National Health Insurance interprofessional practice implementation in hand rehabilitation service delivery in South Africa.

UNLABELLED: South Africa's current healthcare system is unequal and inefficient, with 71% of the population accessing underfunded public healthcare facilities. The imminent National Health Insurance (NHI) aims to balance the inequality between private and public health services by providing universal healthcare. The high levels of road accidents, violence and injuries in South Africa, being one of the quadruple burdens of diseases frequently causing hand injuries with resultant devastating economic and functional implications without rehabilitation services, are concerning. The plea is that fo

Balancing Trade-Offs in Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement in Rapid Evaluation: Reflections and Lessons.

BACKGROUND: Patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) is recognised as essential to high-quality health and care research. However, there is limited guidance on how to sustain meaningful involvement in rapid evaluations characterised by compressed timelines and shifting priorities. OBJECTIVE: To reflect on how PPIE developed within the NIHR Rapid Service Evaluation Team (RSET) and to identify practical lessons for navigating tensions between influence, feasibility, and equity in time-pressured contexts. METHODS: This practice-based critical reflection draws on internal documentati

Leveraging Academic-Practice Partnerships at a Safety Net Hospital.

BACKGROUND: In the evolving landscape of health care, the need for highly skilled nursing professionals has never been greater. Central to meeting this demand is the collaboration between academic institutions and health care settings, particularly through faculty practice partnerships. METHOD: An academic-practice partnership in a safety-net hospital partnered with doctorally prepared faculty from a private university and a public community college to create an academic-practice partnership triad. This triad addresses every level of need, including the clinical placements of licensed practic

Public health detailing to increase naloxone access in NYC pharmacies.

BACKGROUND: Drug overdose is a public health crisis in the United States. Opioid overdose deaths are preventable using naloxone, an opioid antagonist that reverses the effect of an opioid and prevents fatal overdose. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate changes in naloxone standing order status, attitudes, and practice behavior after an 8-week public health detailing campaign on increasing naloxone access conducted among pharmacists in independent pharmacies in New York City (NYC). METHODS: Campaign recommendations were to (1) enroll in the NYC pharmacy naloxone standing order program, (

Trichomonas vaginalis infection is uncommon in the British general population: implications for clinical testing and public health screening.

INTRODUCTION: Variable use of new molecular assays, asymptomatic infections and a lack of population data mean that the population burden of Trichomonas vaginalis is uncertain. We investigated the age-specific prevalence of T. vaginalis within the sexually active British general population to inform testing strategies. METHODS: Britain's third National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyle (Natsal-3) is a probability sample survey of 15 162 individuals aged 16-74 years, undertaken during 2010-2012. Urine from 4386 participants aged 16-44 years reporting ≥1 lifetime sexual partner was teste

Awareness and care journey of Glaucoma patients attending three referral hospitals in South-East Nigeria: Implications for public health intervention.

INTRODUCTION: Glaucoma, the primary cause of permanent blindness, occurs frequently, progresses aggressively, and more challenging to treat among Blacks. In South-East Nigeria, Igbos who have ancestral ties to blacks in the Barbados eye study are more likely to have primary open-angle glaucoma and are at risk of blindness. This study aims to evaluate glaucoma patients' awareness, care-seeking pathway and identify policy areas for planning and advocacy. METHOD: This cross-sectional survey was performed at three referral ophthalmology facilities. 303 eligible and consented participants were enr

Factors influencing passive surveillance for T. b. rhodesiense human african trypanosomiasis in Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Sleeping sickness or Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT) is a neglected tropical disease of public health importance across much of Sub-Saharan Africa. In Uganda, chronic T. b. gambiense HAT (gHAT) and acute T. b. rhodesiense HAT (rHAT) occur in two large but discrete geographical foci. Both forms are difficult to diagnose, expensive to treat and ultimately fatal in the absence of treatment. The area affected by zoonotic rHAT has been steadily expanding, placing a high burden on local health systems. HAT is a disease of neglected populations and is notorious for being under-repor

Lessons from the recent rise in use of female sterilization in Malawi.

Although female sterilization is the most widely used modern contraceptive method in the world, most family planning programs in Africa have had difficulty providing it. Malawi, however, despite daunting constraints, has made female sterilization widely and equitably accessible, thereby increasing method choice and helping its citizens better meet their reproductive intentions. Ten percent of currently married Malawian women of reproductive age rely on female sterilization for contraceptive protection, compared with less than 2 percent across Africa, and demand to limit births now exceeds dema

[Knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding glaucoma in the urban and suburban population of Lomé (Togo)].

Priorities for public health preparedness for psychedelics: education, workforce readiness, and strategic information needs in a rapidly changing landscape.

Use of psychedelic substances is increasing across unregulated, state-regulated, research, ceremonial/religious, and medical settings in the United States. Concurrently, a growing body of clinical research signals the potential for therapeutic applications for specific psychedelics in the treatment of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance use disorders, and other health conditions. This evolving landscape presents both promise and complexity. From a public health perspective, a structured public health preparedness approach is needed to prioritize safety, workforce readiness, a

Using Ecological Systems Theory to Enhance Community Health Literacy.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated long-standing disparities that many people in the United States experience due to their race and ethnicity and socioeconomic status. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITY: An outcry from several relevant stakeholders ignited a federal response from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), who, among other entities, decided to address low health literacy (HL) in underserved communities. Evidence suggests that HL impacts under-resourced communities' understanding of health issues and whether

Advocating for cash incentives instead of gift cards in public health research: Dollars over donuts.

Incentives for participation can help enable more equitable public health research practices, particularly when working with people from structurally disadvantaged populations, such as people who use drugs or people experiencing homelessness. Administrative and perceived ethical advantages have solidified gift card incentives in research, even though participants tend to prefer cash incentives for their time, knowledge, and contribution of lived experiences. The use of cash instead of gift cards may merit fresh attention. Drawing from research with marginalized groups, we summarize concerns wi

Examining the strategic utilization of Community-Academic Partnerships as a research engagement method in clinical and public health research within urban settings: a qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Community-Academic Partnerships (CAPs) are a promising method for enhancing research engagement among communities of interest, including key populations in clinical and public health research. Expanding the evidence base on utilizing CAPs in clinical and public health research can strengthen the clinical research enterprise, contributing to optimal recruitment outcomes. This study explored CAPs as a research method to engage both partners and patients who were involved in a clinical trial focused on maternal and child health, public health research.
