I previously reported a new reduction and fixation technique for extra-articular distal radius fracture associated with osteoporosis. I developed the technique and applied it to intra-articular fracturea. I present here the technique and verify its reliability, comparing the functional results of intra-articular fracture cases to those of extra-articular cases.

The technique of radio-radial monobloc-fixation with the small AO external fixator device has been applied to 17 consecutive Colles' fractures. The fracture types were mainly A3 and C2, according to the AO classification. We found this technique to be easy and quick in application and stable in fixation. The Ilizarov device was used for extrafocal osteosynthesis in complex fractures of the distal end of radius. With the aid of the device the bone fragments can be joined and kept in a correct position till a callus is formed. The mean time of fixation in the apparatus is equal to 21 days. In 114 patients 117 operations were performed. Good remote results were obtained in 73 of 99 patients (73,7%), satisfactory results in 25 (25,3%).
