Purpose: Explosive performance is increased right after performing loaded resistance exercise, which is known as post-activation performance … post-PLYO. Exercise-induced muscle damage markers (maximal voluntary contraction torque [MVC], and quadriceps muscle soreness) were assessed at baseline, 15 minutes, 24 and 48 hours following PLYO. Results: MVC torque decreased (p < .05) at 15 minutes post-PLYO (-15.1 ± 9.7%) but returned to the baseline at 24 hours post-PLYO. Muscle soreness developed (p < .05) a …

A patient with Whipple's disease aged 34 years is presented. At muscle biopsy, the patient presented with tubular aggregates of the quadriceps muscle. The patient did not exhibit any clinical and electromyographical indications of muscular involvement nor direct or indirect histological indications of muscular infiltration with Whipple's bacillus. The possible etiopathogenetic factors creating these aggregates are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to poor muscle function, cartilage degeneration, and the development of knee osteoarthritis. However, the impact of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] level on quadriceps muscle strength remains inconclusive, largely due to variations in study designs, differences in study populations, and the influence of confounding factors such as co-supplementation with other vitamins. The existing literature presents mixed findings, highlighting the need for a comprehensive evaluation of the available evidence.

OBJECTIVES: Skeletal muscle wasting is a common occurrence in critical illness, often resulting in intensive care unit (ICU)-acquired weakness. This study aims to identify clinical factors associated with muscle decay in mechanically ventilated critically ill children. Utilizing point-of-care ultrasound, a noninvasive and cost-effective tool, we assess muscle decay through ultrasound of the quadriceps femoris.
METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted in a single-center quaternary-care pediatric intensive care unit at a children's hospital. A convenience sample of 103 sedated a

This study aimed to compare the effects of 8 weeks (24 sessions) between flywheel complex training with eccentric overload and traditional complex training of well-trained volleyball players on muscle adaptation, including hypertrophy, strength, and power variables. Fourteen athletes were recruited and randomly divided into the flywheel complex training with an eccentric-overload group (FCTEO, n = 7) and the control group (the traditional complex training group, TCT, n = 7). Participants performed half-squats using a flywheel device or Smith machine and drop jumps, with three sets of eight rep

To describe the possible effects of chronic specific exercise training, the present study compared the anthropometric variables, muscle-tendon unit (MTU) architecture, passive stiffness, and force production capacity between a group of competitive cyclists and runners. Twenty-seven competitive male cyclists (n = 16) and runners (n = 11) participated. B-mode ultrasound evaluation of the vastus lateralis muscle and patellar tendon as well as passive stiffness of the knee extensors MTU were assessed. The athletes then performed a test of knee extensor maximal voluntary isometric contractions. Cyc

Previous research has shown that vibration foam rolling (VFR) on damaged muscle shows greater improvement in muscle soreness and range of motion (ROM) compared with foam rolling (FR) without vibration. However, the effect of frequency in VFR on muscle soreness and loss of function caused by damaged muscles is unknown. The purpose of this study was to compare the acute effects of 90-s low-frequency (LF)- and high-frequency (HF)-VFR intervention on ROM, muscle soreness, muscle strength, and performance of eccentrically damaged muscle. Study participants were sedentary healthy adult volunteers (n

OBJECTIVE: Children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy (hCP) experience a disorganized muscle activation pattern that adversely affect their ability to respond to balance perturbations. This study examined the effect of plyometric exercises on muscle-activation strategies and response-capacity to balance threats in children with hCP.
METHODS: In a pre-, posttest control-group study, 34 children with hCP were allocated randomly to either the control group (n = 17; received a traditional physical rehabilitation program, lasted for 45 minutes/session, twice/week for three successive months) or the p

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is one of the most common injuries of the area surrounding the knee. Muscle strength deficiency is observed following an ACL injury. Determining differences in muscle strength and gait between patients with acute and chronic ACL injury will provide crucial information for assessments and treatment plans.
METHODS: We evaluated 60 patients with ACL rupture. Patients were classified into acute and chronic groups. We compared measurements of anthropometric parameters, muscle strength, gait and functional questionnaire.
FINDINGS: The muscle stre

Using electrogoniometry and electromyography, we measured tibial translation and muscle activation in 12 patients with unilateral anterior cruciate ligament injury and in 12 control subjects. Measurements were made during an active extension exercise with 0-, 4-, and 8-kg weights and during squats on two legs and on one leg where the projection of the center of gravity was placed over, behind, and in front the feet. In the uninjured subjects, tibial translation increased with increasing load except during the squat with the center of gravity behind the feet, which produced the smallest transla

An automated system for exercising the paralyzed quadriceps muscles of spinal cord injured patients using functional neuromuscular stimulation (FNS) has been developed. It induces smooth concentric and eccentric contractions in both limbs to enable bilateral 70 degree knee extensions in an asynchronous pattern. External load resistance is applied at the ankle level to "overload" the muscles and bring about training effects. The system uses adaptive control methods to adjust FNS current output (threshold level and the ramp slope) to the quadriceps muscles to maintain performance as the muscles …

PURPOSE: We prospectively assessed 22 consecutively treated patients to determine the effectiveness and safety of arthroscopically assisted posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) reconstruction by using a quadriceps tendon autograft.
METHODS: Twenty-two patients with isolated PCL injury who underwent PCL reconstruction with a quadriceps tendon autograft were enrolled in the prospective study. The average follow-up period was 66 months (range, 60-76). Follow-up included Lysholm knee scores, Tegner activity scores, International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) score, thigh muscle assessment, and

Stiff knee gait (SKG) is defined as decreased knee flexion during the swing phase. It is one of the most common gait disorders following stroke. Knee extensor spasticity is commonly accepted as the primary cause. Clinical management has focused on the reduction in knee extensor spasticity. Recent advances in understanding of post-stroke hemiplegic gait suggest that SKG can present as mechanical consequences between muscle spasticity, weakness, and their interactions with ground reactions during walking. Various underlying mechanisms are presented through sample cases in this article. They incl

BACKGROUND: The assessment of muscle mass is a key determinant of the diagnosis of sarcopenia. We introduce for the first time an ultrasound imaging method for diagnosing sarcopenia based on changes in muscle geometric proportions.
METHODS: Vastus lateralis muscle fascicle length (Lf) and thickness (Tm) were measured at 35% distal femur length by ultrasonography in a population of 279 individuals classified as moderately active elderly (MAE), sedentary elderly (SE) (n = 109), mobility impaired elderly (MIE) (n = 43), and in adult young controls (YC) (n = 60). The ratio of Lf/Tm was calculated

INTRODUCTION: Haemophilic knee arthropathy leads to a reduction in muscle mass and strength. Blood flow restriction (BFR) involves the application of a compressive cuff that enables strength training with reduced loads.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate safety as the primary outcome and the efficacy (muscle strength and activation, functional capacity and quality of life) as secondary outcomes of a quadriceps strengthening programme using BFR in patients with haemophilia.
METHODS: A randomised clinical trial was conducted with 33 participants assigned to either an experimental group (strength training
