging from ecological and social upheaval. A core task of psychotherapy has always been imagining alternative paths and self-definitions to improve future outcomes, formalized in approaches such as "future-oriented therapy" or "future-directed therapy." Now the neurobiological and psychological mechanisms that support the process of thinking about potential futures are bett…

Trust and respect declines and recoveries in psychotherapy: Clinical impact of relational feedback.

Measurement-based care, also referred to as routine outcome monitoring, has demonstrated modest benefits for psychotherapy outcomes, yet less is known about how feedback on specific relational processes may influence clinical course. The present study examined whether fluctuations in patient-reported trust and respect toward the therapist-conceptualized here as meaningful declines and subsequent recoveries in trust/respect, rather than direct measures of alliance ruptures and repairs-are associated with changes in functioning and whether providing therapists with feedback on these ratings alte…

Recent trends and adaptations in trauma-informed psychoanalytic psychotherapies: A scoping review.

A growing sensitivity has emerged within psychoanalytic theory and intervention to the specific conditions of complex posttraumatic pathology and its clinical challenges. Yet an articulated, encompassing view of the diverse proposals within this new sensitivity is still lacking. This article advances such articulation through a scoping review of psychoanalytic interventions focused on trauma and dissociation published over the past 15 years. Our analysis identifies five axes of trauma-sensitive psychoanalytic practice addressing vulnerability to dysregulation, limited symbolic access to trauma
