Slow-wave sleep in the TPJ is linked to individual differences in implicit bias.

Implicit biases can profoundly impact social interactions and decision-making processes. Here, we investigate whether the heterogeneity of implicit racial bias can be explained by interindividual differences in the intracortical distribution of slow-wave activity (SWA), a marker of sleep depth. Using high-density EEG, we recorded sleep data from 52 healthy adults (27 females) during a typical night's sleep in their homes. Implicit racial bias was measured using the race Implicit Association Test (IAT). Whole-brain corrected source localization analysis identified a significant association betw

Addressing the Stigma of Mental Illness in Black Families and Communities in Ontario, Canada: Protocol for a Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Racism and discrimination are among the factors perpetuating the persistent disparities within the Canadian health sector and related social and community services. Addressing issues of racism in Canada is crucial to reducing the mounting mental health disparities that subsequently impact the psychological well-being of diverse groups of people, particularly racialized and Black individuals. While some research has been conducted on mental illness-related stigma, very few peer-reviewed studies have attempted antistigma interventions to address mental health disparities in Black fam…

Examining measures of schizotypy for gender and racial bias using item response theory and differential item functioning.

Schizotypy involves schizophrenia-like traits and symptoms, with the Wisconsin Schizotypy Scales (WSS) being frequently used in previous research. There is some evidence that schizophrenia-spectrum symptom levels, including when using the WSS, might vary both by gender and by race and ethnicity. However, previous research has rarely examined to what extent the WSS show gender and racial bias. Further, this has not been previously examined for the Cognitive Slippage Scale, a measure of disorganized schizotypy. In this study, we examined biases for a subset of items from the WSS in a large sampl

Assessing racial bias in healthcare predictive models: Practical lessons from an empirical evaluation of 30-day hospital readmission models.

OBJECTIVE: Despite increased availability of methodologies to identify algorithmic bias, the operationalization of bias evaluation for healthcare predictive models is still limited. Therefore, this study proposes a process for bias evaluation through an empirical assessment of common hospital readmission models. The process includes selecting bias measures, interpretation, determining disparity impact and potential mitigations. METHODS: This retrospective analysis evaluated racial bias of four common models predicting 30-day unplanned readmission (i.e., LACE Index, HOSPITAL Score, and the CMS

Association of Racial Discrimination With Adiposity in Children and Adolescents.

IMPORTANCE: Childhood obesity is a major public health issue and is disproportionately prevalent among children from minority racial and ethnic groups. Personally mediated racism (commonly referred to as racial discrimination) is a known stressor that has been linked to higher body mass index (BMI; calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared) in adults, but little is known about the association of racial discrimination and childhood and adolescent adiposity. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prospective association between self-reported experiences of racial discrimination an…

Contributions of African-centered (Africentric) psychology: A call for inclusion in APA-accredited graduate psychology program curriculum.

Over the past few years, there has been increased visibility of, and attention paid to, enduring issues such as racial discrimination toward Black Americans. Black psychologists have been called upon to explain various race-related mental health issues to the public, as well as their colleagues and students. Discussions about how to heal from persistent, intergenerational, oppressive attacks on the African psyche are important, but the theories and treatments in which most practitioners are trained and considered "best practices" are Eurocentric in nature. African-centered (or Africentric) psy

Pathways From HIV-Related Stigma, Racial Discrimination, and Gender Discrimination to HIV Treatment Outcomes Among Women Living With HIV in Canada: Longitudinal Cohort Findings.

BACKGROUND: HIV-related stigma, gender discrimination, and racial discrimination harm mental health and hamper HIV treatment access for women living with HIV. Maladaptive coping strategies, such as substance use, can further worsen HIV treatment outcomes, whereas resilience can improve HIV outcomes. We examined resilience and depression as mediators of the relationship between multiple stigmas and HIV treatment outcomes among women living with HIV. SETTING: Ontario, British Columbia, and Quebec, Canada. METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal study with 3 waves at 18-month intervals. We used st

COVID-19 Related Racial Discrimination in Small Asian Communities: A Cross Sectional Study.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, there has been a surge of discrimination against Asians across the globe. However, there is a knowledge gap of COVID-19 related racial discrimination against Asians in smaller Asian populations. A total of 221 adults living in Florida completed an online survey between June-July 2020. Adjusted logistic regression assessed associations between sociodemographic factors and experienced discrimination, hypervigilance of safety, nervousness in public, and anticipated discrimination. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS. Asian respondents were more likely th

Racial/ethnic discrimination as race-based trauma and suicide-related risk in racial/ethnic minority young adults: The explanatory roles of stress sensitivity and dissociation.

