MicroRNAs (miRs) are small RNAs that do not code for proteins, but instead decrease the stability and suppress the translation of target mRNAs by binding with complementary sequences in their 3'-untranslated regions (3'-UTRs). In the present study, it is reported that breast cancer tumor tissue, as well as irradiated MCF7 breast cancer cells, exhibit decreased levels of miR-26b expression compared with normal breast tissue and MCF7 cells without exposure to radiation. Additionally, a luciferase reporter assay was used to demonstrate that miR-26b directly targetsDNA damage-regulated autophagy m

The human sphingomyelin synthase 1 gene (SGMS1) encodes an essential enzyme that is involved in the synthesis of sphingomyelin and diacylglycerol from phosphatidylcholine and ceramide. Among the products of SGMS1, we found new transcripts, circular RNAs (circRNAs), that contain sequences of the gene's 5' untranslated region (5'UTR). Some of them include the gene's coding region and fragments of introns. An analysis of the abundance of circRNAs in human tissues showed that the largest transcripts were predominantly found in different parts of the brain. circRNAs of rat and mouse sphingomyelin s

MicroRNAs (miRs) are small non-coding RNAs that negatively regulate gene expression by binding to the 3` untranslated regions (3`UTR) of their target mRNAs. MiRs were shown to play pivotal roles in tissue development and function and are also involved in the pathogenesis of various diseases including cancer. MicroRNA-206, which belongs to the group of so-called "myomiRs", is one of the most studied miRs thus far. In addition to being involved in skeletal muscle development and pathology, it has also been established that it is involved in the pathogenesis of numerous diseases including heart f

microRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression by targeting the 3'-untranslated region of multiple target genes. Pathogenesis results from defects in several gene sets; therefore, disease progression could be prevented using miRNAs targeting multiple genes. Moreover, recent studies suggest that miRNAs reflect the stage of the specific disease, such as carcinogenesis. Cystic diseases, including polycystic kidney disease, polycystic liver disease, pancreatic cystic disease, and ovarian cystic disease, have common processes of cyst formation in the specific organ. Controlled sex-, stage- and tissue-specific expression of antipathogen effector molecules is important for genetic engineering strategies to control mosquito-borne diseases. Adult female salivary glands are involved in pathogen transmission to human hosts and are target sites for expression of antipathogen effector molecules. The Aedes aegypti 30K a and 30K b genes are expressed exclusively in adult female salivary glands and are transcribed divergently from start sites separated by 263 nucleotides. The intergenic, 5'- and 3'-end untranslated regions of both genes are sufficient to express sim

During investigations into recent population decreases in Pyrenean chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica pyrenaica) 21 animals found dead or dying were necropsied. Immunohistochemistry revealed the presence of a pestivirus in organs from two of the 21 chamois. From one of these animals a pestivirus was isolated from the spleen, skin and serum. The virus had better growth in ovine than in bovine cells and was neutralized most effectively by an anti-border disease virus (BDV) reference antiserum. Using panpestivirus and genotype-specific primers selected from 5'-untranslated region (UTR) of the pestiviru

The subgenomic (SG) mRNA of rubella virus (RUB) contains the structural protein open reading frame (SP-ORF) that is translated to produce the three virion structural proteins: capsid (C) and glycoproteins E2 and E1. RUB expression vectors have been developed that express heterologous genes from the SG RNA, including replicons which replace the SP-ORF with a heterologous gene, and these expression vectors are candidate vaccine vectors. In the related alphaviruses, translational enhancing elements have been identified in both the 5' untranslated region (UTR) of the SG RNA and the N-terminal regi

Liver diseases constitute a major global health burden, contributing substantially to morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although effective therapeutic strategies have been developed for key risk factors, such as hepatitis C infection, therapeutic options for most other liver diseases remain limited. Noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs), which regulate diverse cellular and molecular processes, have emerged as promising therapeutic targets and biomarkers in liver diseases. In this study, we summarize the mechanisms of action and functional roles of ncRNAs, such as long ncRNAs (lncRNAs), circular RNAs (circR

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with significant variability associated with substantial loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. Currently, there are limited opportunities for intervention. There is a lack of reliable biomarkers to identify patients with PD, which poses a challenge for clinicians. In this review, recent advances in PD biomarker research, including genomic, epigenomic, proteomic, and non-coding RNA, will be highlighted, with particular emphasis on integrating omics for precision medicine. In addition, the current understanding

Cell surface glycoRNAs have recently emerged as an unexpected class of RNA-glycan conjugates. Their discovery challenges the long-standing view that RNA is confined to intracellular compartments. These small noncoding RNAs, modified with N- or O-linked glycans and displayed on the outer leaflet of the plasma membrane, create a unique molecular interface recognizable by both glycan-binding and nucleic acid-sensing immune receptors. Recent studies suggest that glycoRNAs engage multiple immune receptor families, including P-selectin, Siglecs, Toll-like receptors (TLRs), and lectins, to influence

Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the causative pathogen of human tuberculosis and a leading cause of death worldwide attributed to a single infectious agent. While small non-coding RNAs (sRNAs) have emerged as key regulators of bacterial pathogenicity, their specific roles and mechanisms in M. tuberculosis remain poorly understood. Here, we employed label-free quantitative proteomics, parallel reaction monitoring, and sRNA-seq analyses to identify proteomic differences between the virulent H37Rv and attenuated H37Ra strains. Bioinformatic analysis revealed significant enrichment of differentially

Preeclampsia (PE) is a complex multisystem disorder that affects 2-8% of pregnancies worldwide and poses substantial risks to maternal and fetal health. Current diagnostic approaches rely largely on clinical signs and angiogenic biomarkers, and available treatments remain primarily supportive; they do not directly reverse the placental or systemic mechanisms that drive the disease. Extracellular vesicles (EVs), including small EVs often termed exosomes, carry non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) that may contribute to placental-maternal communication in both normal and pathological pregnancy. In PE, alter

Ferroptosis is a non-apoptotic form of cell death characterized by intracellular iron accumulation and the subsequent elevation of cytotoxic lipid peroxides. Various cellular metabolic pathways intricately regulate this process, including redox homeostasis, iron metabolism, lipid metabolism, and other signaling cascades. Increasing evidence substantiates the critical role of ferroptosis in tumorigenesis and cancer therapy. However, our current understanding of numerous mechanisms underlying tumor ferroptosis remains limited. Noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) provide a new perspective. Several ncRNAs, pa

Sertoli cells, as somatic cells within the seminiferous tubules of the testis, create a specific environment ensuring the smooth progression of spermatogenesis. Transfer RNA (tRNA)-derived small RNAs (tsRNAs) are present in various cell types and able to regulate RNA stability, translation, stress response and cell proliferation. However, the roles of specific tsRNAs in Sertoli cells remain to be elucidated. In this study, by using pigs as a research model, we explored the expression characteristics and functions of tsRNAs in porcine Sertoli cells. Analysis indicated that tsRNAs in Sertoli cel

Polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) are omnipresent in the air and can be inhaled by humans. However, their long-term adverse implications and toxicological mechanisms for human respiratory health are unclear. Therefore, this study aims to provide new insights into the pulmonary toxicity of PS-NPs using mice and organoid models. After subacute and subchronic inhalation of PS-NPs, mice showed pronounced lung injury characterized by respiratory rate changes, altered hematology, and histological evidence of tissue damage and oxidative stress. Similarly, repeated PS-NPs exposure also restricted orga

Mycobacterium abscessus causes severe disease in patients with cystic fibrosis. Little is known in M. abscessus about the roles of small regulatory RNAs (sRNA) in gene regulation. We show that the sRNA B11 controls gene expression and virulence-associated phenotypes in this pathogen. B11 deletion from the smooth strain ATCC_19977 produced a rough strain, increased pro-inflammatory signaling and virulence in multiple infection models, and increased resistance to antibiotics. Examination of clinical isolate cohorts identified isolates with B11 mutations or reduced expression. We used RNAseq and

Neurodegenerative diseases are one of the greatest medical burdens of the modern age, being mostly incurable and with limited prognostic and diagnostic tools. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal, progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by the loss of motoneurons, with a complex etiology, combining genetic, epigenetic, and environmental causes. The neuroprotective therapeutic approaches are very limited, while the diagnostics rely on clinical examination and the exclusion of other diseases. The recent advancement in the discovery of molecular pathways and gene mutations i

Cancer stemness, mainly consisting of chemo-resistance, radio-resistance, tumorigenesis, metastasis, tumor self-renewal, cancer metabolism reprogramming, and tumor immuno-microenvironment remodeling, play crucial roles in the cancer progression process and has become the hotspot of cancer research field in recent years. Nowadays, the exact molecular mechanisms of cancer stemness have not been fully understood. Extensive studies have recently implicated that non-coding RNA (ncRNA) plays vital roles in modulating cancer stemness. Notably, N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification is of crucial impor

Proper functioning of the human placenta is critical for maternal and fetal health. While microRNAs (miRNAs) are known to impact placental gene expression, the effects of other small non-coding RNAs (sncRNAs) on the placental transcriptome are not well-established, and are emerging topics in the study of environmental influence on fetal development and reproductive health. Here, we assembled a cohort of 30 placental chorionic villi samples of varying gestational ages (M ± SD = 23.7 ± 11.3 weeks) to delineate the human placental sncRNA transcriptome through small RNA sequence analysis. We obser

Celiac Disease (CeD) is an immune-mediated complex disease that is triggered by the ingestion of gluten and develops in genetically susceptible individuals. It has been known for a long time that the Human Leucocyte Antigen (HLA) molecules DQ2 and DQ8 are necessary, although not sufficient, for the disease development, and therefore other susceptibility genes and (epi)genetic events must participate in CeD pathogenesis. The advances in Genomics during the last 15 years have made CeD one of the immune-related disorders with the best-characterized genetic component. In the present work, we will
