Assessment of dosimetric approaches in evaluating radiation exposure for interventional cardiologists in Sri Lanka.

Interventional cardiologists face significant radiation exposure during interventional cardiology procedures. Therefore, this study focuses on assessing radiation exposure among interventional cardiologists during their procedures. Specifically, it aims to determine the effectiveness of both single and double dosimeter methods in estimating annual occupational radiation doses. This research holds pioneering significance as it represents the very first study undertaken in Sri Lanka. Thirteen interventional cardiologists performed 486 interventional cardiology procedures over three months in thr…

Protective Effects of Taurine on the Radiation Exposure Induced Cellular Damages in the Mouse Intestine.

There has been a growing interest in radiation effects as a result of the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident in 2011. Exposure to ionizing radiation causes oxidizing events to different organs such as the bone marrow, intestine, and kidney, which can result in radiation-induced injuries. Taurine (2-aminoethanesulfonic acid) is a sulfur-containing amino acid possessing several important physiological functions, including membrane stabilization, anti-oxidative activity, anti-inflammatory effects and modulation of intracellular calcium levels. Taurine appears to be an attractive candidate for

A Holistic Approach to Assessment of Population Exposure to Radiation: Challenges and Initiatives of a Regulatory Authority.

A regulatory authority for radiation safety should continuously evaluate and improve the national safety framework, in line with current requirements and standards. In this context, the Greek Atomic Energy Commission initiated a series of concerted actions. The radiation dose to the population due to public and medical exposures was assessed. The assessment of dose due to public exposure was based on measurements of radon concentrations in dwellings, radionuclide concentrations in environmental samples, and air dose rates; the assessment of dose due to medical exposure was based on dose measur

Prospective study of ultraviolet radiation exposure and risk of breast cancer in the United States.

Although there are few environmental risk factors for breast cancer, some epidemiologic studies found that exposure to solar UV radiation (UVR) may lower risk. Prior epidemiologic studies are limited by narrow ambient UVR ranges and lack lifetime exposure assessment. To address these issues, we studied a cohort with residences representing a wide range of ambient UVR. Using the nationwide U.S. Radiologic Technologists study (USRT), we examined the association between breast cancer risk and UVR based on ambient UVR, time outdoors, a combined variable of ambient UVR and time outdoors (combined U