Objective: Drawing on race-based trauma models, the present study examined common reactions to trauma exposure (i.e., stress sensitivity, dissociative symptoms, depressive symptoms), as potential explanatory factors in the relation between racial/ethnic discrimination and suicide-related risk among racial and ethnic minority young adults. Method: A group of racial and ethnic minority (N = 747; 61% women; 63% U.S.-born; 34% Asian American) young adults, ages 18-29 (M = 19.84; SD = 2.22), completed a battery of self-report measures online. Accounting for demographics and other trauma exposures,

Impaired vasodilation in pregnant African Americans: Preliminary evidence of potential antecedents and consequences.

Significant health disparities exist between African Americans (AA) and European Americans (EA) in hypertension and hypertension-related disorders. Evidence suggests that this is due to impaired vasodilation in AAs. Pregnancy is a potent systemic vasodilatory state. However, differences in vasodilation between AAs and EAs have not been investigated in pregnancy. We sought to examine the effects of pregnancy on vasodilation in AA and EA women and how this might be related to discrimination and low birth weight in their offspring. Hemodynamics [blood pressure (MAP), cardiac output (CO), total pe

Within-person associations between racial microaggressions and sleep among African American and Latinx young adults.

Emerging work suggests that experiences of racial discrimination may impact overall sleep health; however, there is limited work on the link between racial microaggressions and sleep. Using weekly diary data, the current study examined young adults' weekly reports of racial microaggressions across 4 weeks, and their relation to weekly reports of sleep-onset latency, reduced total sleep time and poorer sleep quality. This design allowed us to examine how within-person fluctuations in racial microaggressions corresponded with young adults' sleep. Data were collected among 140 African American (6

The Myth of Innate Racial Differences Between White and Black People's Bodies: Lessons From the 1793 Yellow Fever Epidemic in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

In this commentary, I take up the question of why beliefs in fundamental, innate racial differences between Black and White people's bodies persist in medical discourse, despite evidence to the contrary.I locate the origin of some of these beliefs in the infamous yellow fever epidemic that struck Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1793. During that early public health crisis, White physicians and lay people erroneously thought that Black people were immune to yellow fever because of their race. I then highlight the efforts of Philadelphia's Black leaders during the epidemic-namely Absalom Jones an

Political ideology and American intergroup discrimination: A patriotism perspective.

In this research we demonstrate the powerful role of ingroup favoritism, rather than hostility, in American intergroup biases. Specifically, we take a novel perspective to understanding the relationship between political ideology and discrimination against ethnic-minority Americans by focusing on the role of patriotism. Across three studies, we show that political ideology is a strong predictor of resource allocation biases, and this effect is mediated by American patriotism and not by prejudice or nationalism. Conservatives report greater levels of patriotism than liberals, and patriotism is

Discrimination and Vaping Among Black and Hispanic Young Adults: Depression as Mechanisms of Influence and the Moderating Role of Family-Like Support.

BACKGROUND: Discrimination is a salient psychosocial stressor linked to both mental health challenges and substance use among racially minoritized populations. However, few studies have examined how perceived discrimination contributes to vaping device use and whether depressive symptoms and familial-like support shape this relationship. The present study tested a moderated mediation model in which depressive symptoms mediate the relationship between perceived discrimination and vaping behaviors, and familial-like support buffers both the direct and indirect pathways. METHODS: Data were drawn

Dementia Diagnosis in Postapartheid South Africa: Providers' Perspectives in Ethnographic Context.

This article situates perspectives of South African social service and health care providers on older adults who live with dementia and Alzheimer's disease in ethnographic context. A review of findings from multi-year field research on long-term care and service provision for older adults in peri-urban Mpumalanga shows: racial disparities in accessing formal dementia diagnoses; aggression, forgetfulness, and wandering as the most reported symptoms of presumed dementia; and provider-reported ethno-racial differences in families' diagnostic- and care-seeking practices. Findings corroborate evalu
